Unable to rename folders
Had a smooth installation and everything seems pretty good but I just can't rename any folders in any location. Doesn't work with new or existing folders. Any ideas?

You would need to supply some more information, including whether or not you logged in as an Administrator, how you responded to the UAC prompt if it appeared, the folder you are trying to rename, and, the exact error message you received.

Thanks for the response Byron. I'm logged in as an administrator. This happens all the time in any folder. No UAC prompt appears and no error message is given. It happens with a newly created folder with the default name of "New Folder" or with an existing folder I want to rename. I right click on the folder and choose rename and then type in the new name which does appear. Then when I hit enter the name reverts back to "New Folder" or whatever it was previously called. If I click on the name twice and then rename I get the same result. This is in explorer but also happens in other file management programs I have tried to get round it. Curiously it does not happen at the command prompt. I can successfully use the rename command.

Some additional info.... I have found a thread in microsoft.public.windows.vista.file_management called "Folder creation and renaming" where there are others with the same problem.

After discovering there were many other beta testers in microsoft.public.windows.vista.file_management with the same problem I read their reports there. Each of those that had solved the problem had made new installations and, as far as I could tell, they were all clean installations. My installation was an upgrade from XP and so I did a new clean installation and the problem is no longer there. This poses the question for those investigating that it might be worth establishing if the problem only happens with an upgrade installation.

Judging from your analysis, it appears to be a bug. Please go ahead and file one directly with the MS Windows Vista development team. This post may be helpful -> http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=464740&SiteID=17 Please let us know if this helps. Thanks!

I am experiencing the same problem - only I'm using Media Center and it only occurs only under certain names that I use... and specifically I'm trying to make a folder title PRN so I can enable printing in a program I'm using and I can't because of this bug or whatever is keeping this from happening. (It reverts in ANY directory, I cant even created this folder with cmd prompt)
September 1st, 2006 11:44am

Actually, this behavior isn't just Vista. The same thing happens with Windows XP, Windows Server 2003. I encountered this Saturday on my servers and searched MS this morning to see if there was any information about it and found this thread. You can't create a folder with that name even using MKDIR in a Command Prompt window. I'm thinking the operating systems consider it a reserved word.

I recommend you not to disable UAC, it's the major tool to control file access. Good luck

I did have that problem onThat Build when i added some 3rd party software. If you can get access to the released version and do a complete clean rebuild that i beleve willget rid of the problem. I have see some 3rd party utilities look like thy have install properly but do some wierd to the file/folder system

Now the only thing we need is to find what 3rd party utilities made this mess...
December 9th, 2006 2:51pm

I am also having this issue and I'm not sure it has to do with 3rd party applications. If I do a clean install of Windows Vista Business Edition RTM (right from the CD) the problem doesn't happen. If I take that same install, sysprep it, capture it with ImageX then deploy to another workstation the problem starts happening. The original machine seems to work fine even after the sysprep but any clones seem to have the issue.

I'm having the same problem with Vista RTM, I can create a new folder on a network share, but when I try to rename it it brings up an error message that the root folder (folder above the one I'm creating) does not exist. Does anyone have a fix for this yet?
January 2nd, 2007 12:01pm

It doesn't seem to be limited to renaming folders either. If you try and create a file on a network share (or even mapped drive) the same problem occurs. If you save the file locally then move it overafter it seems to work fine.

I have been working withFile shares and have not had the issues with over 20 different customers. Let get some info what server os and version what version of Vista, Upgrade, or fresh build What Kind of user are you (admin or standard) What are the File share premission can move a file viacommand promptfrom Vista computer what app is creating files This will help id the problem and hopefully the solution
January 5th, 2007 1:35am

