Unable to load user profile
Multiple times per day, we are receving the Unable to load user profile error on our Windows 7 Pro machines. These machines pull a mandatory roaming profile from the server during logon. The problem is, randomly the user is presented with this error. I can then go to the administrative user and using regedit.exe delete the registry entry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-21-xxxxx-xxxx. This fixes the problem and the user can once again login and pull their mandatory roaming profile. But then, several hours later, they will get the error again. I can again login in to the administrator and fix the problem, but then the error will eventually come back. What is going on? We have 5 machines configured with mandatory roaming profiles and all are using Windows 7 Pro and a Windows 2k8R2 server and they are all doing the same thing.

Hi, Thanks for the post. This issue may be caused by the saved profile which is corrupted, you may delete the profile and try to log on with the same account for a test. If it does not work, please follow the steps in the article below to re-create a mandatory profile. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973289 In addition, you may provide the exact error message or error code in the Event Log if the issue reoccurs. If it were a corrupted saved profile, why would five different machines, logging in as five different users all end up having a corrupted saved profile? And if, that were the case, is there any way to tell Windows not to save the profile in the first place? I can delete the saved profile and then log back in and it works correctly. My problem is that eventually the problem occurs again and I have to delete the saved profile again. I have recreated the mandatory profile SEVERAL times. I don't think this is the problem, because I can successfully use the profile over and over and then suddenly I get this error. I delete the SID from the registry and boom, I'm back up and running, but then it does it again at some random time. I have provided a link to what I believe is the offending errors in the event log. This log was generated on a Windows 7 machine: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/21805595/errors.evtx Thanks, Michael

Hi, I opened the log and found there is a log shows that the filename or extension is too long. Please check the files in the mandatory profile again. You may create a new mandatory profile and save to a new path. The following link is for your reference. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc978785.aspx Also, please uninstall the SEP during the test to eliminate the 3rd party cause. Since these profiles do not have any unique files created in them. These are slightly modified default profiles. I didn't see how a filename or extension could be too long, since it would have been generated by Windows. However, I did as you suggested and even uninstalled SEP. This did not fix the problem. It wasn't until I edited the group policy Computer Configuration-->Policies-->Administrative Templates-->System-->User Profiles and enabled "Do not forcefully unload the users registry at user logoff" and "Wait for remote user profile". Once I enabled these two settings, everything appeared to begin to work properly. I will monitor for the next few days and report if it doesn't work. Thank you, Michael

Okay, this still didn't work. I've discovered that when I log back into the machine that the previous SID and user profiles are present. I can manually delete the SID from the registry and it fixes the problem. And then, what I'm seeing in the user folder is this: username domain.username domain.username.000 domain.username.001 domain.username.002 domain.username.003 domain.username.004 domain.username.005 What is going on?

Hi, Because you have deleted the SID of users, but the profiles have not been deleted in the meantime so that it happened. If the profile is already existing, System will create a similar profile name folder. Regards, Juke TechNet Subscriber support in form.
