Unable to preview RTF files in Windows 8.1 Files Explorer

Hi gentleman,

I'm unable to preview RTF files if this file contain pictures or object pasted.

In the PREVIEW PANE, I can see all the content of the RTF file if it does not contain any pictures or object pasted.

If I paste the image in middle of the document, in the PREVIEW PANE I will see all the text before the image but everything after including image it is no longer visible.  Is it normal and is it possible to fix it ?

(sorry for my english)

Thanks !!!

Jacques

Hi,

My preview pane display fine with RTF files with pictures.

Did you set the accosiation of RTF file with Microsoft word?

If not, please first set the RTF file opened by Word, and check if your issue still persists.

Not sure if this issue can be caused by 3rd part software conflict, please check if it can work in Clean boot mode.

If the issue doesnt appear, you can determine which one can be the cause by using dichotomy in MSconfig. Checking on half of Non-Microsoft service and restart, determining which half of the services cause the issue and repeating to check half of the problematic half services.

In addition, since this preview pane works as a Windows feature, please try to repair system by following command to see if we can fix this issue:

Run CMD as admin:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Any update on your issue, please post back with your test results.

What format are you using for the images or objects? What program are you using to view the RTF files?
If you are facing this issue with all the file types, then, please check if Preview handler is disabled in the Preview pane.
a. While in File Explorer, click on the View tab.
b. Click on Options and choose Change Folder and Search Options.
c. Now, click on View tab.
d. Check the Show preview handlers in preview pane box, and click Apply and OK.
e. Check the issue now.

RTF supports inclusion of JPEG, Portable Network Graphics (PNG), Enhanced Metafile (EMF), Windows Metafile (WMF), Apple PICT, Windows Device-dependent bitmap, Windows Device Independent bitmap and OS/2 Metafile picture types in hexadecimal (the default) or binary format in a RTF file. Not all of these picture types are supported in all RTF readers. When a RTF document is opened in software that does not support the picture type of an inserted picture, such picture is not displayed at all.

RTF writers usually convert inserted pictures from an unsupported picture types (e.g. BMP, TIFF, GIF, etc.) to one of supported picture types (PNG, WMF) or they do not include pictures at all.