Thanks for the response, the information is as follows: Server O/S is Windows 2003 /w SP1 The Desktop is running Vista Business Edition and it is on a Domain with a domain controller also running Windows 2003 SP1. It is a fresh install of the operating system. The copy of ImageX I am using is the x86 version from the WAIK RTM. I am using an administrator account but UAC is turned on. The file permissions on the share are fine because I can perform the same operation using the same domain account on the original workstation. The problem only occurs on machines I clone from it. I've tried creating files using many different apps -- I can confirm that Notepad and any of the Office 2007 products have the same issue. The md operation in the command prompt works fine, but if I try and rename the folder I just created it generates the error. This is a summary of the process I am following: Install Vista Business Edition from the DVD Run sysprep c:\windows\system32\sysprep\sysprep.exe /generalize /oobe Restart the computer and boot up with a Windows PE2 CD. Map a network folder and capture the image using imageX. The syntax is as follows: imagex.exe /capture c: TestImage.wim "Vista test image" The wimscript.ini I am using is as follows: [ExclusionList] ntfs.log hiberfil.sys pagefile.sys "System Volume Information" RECYCLER Windows\CSC *.mof [CompressionExclusionList] *.mp3 *.zip *.cab \Windows\inf\*.pnf Once the capture is complete I boot up another workstation with the PE2 CD. I then use diskpart to format the drive then apply the image with this command: imagex.exe /apply Testimage.wim 1 c: After its complete I go through the mini setup, add the PC to the domain and I end up with the error when renaming/creating folders in \\server\share: "Folder \\server\share does not exist. Would you like to create it?" It doesn't matter if I hit yes or no, the error comes up again.

In my case I needed to (temporarily) turn off my Avast! Virus scan and I could rename and move folders again. Funny enough - after activating Avast again the problem still was gone. So check your virus scanner and turn it off for a moment - hope that helps :-)
January 5th, 2007 5:54pm

I think we figured it out. I was running ImageX.exe from a network share instead of from the PE 2.0 CD I created. If I run it from the PE 2.0 CD the problem seems to go away...Oops. Anyhow give that a try if you're having the problem.

Is there a fix for this yet? A patch needs to be issued for existing pre-installed computers. I have this issue on any network share I try to use. I have no problems locally, just over the network on shared folders. When I try to rename any file or folder I get:The M:\ Folder does not exist. The file may have been moved or deleted. I'm connecting from a Vista Ultimate 64 (build 6000) laptop to two different XP machines and a samba server. I can see the files, read and write to the files, but I cannot rename them. The XP machines are set up with the shares shared only to administrators. The administrator accounts on both XP boxes and my vista laptop have the same password. The samba server is set up to allow access with the same administrator account. Everything works fine from both XP boxes. UAC is disabled and I'm logged in as administrator on Vista. I've done a fresh restore, but the problem exists out of the box. This is an HP laptop (dv9260nr) with Vista Ultimate 64 pre-installed, so the most I can do is a factory restore. This pretty much makes Vista pretty crippled for me since we use a central file server for all our stuff and access the computers across the network.

Is there any resolution for this from MS yet? I have the same problem on an Acer laptop... it seems ridiculous that I have to go out an buy a boxed version of Vista after I've already paid for the Vista license with the laptop. Furthermore, Acer doesn't seem to be able to do anything about this... a MS problem they say... MS says it is the job of the OEM licensee to chase down the resolution.... Some action from MS would be appreciated.

I have the exact same problem, running windows vista ultimate, doesnt seem that ultimate to me! Can not create or rename files on my NAS drive or on any PCs with Windows XP pro... Can copy files to the shares no problem, I then have to use a XP machine to create the folder for those files...
February 20th, 2007 3:51am

I have been seeing this problem too with a pre-installed copy of Vista Ultimate 64 on a new HP dv9000 laptop. I have been looking around the net for solutions, and so far the only one I have seen is to do a fresh (non-oem) install, which isn't an option for me. If I had to guess what the problem is, I would guess it is related to locking. I know from experience with Samba that when explorer creates a new folder it first creates a folder called "New Folder", then it renames the folder to whatever you want. My educated guess is that explorer is locking the directory, preventing the rename from suceeding. That would explain why doing a command line rename works. I would also guess that there is some registry setting which fixes this, which made it into the retail version of Vista but didn't make it into the OEM version. Has anyone figured out what registry setting fixes this? I saw a knowledge base article on opportunistic locking, but I haven't tried turing it off yet.

When it first happened, I thought it was a samba problem too. I tried turning off the locking and oplocks. Then I noticed it was happening on shares on my XP machines too. It did the same thing on every network share. My vista laptop is an HP dv9000 series. I tried re-imaging it, I tried the restore disk, I ordered and tried HPs restore disk, but nothing worked. Then, I did a reinstall with a clean copy and everything works fine now.

