Unable to share on home network
I'm trying to set up my home network so I can swap files from PC to PC especially for making back ups of picture, music, and other important files. Uner XP this was very easy. However, I'm stuck with Vista and this has been a very frustrating experience. I usually find most programs to be very intuitive. With XP there was a learning curve, but with Vista I'm completely stumped. So far, I've set all my sharing up in the Network Center and turned off the password protection. I'm behind a DSL modem, a Vonage router, and a wireless/wired router. So I have 3 firewalls between me and the outside world. I'm not concerned about someone breaking in. I've set permissions for everyone for complete access. I've changed the log in names on both PC's to Admin with no password. I keep my files in folders on the C drive so I've set the c drive on both PC's to shared. I still keep getting the dreaded "Error code: 0x80070005 Access is denied.' I've read the help files and nothing is working. I've restarted both PC's several times. Why does this have to be such a pain in the a$$? If the games I enjoy playing were writen for Linux or the Apple OS I'd seriously consider switching. Some advise to Microsoft senior leadership, if you are going to charge people hundreds of dollars for a product MAKE SURE SOMEONE BESIDES COMPUTER GEEKS CAN ACTUALLY USE IT! You may have a strangle hold on the OS market currently, but this will not always be true and people have a long memory when it comes to bad experiences. Just look at American automobile manufacturers. They created an adversarial relationship with their customers through their dealerships. Then they earned a repuatation for slipshod quality. They still haven't recovered from these mistakes in spite of multimillion dollar advertising campeigns. <<<<<folds up soapbox>>>>>

Hello Robmoo, In Windows Vista, it is a little moreharder to do whensharing the root of the drive since it is considered insecure than sharing specific folders. The UI only allows this through the advanced sharing option. The way file sharing works is that two permission sets are used in order to access the share. You have share permissions and then folder permissions. To share the root of the drive, follow these steps: Right-click the drive, then click Share. In the drive properties dialog box, click Advanced Sharing. If you are prompted for an administrator password then type the password or confirmation. In the Advanced sharing dialog, click Share this folder checkbox, typethe share name, then click Ok. Then you need to configure folder security. You can view or set folder permissions by right-clicking the drive, then clicking the Security tab. -- Eric Cross Microsoft MVP (Windows Desktop Experience) http://mvp.support.microsoft.com
