Unable to update: could not create patch file
We have an early version of QuickBooks (6.0) which installs from the CD on our Windows 7 Pro 32 bit platform. The trouble is when we try to update this program. More specifically, we have the set of update files on disk and place them in the appropriate /Program Files/Intuit and /Windows directories. When exiting from the original (not updated) version of QuickBooks, we get the expected message advising that there are updates download, "do you want to update now?" Up until this point, all is normal. When we click on the "Yes" button, the following message appears: "Unable to update: could not create patch file". Incidentally, we have logged in as the true Administrator and still get this message. Ideas?

According to the information on the Quickbooks website the problem may be with your version of Quickbooks and is not supported on Windows 7. In all likelyhood your problem is caused by the incompatibility of Quickbooks itself. Highly recommend you contact quickbooks Tech support about your problem. Quickbooks is not a Microsoft product and nay incompatibilites will have to be addressed by Quickbooks.

It appears that Microsoft's position is that all users of Windows 7 should update all existing software to be compatible with Windows 7. At present this isn't practical. We have now purchased two machines, a Windows 7 Pro 64 bit (and eventually installed Virtual PC and XP Pro which DID allow us to use QuickBooks) and, now, a second machine, a Windows 7 32 bit. Our purpose in acquiring these two machines was to establish that we could, in fact, adopt the new Windows 7 platform WITHOUT, also, having to completely revamp our myriad of legacy programs. The Virtual PC/XP Pro option worked, but was too quirky to be realistically usable by any but the most tolerate and astute computer guru types. We had hoped that returning to a 32 bit format might solve the problem. In any event, we were seeking the insight and help of those with more Windows experience to offer their suggestions on possible 'fixes', work-arounds. Telling us to buy new software was not our objective.

Based on personal experience, you will more likely find solutions, fixes, or work arounds in a support forum at Quickbooks than you will in a Microsoft forum. Granted Microsoft publishes Windows 7, but Microsoft doesn't specialize in fixes for third party software. At a Quickbooks forum you will encounter a higher concentration of people in like situations and dramatically increase the probability of someone finding a solution.