Hi thsman, I've recently worked an issue very similar to what you have described with Vista Business Edition OEM. Symptoms, the error "The "\\servername\sharedfolder" does not exist. The file may have been moved or deleted. Do you want to create it?" comes up if a user copies a file from theShare, edits the file and then tries to copy it back. You are however able to successfully save the file locally ? A second issue was not being able to rename folders/files on the Share. Again locally is fine just over the network is an issue. Cause : Possibly the way the OEM vender packaged the OS. Resolution : Create the parameters key in thefollowing location : HKLM/system/currentcontrolset/services/csc/parameters Then within the parameters key, create a DWORD Value namedFormatDatabase with a value of 1(hex) then reboot the machine.

I upgraded from XP Media Center Edition w/SP2 to Vista Home Premium. I didn't have this problem at first, but it just seemed to pop-up & it looks like I'm not alone. I can rename existing folders, save system folders, but when I create a New Folder it will allow you to type a name and when you hit enter it goes back to New Folder for the name. ???? The only work around I found so far is to copy another file & rename it. I hope reinstalling isn't the only solution. Any help will be appreciated.

Finally came across this fix myself after a week of trying to sort this out as my #1 Vista annoyance. Worked for me too and also fixed my Vista annoyance #2. My Offline Folders wouldn't work, kept saying to reboot to finish activation or enabling(or something like that) but rebooting never did anything. After this fix my offline folders came to life as well. I'm running an Acer laptop with an OEM Vista Ultimate.

I feel this problem is far from solved. I'm running Vista Ultimate as administrator. UAC is disabled. I have used Vista almost a month now and the folder renaming problem just appeared. And I can't copy/cut-paste folders either. I'm hoping the re-install isn't the only option.. Any reported inconveniences with software that might cause this?

Disabling offline files fixes this issue. But doesnt help if you need offline files. If you do need need offline files, and the ability to rename folders you can try reinitializing the offline files cache: To reinitialize the Offline Files cache, create the following DWORD registry value with a value of 1 and restart the system. HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CSC\Parameters\FormatDatabase *Note that any unsynchronized changes will be lost. In addition, any files and folders pinned by means other than Folder Redirection or Group Policy will no longer be pinned on that client.*

I am experiencing the same problem - can't rename any folders, local or network - on a clean install of Vista Business using the MAPS partner pack software.I am logged in as Administrator and have tried disabling UAC, switching off AV (Eset NOD32) - neither makes a difference. I can rename using Command Prompt, but no joy in Computer / Network folder view... Is there a standard procedure to follow to resolve this? Trawling through the Technet forums and across the net this seems to be an all too common problem, but no standard responses or procedures to follow. BTW - I have another PC with Vista Ultimate - all is fine. Very similar software setup (NOD32, MS Office etc.)

How doesa bug like this make it in to production??? The original problem in this thread (and the one that I am having) is the inability to rename any folder, regardless of whether it is local or networked. The above fix does not work on this issue. This happened to me months ago, and I had to reinstall to resolve it. It has just now popped up again, for no discernable reason. Microsoft, has any progress been made to resolve this?

Same problem with new FujitsuNotebook with OEM Vista Home Premium. I gave them this thread.I cannot contact MS directly because this is an OEM OS. This is such a basic function of the Windows OS, it should be fixed by now. If the date bar is correct on this forum, this problem has been going on since the Beta version, July of last year, is that correct ???????? The other mentioned fixes here will not work, I have no "online Files" in my control panel. The Registryworkaround, mentioned above and by MS: KB934160 did not help either, and I don't know if I should leave that newreg. entryon my machine or not? 5-30 Fujitsu calls, has no fix, called MS paid the $ 59.00 fee, tech had no solution, asked for refund. Hey, I'm trying to run SFC (sfc.exe) from Command Prompt as administrator on my own laptop to see if any corrupted files are causing this. However Vista tells me only an "Administrator running a Consolesession can run this."??? I look in help for console session and get gobbledeguk: Microsoft Management Console (MMC) A tool used by computer administrators to manage the hardware, software, and network components of Windows. Both Microsoft and other software vendors offer programs, called snap-ins, that run within MMC to manage specific areas of Windows. And does not tell me how to get to it? Do I own my Computer or not???? If I try to run it from "run" in start up window a black dos screen flashes for a half a second then nothing??? How is MS keeping this so quite???? Seems the internet, like CNET etc. should be all over this, is the payoff in full swing here or just denile by those that should lose their jobs........

