Unable to copy files from XP PC to Vista PC
Hi, I have read the posts by Jason on Network sharing and everything is as the instructions show however the problem is......I have a new PC with Vista Utimate, I want to copy occasional files from my old PC running XP on the home network, but without using 'Easy Transfer'. I am the only user and an Administrator on both PCs and 'Own' all the folders on both PCs (therefore with full rights ...I checked!) . When I try to drag and drop from the XP PC (which I can see and browse via the network) to the new Vista PC, the file appears in the Vista PC's folder but then I get the dreaded error message 'Destination Folder Access Denied.......You need permission to perform this action'.... Only two options are given , 'RETRY' or 'CANCEL' ....Obviously 'RETRY' does nothing more than reshow the message and therefore I have to click 'CANCEL' I watch as the file is then removed from the destination folder and I am back where I started. If I drag and drop files from within the Vista PC to this folder (i.e.on the same machine), all works ok. What more 'Permission' do I need to move files from another PC to the Vista PC? I have tried turning off UAC, sharing the folder, and even sharing the C drive and setting permissions for 'everyone' and 'annonymous users 'to the folder and the C drive, but it still will not let me copy files from another PC on the network even though I can drag and drop them.....what am I doing wrong? or is this a bug in Vista? I believe I understand NTFS permissions but this has me frustrated. Does anyone know how to overcome this please? thanks bj

You need to take ownership of the files on the other XP drive. To do this Right click on the folder, choose Advanced and click on Owner. Your logon from Vista should be listed as an option, click on that and check the box that includes subfolders and hit OK. You may have to close out the XP folder and re-enter to then access the files.
