This error is caused by a bug in the driver for Intel ICH5R chipset that results in critical disk 0 not being marked as fixed hard disk. There is no workaround because. According to Intel, this version is not Windows 7 compatible: http://support.intel.com/support/chipsets/imsm/sb/CS-023616.htm

I have windows 7 ent (64 bit) and now I cannot create a restore point. 1. get a "writer experinced a non-transient error (0x800423F4) 2. tried some of the hot fixes for VSS, and even though they show up as Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 - I was unable to install. Error was this version is not applicable. 3. Listed the writers using vssadmin. I have a non-retyable error on the "Registry Writer' Would appreciate if someone knows how to get this fixed. Thanks a lot.