I tried doing a 'restore' from both the hard drive and from the HP restore CD, but neither worked.I ended up returning my 2 week old laptop and getting a replacement. The replacement had newer versions of several drivers, so I assume that it was a 'fresher' install than my original one. The new laptop had no problems. This problem does appear to be related to OEM installed versions of vista.
June 6th, 2007 2:48pm

I'm in windows classic, so it was; Start,Programs, Accessories, right click on CM, go Administrator, type in sfc/SCANNOW. Let's see that's only about 6 clicks more then it took with Windows 98se. And the Dos window it brings up is not full window and I can't expand it to read last words on right side, cursor does not work on it's expansion icon, anyone remember key board command to expand a dos window??? Like above scan showed nothing. About install of OEM vs. box, from some messages abovethe problem only seems to appear after acertain time periodwhenloaded frombox anyway.

I'd really have to laugh at this if it wasn't so serious for some people. While working with a tech this morning at Fujitsu, who again, said he hadn't heard of this folderproblem, he admittedhe isworking on a PC with XP, that is blocked from going toforums on internet. So, he could not even look at this problem thatnow has over 13,000 people watching. I asked"can you duplicate the problem on your machine",......pause, answer, " We are not using Vista".......Oh, just selling new Laptops with it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
June 8th, 2007 12:00pm

I encountered the same problem. I created a new partition and clean installed vista ultimate rtm from msdn media not oem.I copied my main documents folder from the ws2k3 partition to the vista c: drive. The vista install has one user - me - set up as an administrator. When I tried to rename the folder nothing happened - although I did notice somewherein the details screen that the object name had changed. I can't remember if I was able to add, rename, delete other folders at this point. My snap conclusion was that there was a conflict with the ws2k3 permissions. I could not see anything untoward in the security tab, but I figured maybe the problem was buried deep the folder hierarchy. After reading this thread I disabled offline files, restarted. It made no diff, but I could create and modify other folders. I created a new folder in c:\users and cut and pasted the sub folders. For now at least all is fine and dandy.

Are you able to change the name of that folder from "New Folder", to anything else????

Microsoft tech called this evening again. We spent 30 min. fooling around with things. Nothing accomplished. He said I have to reinstall Vista from OEM disc. From what I'm reading here that does not work. ( I declined doing that ),I asked if he could reproduce problem on his PC, he claims no, they are running Vista Ultimate.

I have found the solution if ur tired of wasting ur time reading forums like me(i've spent over 4 days trying to find a way to fix this) 1 thing is for sure, time is money ... 2 windows vista came out way too early because its FULL of bugs, now let me make sure i solve y our problem ... certain day, i made the BIGGEST mistake of my life and wasted 380 dollars on vista ultimate... now 30% of all my programs are compatible,.. the search option on win vista SUX ... it is way too complicated and time wasting... so, the best thing to do is, get your windows vista disc, put it in a safe place for about 2 years, format HD, install windows XP pro , be happy untill 2009 ... by then it will be compatible ebough to THINK about using it... i have 4 computers at home, and 1 laptop ... 4 of these machines came with windows vista.. and now they are all running on windows XP which is 2021313901238012 times better... so, if ur using windwos vista JUST because the graphics are cool, Im sorry but you aint being that smart... LOL ...

Has anyone here had a permanentcure by reinstalling a Vista OEM version?
June 18th, 2007 12:41pm

I'm wondering why this subject thread has gone silent,....can anyone else see this message? Anyway, I reinstalled Vista Home Premium, over itself, ( with diskthat came withnew notebook, "Windows anytime upgrade",which is confusing to me, as this is not an upgrade, this machine was designed for Vista???), keeping all my settings, ( well most of them, it turned Aero on again ),and programs, documents, photos, etc. It took about 2 hrs. However, I did not let it install updates first. After restart, I could rename folders again. My thinking then was that the problem might be the updates. So, I downloaded all 17 of them. But,so far,( one hour),I can still rename folders. I'll re-post if the bug comes back.

