Unable to print from my Vista on network with XP pro
I have a desktop with XP pro and a HP officejet k60 printer connected via USB. I just bought a laptop with Vista Home Premium. My home network works just fine. Both computers can see each other, and I am able to save on each others shared folders. I can select the printer from my laptop with Vista, but nothing prints. I can tell it to print a test page, and it looks like it gets sent, but nothing comes out of the printer. The printer works just fine when I connect it to the laptop via USB. And yes, the desktop is on. How do I fix it?

Hi, From your post, I understand that There is a HP officejet k60 printer plugged into a XP machine and is shared to a Vista machine. You find that you cannot print via this network printer on the Vista machine. However, it works fine if you plug the printer into the Vista machine directly. To perform further research and troubleshoot the issue, please help collect some information using the following methods: 1. Enable spooler event log on both machines:a. Go into printers folderb. Right click a blank area in the printers window, click Run as Administrator, click Server Properties c. Select Advanced tab, and make sure the check boxes: Log spooler error events, Log spooler warning events and Log spooler information events have been checked. 2. On the Vista machine, try to print a document again through the network printer. 3. Double click the print queue on both Vista and XP machine to trace the status. 4. Please check:a. if the print job has pass to XPb. the print job status (error or printed out) 5. Please collect the print events on both machines to me:a. Open Event Viewer, click Windows logs, click System. b. Collect the events which the source is print. BTW, this is a printer issue, so please submit this type of case to Windows Vista Printing forum at next time. Thank you for your understanding. Joson, I printed a test page from the Vista computer over the network printer, and the print job status shows "spooling" for a quartersecond on both computer's print queue, then disapears. The status does not change to"printing" and the printer doesn't print. There were no events where the source is print. The printer does print when Iprint atest page from the XP computer, and the print queue shows "printing". The only other thing I can add is that on the k series printer properties on the XP computer, Vista is not listed as an additional driver. I hope this helps. Larry

Hi Larry, Based on the current situation, I suspect that it may be a driver issue. Please perform the following information to try to resolve the issue: 1. On the Vista machine, go into printers folder 2. Click Add a printer. 3. Click Add a local printer 4. Click Create a new port, select Local Port, and then click Next 5. Type the share name. For example:\\IPAddressofXPMachine\ShareNameOfPrinter 6. Continue the wizard and install the Vista compatible driver for the device. Sincerely, Joson Zhou Microsoft Online Community Support
