Hi Angel_1701, Please temporary disable or uninstall the security software such as firewall and anti-virus software installed to check the result. If the issue persists, access Clean Boot to check the issue. If the issue disappears in the Clean Boot environment, you can continue to narrow down which entry is causing the issue. Besides, you can run Windows Update troubleshooting tool by going to Start -> Control Panel -> Troubleshooting -> Fix problems with Windows Update. If the issue still exists, could you please provide the System Information for further research? 1. Press Start, type in msinfo32 in the Start Search bar and then press Enter. 2. Choose Save from the File menu and save it as an NFO file. 3. Find the file, right-click on this file, click "Send To", and click "Compressed (zipped) Folder". ++++ For your convenience, I have created a workspace for you. You can upload the information files to the following link. Hi Linda, I tried the clean boot as suggested but no luck. I've tried turning off my firewall and anti-virus software (windows own firewall & AVG) but that didn't solve the problem either. I've uploaded my System Info file to the workspace provided.

Hi Angel_1701, After checking the System Information you provided, I noticed that there are still many startup items such as Google Update, uTorrent, Skype are listed. It is recommended disabling all startup items and third party services when booting. This method will help us determine if this issue is caused by a loading program or service. Please perform the following steps: 1. Click the Start Button type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box, and then press Enter. Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User Account Control (UAC) window. 2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray). 3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK". Then, restart the computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK. Please test this issue in the Clean Boot environment, if the issue disappears in the Clean Boot environment, we can re-enable the items one by one to see if the cause can be found. If the issue still exists, uninstalling all Google software and see if the issue can be resolved. Also, run the Windows Update Troubleshooting Tool by going to Start -> Control Panel -> Troubleshooting -> Fix problems with Windows Update.

Hi Linda tried turning off all services and all startup apps as suggested but it didn't solve the issue. I noticed that the update fails when trying to create a restore point so I tried to turn that off but I couldn't find the option anywhere. I've looked for the system protection tab where system restore is meant to be but I can't find it. Also I ran the update troubleshooter but it couldn't find anything wrong. I've uploaded another system information file as requested

Try resetting Windows Update components by using this Fix it Tool. If the issue still exists, rename the Windows Update Softwaredistribution folder by the steps below: 1. Close all the open windows. 2. Click the Start Button, click "All programs", and click "Accessories". 3. Right-click "Command Prompt" and click "Run as administrator". 4. In "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type in "net stop WuAuServ" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Note: Please look at the cmd window and make sure it says that it was successfully stopped before we try to rename the folder. However, if it fails, please let me know before performing any further steps and include any error messages you may have received when it failed. 5. Click the Start Button, in the "Start Search" box, type in "%windir%" (without the quotes) and press Enter. 6. In the opened folder, look for the folder named "SoftwareDistribution". 7. Right-click on the folder, select Rename and type "SDold" (without the quotes) to rename this folder. 8. While still in the "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type the command "net start WuAuServ" (without the quotes) in the opened window to restart the Windows Updates service. Note: Please look at the cmd window and make sure it says that it was successfully started. However, if it failed, please let me know before performing any further steps and include any error messages you may have received when it failed.

Hi Linda, I ran the fix it tool in both modes but windows update still didn't install. I then renamed the Windows Update Softwaredistribution folder as per the instructions, no error messages were recieved but the update still didn't install.

My computer began to suffer from other problems since I last updated this thread. The only way to solve the issue was to format and reinstall. So far I haven't had the same issue.