I was unable to rename a folder this morning. I checked the permissions but there was no obvious reason why. I am a member of administrators and the administrator had full control.I could not delete the folder either. It prompted me for permissions but then failed. I could create, rename and delete new folders which had identical permissions. The difference was the troublesome folder had several layers of child folders. There seems to be something in Vista which blocks destructive operations on a parent folder when the folder hierarchy reaches a certain level. I found that by successively deleting folders from the bottom up I was eventually able to remove the whole lot. Apologies if this commentis not entirely related to the thread, or if it is already mentioned earlier in the thread, or if I am simply ignorant of a well-known feature
June 28th, 2007 6:17am

I bought a copy of Vista Ultimate straight from MICROSOFT and installed it on a computer that had XP. The rename worked fine and all of a sudden quit. None of the suggestions have worked for me either. I'm getting ready to email the relative who sent it to me at MS and see if he knows anything.

same issue here sometimes i just have to copy paste some files into another named folder
June 29th, 2007 11:59am

To complete my previous comment, I should say my initial diagnosis was wrong. The reason I could not rename/delete my folder was actuallybecause a child folder at the bottom of the hierarchy had the "delete sub folders and files"special permission disabled. It is annoying that Windows does not provide an informative error message instead of just failing silently (perhaps there is something in the event log?).

Ok after a lot of reading here and on the V-lite forum I figured out the Rename issue starts after installation of one of these two updates1) Windows6.0-KB938194-x862) Windows6.0-KB938979-x86 (I suspect this one from what I can tell)uninstalling the updates doesn't fix the issue because it's something the updates did to the registry and if you use the registry fix mentioned above it does fix the issue (at least it did for me) and you don't even have to reboot it's instantHere is a link to the fix to avoid everyone from having to register on the other site to get the filehttp://www.biline.ca/dl_files/Folder_rename_fix_Vista_32.zip Remember I didn't write/create this just used it and it worked fine for myself and a few others who have tried it so use at your own risk....To install the file download it extract the file which is called 'FD32.reg' right click on it and select 'Merge' you'll get a warning about how this could Foobar the system ignore and click OK. now if you can't install that way then extract it to a specific location, lets say drive C:\ then go Start - Run (or Win+R) - type: regedit c:\FD32.reg It should popup something about merging ignore and click OK. DONE....

I would like to say, thank you, for this one. I had two new Acer laptops running Vista Business and another 'backup' system running Vista Business with file sharing enabled. The laptops were experiencing this problem creating either files or folders on the shares. Right clicking in the browser and selecting New Text document or New Folder would allow the object to be created but would not allow the name to be changed, claiming the parent directory was not there and asking if I wanted to create it (repeatedly if I answered Yes), until I said, No. The file or folder was created, however, withthe default name, and could subsequently be deleted, but not renamed. The same would happen with new documents created in Word. Creating the Parameters key and the DWORD value within it, as described, resolved the issue (I did also turn off Offline Files, and then turned it back on, before rebooting). I did wonder if it had anything to do with the fact that Offline Folders was turned on but not initialized - as nothing had been set to be offline files at this stage. Bearing in mind the length of time this issue has been around it is surprising it had not been resolved in a hotfix, or something, and more widely known about - I found lots of people with this or similar issues by trawling the web but none others with satisfactory fixes. I have, however, experienced a similar (unrelated) local problem with the filing system on the backup system whereby, even with full permission set on a directory, files and directories show up as Read Only (even after unsetting) and backup files (from a database backup) will refuse to be overwritten - forcing me to create a (java) script file to move the original file out of the way, and then delete it after the backup file had been recreated. But this should probably be in another thread.

I believe I have the same problem, however mine did not give me this error for months after I installed it, now it's here. I am only having problems when I try to right click and go to New > Folder and if I leave the folder named New Folder it's fine, but when I try to rename it, I get the error stopping me. I could still create and rename files though. I was playing around with the settings in Windows Media Player right before this occured. I changed tons of the options in all of the tabs so it may have had something to do with something changing in there. I believe I also used to vlite CD as well, but the problem didn't start until now. Anyways, I found the fd64.zip file and patched the registry with that and it solved the problem! It's really weird that it didn't start until now either, I didn't restart the computer before it began or anything with the updates.

