Unexpectedly long time from boot to log in screen

Hello,

I am currently having issues with my pc boot up time. It takes 3-4 minutes for my pc to get from the HP logo boot screen to the log in screen. This has ocurred in the past 4-5 days because before it took nearly 5 sec to go to the log in screen after i pressed the power button without even displaying the HP logo boot screen.

My pc runs on windows 8.1 / 16 GB of Ram / Intel i7 4700 MQ / 1 TB HDD / Nvidia GeForce GT 740M  The operating system is up to date, i have Bitdefender Antivirus, Malwarebytes, i use CCleaner, HDD is fragmented weekly, i have disabled most of start up programs. I am using a microsoft account, not a local one. I tried CleanBoot but the timing was the same.

Any ideas please ?

Thank you :)

Yes.

I also used the System File Checker. Here's the log file : http://1drv.ms/1LzPfea . It's named CBS.log

In order to diagnose your problem we need to run Windows performance toolkit the instructions for which can be found in this wiki
If you have any questions feel free to ask

Please run the trace when you are experiencing the problem

Since you problem appears to be on boot plase use the boot configuration in WPR

*

If you did not run DISM when you ran SFC you should.  Instruction in the below wiki

Please run a system file check (SFC) & DISM if you are on win 8 or higher
All instructions are in our Wiki article below...

Hi

I don't have a backup of my data (300GB+) in order to safely perform the DISM.

I used the SDK from here : https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/desktop/bg162891

and used this command : xbootmgr -trace boot -traceFlags BASE+CSWITCH+DRIVERS+POWER -resultPath C:\TEMP

Do you need the file ?

Madris

We do need the trace.  You can upload it to one drive or any file sharing service.  Generally speaking Windows performance recorder has replaced Xperf for this kink of thing as it is easier to use and has a gui

Hello,

I performed the trace once but in the end it said that it had dropped some events and suggested to run it again. The first trace took like one hour. I am running it again now. Should i interrupt it after 60 sec or let it finish itself since it has 3 iterations ?

I would also like to inform you that Windows Update turns off itself even when i turn it back on. It goes on like this forever

I ran the trace again and let it finish itself and there still was a message saying that the trace dropped some events.

If the 60 sec trace dropped events then you either have a memory issue or an HD issue.  In either case run it for 60 seconds, compress it, upload it, give us a link to it....

Hi,

sorry it took me some time to figure out that i had selected a boot scenario and not a general one so the thing about trace dropped events happened when the boot scenario was selected.Actually from time to time i hear weak noises coming fom my HDD that sound like scratching noises.

Anyway,i performed the right trace. Here's the link to my Public Onedrive : http://1drv.ms/1LzRb5U

Thanks

That does not appear to be a startup trace.  Did you use the boot configuration>  Did it reboot 2-3 times?  The current trace is only 62 seconds long and if your computer is taking a long time from boot to log on screen it does not appear to be.  The largest resource drains are Metro Skype and Chrome.  Both being around 10%

Hello ZigZag,

The link that i provided earlier was from a general trace.

The boot trace that i did won't let me stop it after 60 sec. It needs to finish the whole process ( rebooting 2-3 times etc) so i let it finish, compressed the file and uploaded on my Public OneDrive. Here's the link: http://1drv.ms/1JUGpcb
It's called WPR Files.7z

Thank you for your previous analysis :)

HUGE files.  I can only do one  because I only have 8 gigs of ram.

I wonder what is going on in the first 2 minutes as nothing is happening (see snip) and that makes me think HD issue.  How big is the page file?

In the first one it is fairly obvious what is going on.  MBAM is running a scan on boot and it ties up the CPU & scan and ties up the HD making it just that much longer to get to the desktop.  Your time is excessively long.  I would remove malwarebytes and go to the maker of the HD>download and run their HD checking utility to find out if you are having an issue with the HD

May 26th, 2015 11:28pm

Hi ZigZag,

The pagefile is about 2.37 GB and hiberfil.sys is 12.7GB . seems like way too much, right ?

The manufacturer of my HD is Toshiba but i can't find a Toshiba Diagnostic Tool.

Any ideas ?

As for the boot, yes it takes a huge amount of time, the boot screen with the logo takes about 1-2 minutes, than there is a black screen for 2 minutes and than comes the logon screen.

What can you suggest?

Many thanks for your help :)

I just wanted to make sure you had a page file, its size is really not that important

Toshiba probably does not make the HD.  You can use a tool like aida64, or speccy, to find out who does.  Is the HD an SSD?

Did you remove MBAM?

Has it always taken this long?

Do you have fastboot enabled?

May 27th, 2015 9:00am

Hi

It's a HDD. I got two reports from aida64 : http://1drv.ms/1QagnRM

I removed MBAM and it shortened the time, but it still takes too long. Fastboot is enabled. It has never taken this long before, even when i had MBAM installed for a month. It's just this week that this has been happening.

What should i do ?

Thanks for the bump

When you ran SFC did it find errors it could not fix?  If so did you run DISM?

Please run a system file check (SFC) & DISM (if necessary) if you are on win 8 or higher

Hello,

1) I ran the SFC and it found errors it could not fix

2) I ran DISM and it corrected the errors successfully

3) I ran SFC again and everything was fine, no errors

Still the timing has not improved.

I noticed that booting the pc after shutting it down is way more quicker than restarting.

It takes 5 minutes to go to desktop with a restart.

It takes 2 min to go to desktop after shutting down.

What do you suggest ?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I also noticed that windows prompts me to turn on automatic updates several times despite the fact that i have turned it on and to automatically download & install updates. I turn it on as the notification says and some seconds later it still tells me to turn it on. This goes on repeatedly 2-3 times a week.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I also notice that every time i am decompressing/compressing a file or when i install smth that takes a long time, my cursor freezes for 30 sec and than it turns to normal and than it freezes again every 2-3 minutes.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I also notice that the touchpad settings (edge swipe, inverted vertical scroll, three finger swipe )  disables for some time when i start up the pc, or when i compress/decompress a file or when i install smth.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I know these are a lot of problems but hopefully i am counting on you to help me out since by myself i haven't succeeded in resolving them. ( reinstalling drivers software/ disabling & enabling drivers )

I am very grateful for your help and assistance.

Happy to help but running out of ideas.  May be time to do a system refresh

Since you mention that it is quicker from a cold boot than restart it may be taking too long to shut down.

noticed that booting the pc after shutting it down is way more quicker than restarting.

It takes 5 minutes to go to desktop with a restart.

It takes 2 min to go to desktop after shutting down.

There is obviously something wrong in the system and if SFC/DISM are clear it may well be hardware.

my cursor freezes for 30 sec and than it turns to normal and than it freezes again every 2-3 minutes.

Also a hardware indication

I also notice that the touchpad settings (edge swipe, inverted vertical scroll, three finger swipe )  disables for some time when i start up the pc, or when i compress/decompress a file or when i install smth.

I'll probably go for a system refresh. I created a custom refresh image with this command line :
recimg /createimage C:\CustomRefreshImages\Image1

Would you please provide me with your guide for performing a refresh using a custom image file ? Do i also need the windows 8 installation cd/dvd ? Because my pc came with windows 8 preinstalled so no cd/dvd for me . Also no cd drive.

Many thanks
