Unable to link Windows Live ID to my computer account...
Hey y'all. Anyone else having an issue getting their Windows Live ID to link with their account? For the past couple of weeks I get the error message "We can't sign you in. Our server is having a problem. We're working to fix it as soon as we can, so try again in a few minutes." There is nothing obvious about why it won't sign in, but I am behind a network proxy that requires authentication. Is it possible the linking service isn't grabbing the proxy info from the system, thus never reaching the Live ID server? Thanks for any assistance. Is this ID you are using is the problematic ID, or you could log on with the ID on another computer that is using another network? If you can log with the ID on another computer, it should be network issue. Can you log on Windows Live Messenger? I suggest that you temporary disable the anti-virus and firewall. Then reset IE settings. 1. Click Start, please type inetcpl.cpl (without quotation marks) in the Start Search bar and press Enter to open the Internet options window.2. Switch to the Advanced tab.3. Click the "Reset Internet Explorer Settings" button.4. Click Reset to confirm the operation.5. Click Close when the resetting process has finished.6. Uncheck the "Enable third-party browser extensions" option in the Settings box.7. Click Apply, click OK. If the issue still occurs, the issue may be caused by the proxy. Do you have another computer in your network and works well?

Thanks for your reply, Arthur. The ID I'm wanting to link to my Windows account is the main ID I've been using for many years to link with previous versions of Windows, XP & 2000. With Windows Vista & 7 RC the error occurs while attempting to do this. I can log this ID in with WLM and via web-browser on both my problematic computer and other computers on this network. The above suggestion had no effect after the IE settings were completed. Still receiving the same "Our server is having problems...". Now if I enter a wrong ID (which is, of course, my email address of many years), the message changes to "The sign-in information was incorrect. Please try again." So it appears the server is working perfectly to recognize correct IDs, just not link them to my computer. Any additional thoughts?A teacher affects eternity: he can never tell where his influnce stops.

I did but after some e-mail yelling and even a Microsoft call back I got my issies straight There was some back end server updates that while accounts were being updated in the background some processed hose many of the accounts. There's 2 way to try and fix this by yourself One goto http://accounts.live.com change your password ABC 123 keep it under 8 charctorsBefor running the link app goto internet Options click on delete and un check Preserve password and sign in data check everything else click delete go back into the delete control recheck preserve password and sign in data go back into account manager and view cradentals remove the cradentals with windows Live token in the name Then go back to link IDs if it fails Go into control Panel Adminstative tools Services you Want Services rt click and Run as Adminstator if running vista or win 7 look up Windows Live ID assistant service and to the left you should see stop start restart (RESTART) that pig go back to linking ID and sign in with (NEW PASSWORD) created above Before opening IE or using WL Essentalappsgive it a few seconds then try a windows live ID site the common ones home hotmail How to tell Windows Live ID link the common boarder at the top has a shiney highlight Or try the mods options belowPosted By Mikro

You gave some great instructions, Mikro, but unfortunately nothing worked. My cmcole101@hotmail.com main WL Id has been reset with a strong listed password, and everywhere logs into correctly EXCEPT the Windows Live ID linking. I still get the error message that the servers are unavailable and my ID will not link to my Windows Vista or Windows 7 RC account. :-( I'm giving up on it. Ultimately it doesn't do anything special enough for me to have a headache over. It's just a chalk-up to how Windows operates, and even though I'm a computer engineer whose built up his career on Windows, from NT 3 all the way through XP until I moved over to Mac OSX, I know this is how pesty Windows can be. It's just no longer worth me hasseling over it. Thanks HUGELY for your assistance. :-)A teacher affects eternity: he can never tell where his influnce stops.

There were some Windows Live ID team catching up rolling out Windows Live ID 6.5 support since it was done all my problems went away. The Windows Live ID Sign in Assistant app seems to be be a bit unstable I've tracked it back to sites setting old cookies and the app not knowing what to do with it. So I cleared out all internet options deleted Options including the Preserving sign in data and password data then trying again On top of that I did a lenghy re-install of the Sign in Assistant link app in win 7 by uninstalling restarting the computer re-installing it then trying againalso days went by the backend servers settled down and it all started working again.Posted By Mikro

Hi! I have the same problem and message saying that "We cannot sign you on etc." My OS is Windows 7 SP1 Ent. Guess what? We're using proxy server (with authentication)! Now i'm at home and have no problem to link my LiveID account to our corporate Windows 7. So the question is - how does this "Link Live ID" work that it fails with a proxy? UPD: We've checked logs from poxy. LinkLiveID attempts to authenticate as DOMAIN\Computername$. Can i resolve this or should I wait for fix?