hi ... i am digging a little bit deeper to get it filed as a bug and get an official fix out to the public. here is what i found by comparing the fixed REG with an affected PC: The areas in red where missing. 1. i added the marked red values from the first key and the renaming worked... 2. i removed the same values again and renaming still worked 3. i will try to restart the PC and find a way to reproduce the error... But just to know adding one of the following will fix the issue. I've been dealing with this issue since I started implementing Vista. I rolled out Vista to one of my clients before others.I basically have two network drives, a general share and then a private, home share. I went through all the same steps as everyone else did and finally came across the resolution of adding the FormatDatabase with a Hex value of 1 to registry key of HKLM/system/currentcontrolset/services/csc/parametersAnd then for good measure, I would turn off offline folders. This solved any problems I had with on the general share. But I continue to have the same issue with the private, home share. When I go to New -> Folder, I get an error window saying Destination Folder Access Denied. You need permission to perform this action. There is nothing unique about my network. I have two servers, an SBS 2003 server and a Win 2003 R2 file server. The shares are all located on the file server, and the private shares are created using the Microsoft means of adding the UNC path to the folder in the Home Folder part of the box on the profile tab of a created user. Anyway, the method is correct - and it is no shock that my XP users have no problem. All my Vista laptops are from Dell (as are my servers) so we're dealing with the OEM version.Has anyone else seen or fixed this issue as I describe it? Where you can fix the issue for general network shares but have trouble with the private/home share?

and Microsoft has FINALLY ackowledged this issue. Too bad Vista has been out 339 days (279 days retail).http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934160
November 7th, 2007 6:49pm

I've done some troubleshooting on my own and have an answer for this - but the circumstances are strange.I have two servers on my site:Server1 (Windows 2003 SBS)Server2 (Windows 2003 R2)Both are DCs.Server2 has all the data storage. I have a share called "shared" and another share called "home$" which the users map their home folders to in the form of:\\server2\home$\%username%My Vista users are getting the error described in KB 934160 when accessing their home folder. However, they do not get an error when accessing the "shared" share after I disabled offline folder caching.I have found that if I map the user's home folder to \\server2\%username% (presuming I shared the user's folder appropriately), I get no errors. Here are other things I tried:map user home folder to \\server2\any-other-share - WORKS CORRECTLYmap user home folder to \\server2\other-share\other-folder-name - WORKS CORRECTLYmap user home folder to \\server2\other-share$\other-folder-name - WORKS CORRECTLYmap user home folder to \\server2\home$\other-folder-name - DOES NOT WORKmap user home folder to \\server2\home$\%username% - DOES NOT WORKIn each case, I let ADUC create the home folder, as I put in the path for the home folder (I usually do connect h: to \\server2\home$\%username%) so I know that each folder was created with the same permissions since Windows did it.Based on this, the problem only seems to be with subfolders of my home$ share when I map direcly to the subfolder. But if I create other shares (with or without the $ at the end of the share name), I have no probelms. So in the short term, for my Vista users, I'm going to reshare out their home folders. They will have access to the same data at either:\\server2\home$\%username%or\\server2\%username%The difference is that the second option will not give the error. If I find something more helpful, I will post back.

November 8th, 2007 12:27pm

as an interesting side note - Vista Backup Status and Configuration is not affected by this issue. I will explain.I set all my laptops to use backup status and configuration for backup. They all back up straight to their H drives (home folders). When I set it up, it prompts me for credentials. I find it easier to put admin credentials here rather than user credentials becuase if the user changes his/her password, the backup will fail. Anyway, using the admin credentials, the backup succeeds. Then I thought, maybe the user's credentials are the problem. Perhaps if the user is accessing the share using admin credentials, it will work. Not true. I went to manage my network passwords and told it to use the admin crednetials when accessing server2, and I get the same error. So it is not a user issue, this is still a Vista issue.

Wehave exactly the same problem on 2 SBS servers and all the Vista machines... Problem: Even logged in as a domain admin, we can create folders on previously accessible shares (with XP,) but Vista seems to require some other permissions. Interestingly, if we open a Command Prompt on the same Vista box that cant properly access the shares and we can MD/RD, rename, delete and create?! The conditions are: -SBS 2003 R2 with all service packs applied. -Vista Business with all updates applied. (We have not installed SP1(RC)) - KB 926505 has been applied -Vista computers were manually joined to the domain without error. We purposely did not use the //server/connectcomputer wizard. -We then attempted to join the domain with //server/connectcomputer, but we has so many errors returned by nshelp.exe that we aborted. Results: -Vista logs into SBS domainwithout error -Outlook 2007 connects to Exchange and all functions operate normally. -The ONLY problem we can find the permissions problem using shares on server. One customer has already boxed up the Vista computers and shipped them back, but other REALLY needs us to find a solution to this issue! Any help would be gratly appreciated!!! Thanks, -Paul R

Now, however, something has changed and the Vista boxes don't properly connect. I mean, they do connect, in fact everything appears normal until to try to use a network share. However, if we open a command prompt on the same Vista box and go to a mapped drive, we can copy, rename, md, rd, etc. etc...

