Unable to share folders and files
I am running Vista Home Premium sp2 on a Dell XPS 430 64 bit machine. I am having two problems that think are related. First, I noticed that I can’t set files or folders to share. When I try, I get an error, “An error occurred while trying to share XXXXXX . There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper”, XXXX being the name of whatever I’m trying to share After some poking around, I noticed that in the network properties, File Sharing, Printer Sharing, and Network discovery were off. When I tried to start them, I got an error “The Specified service does not exist as an installed service”. But when I look at the network properties for my connection, it is showing File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft networks as being installed and checked. Both the Server and Workstation services are running. I have searched on Microsoft and a few other sites, but haven’t been able to find anything relevant. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Maybe you could try to reinstall that File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft networks item, see whether it helps. dawooddoe Home Network & Wireless Network Help

Thanks, but I already tried that. It seems that all of the hits I've read having to do with the endpoints involved conneciting to servers, mostly older ones like Server 2003 or server 2000. I haven't seen anything connecting tis error with trying to set a folder to share. I am running Zonealarm as a firewall, but I've tried the do the share bit with Zonealarm shut down and get the same result. John. M. Cheek

Hi, Please perform a Clean Boot to narrow down the problem. 1. Click Start, and click Run msconfig. The System Configuration Utility appears. 2. In the General tab, click Selective Startup. 3. Uncheck the processing options that are listed below Selective Startup except "Load System Services." 4. Click Apply, and then click Close. 5. Restart the computer and test if the issue persists. If the issue persists, please use the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) to determine which file is causing the issue, and then replace the file. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow. 2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER: sfc /scannow The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions. Refer the following link for more information: How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833 Regards, Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Hi, As the checker found the corrupt system file, did it fix it? If not, I suggest reinstall SP2 to check if the corrupted file can be replaced. If the issue persists, In-place upgrade is suggested. Note: After performing In-Place Upgrade, your personal data and installed programs usually will not be removed but we may need to run Windows Update to install all the available updates for your system to update these system files to the current version. This troubleshooting process is time consuming. Your patience is highly appreciated. As to the steps of In-Place Upgrade, I still would like to explain that it will reinstall all system files with this method. You may need to reinstall some applications to upgrade some files to a higher version, because they may be replaced during the installation of Windows. It will take about two hours to repair. Your personal files and settings will be kept as they were after the installation. However, it is always recommended to backup the important information and files to other partitions or other disks before doing it. If you would like to perform the In-place Upgrade, let’s refer to the following steps. 1. Start the computer by using the current Operating System. 2. Insert the Windows Vista DVD in the computer's DVD drive. 3. Use one of the following procedures, as appropriate: If Windows automatically detects the DVD, the Install now screen appears. Click Install now. If Windows does not automatically detect the DVD, follow these steps: a. Click Start, type Drive:\setup.exe, and then click OK. Note Drive is the drive letter of the computer's DVD drive. b. Click Install now. 4. When you reach the "Which type of installation do you want?" screen, click Upgrade to upgrade the current operating system to Windows Vista. Regards,Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. I never did find out what was going on with file sharing, but I recently upgraded to Windows 7 and now file sharing is working fine.John. M. Cheek

I'm now having these problems where I can't share my drives, I can't turn on network discovery. I've rebooted with minimal drivers/programs via the msconfig. I've run the sfc /scannow and it says there are no deviations in the windows software. I'm going to attempt to reinstall service pack 1 on windows 7 64 bit and hope that that works. I have already tried to do the "Inplace upgrade" but, it failed because the operating system installed is newer than the one I'm attempting to install. If service pack 1 don't work...I'm thinking that a clean install is all that will fix this and that would truly... bite the big one. I like my system the way it is other than I can't share because of a defective rpc database. There needs to be an application that can repair this. Edit: Ok - So, just like the upgrade, I can't re-install the service pack because it was already installed. I'm stumped. Please help asap. Thanks. Edit 2: I've tried many things...looked on the web all over the place...I've had enough. I'm just going to do a fresh install because of one piece of crap database that gets corrupted at the core of windows. And there is no fix anywhere. This is almost enough to drive a person to linux or mac. I'm telling ya...this really bites the big one.