LOL ... after joining 10 Vista boxes to an SBS domain and unfortunately NOT finding this shares/permissions glitch until afterwards, our client boxed up all the new Vista machines and sent them back. The Vista machines that we're joined 8 months are ok, so it seemed like a no-brainer to add more. NOT!!!It's ironic, Macs and Linux connect without error to the same SBS shares...-Not LOL.

I have tried applying the one line registry fix by adding the FormatDatabase=1. <<Dell tech support found this thread>>This however did NOT work for me. I have not tried the registry patch provided. It has so many keys that are modified (it might be better than reloading but I don't know what is being fixed or why it may work. I appreciate however that it is availalble. Thanks for posting and shareing, but please tell us more about it.).My environment - 2 new DELL laptops - Windows Vista Business, SBS 2003 ServerI was not able to rename files/folders on the share. I was not able to do a file save as... from Microsoft Office 2007. The file would be saved but be empty (have no data). A tip from an earlier poster mentioned that perhaps this is a problem with share name. I have always used hidden shares by specifying the $ after the share. I have left the existing share in place however created a new share without the hidden parameter "$". I am now able to rename folders and files. And I can save files from Office 2007. I would still like to know more about the .reg patch file that was created to fix problem. Does this somehow tell Vista that hidden shares are ok. However for now I have fixed the problem by not using hidden share for vista machine.

Also, I have found that it does not work to have folder under the share mapped directly. So replacing \\server\user$\%username% with \\server\users\username also does not work despite not having a hidden share. However having \\server\%username% does work. %username% is what I use in my batch file to map folder. %username% utilized the enviromnet variable username.I hope that this helps someone further.

NOTE: SOLVED A SIMILAR PROBLEM ON MY MACHINE!Where I work, we have home folders on a server in the server room:\\servername\users\username1This file is designated as our home folder somehow in Active Directory according to our IT guys.I got a new Dell Laptop running Microsoft Vista and found that I could not rename or move files created under my home folder. I could create a folder (for example, "New Folder") but could not change the name to something else.I ultimately had our IT guys create a share of the folder:\\servername\username1This allowed me to access the files in my home folder normally, as long as I used the share and did not browse to the home folder directly. For what it's worth, I was getting and Access Denied error both in windows explorer and from the command prompt when using the folder directly.I noticed that I was not having the problem on the laptop in safe mode. Nor did I have the problem on my desktop running Microsoft Vista. I set about comparing all the services and other processes running in all scenarios and began killing off the potential culprits one-by-one.I finally got to WavXDocMgr.exe (the very last one in my list of potential offenders..) in task manager. After killing this process, I was able to access my home folder normally. This file is part of the software installed for the external Dell-branded fingerprint reader on my new Dell Laptop. It belongs to the EMBASSY Trust Suite by Wave Systems and was some sort of document manager.Since I didn't really like the software anyway (really slow logging into the machine), I unistalled the software, rebooted, and the problem was gone!

I have a similar problem. I right click and pick rename to simply rename a folder... then a box keeps popping up wanting to rename the files inside that folder. All I want to do is rename the damn folder, nothing on the inside. BOY!!! Microsoft really outdid themselves this time with Vista...what a piece of ***!

Ok, so I thought that the registry patch didn't work either. The thing is, you need to run it as an Administrator. If you don't, you THINK you successfully added the entries to your registry, as Winblows doesn't give you an error message, but in reality, you haven't done it. To get it to work, you first have to do the following:You can enable the built-in administrator account by going to Start andtyping cmd.exe In the results, right click cmd.exe and select the Run AsAdministrator option. In the command window, type the following command:net user administrator /active:yesPress Enter. This will make the built-in admin account visible on the login screen. Then you 'switch user' to Administrator, double click on the file with the registry entries, click on the button saying 'Yes, I really am certain I don't want all my folders to be named New Folder (X) you idiotic excuse for an OS' and hey presto, you get back this eclectic functionality. But hey, who needs to rename folders anyway? Let's leave that up to the registry entries! GEEZ!!!

Sorry guys, I was wrong. I had only tested it on the Administrator account. My normal account still has problems.

So we are in 2012 now and MS did not even bother to fix this issue yet, the ultimate solution for this is to Go to Control Panel / Offline Files / click Disable Offline Files / Reboot
