Unable to contact DHCP server. request has timed out.
Hi All, I hope someone can help. This problem has quite frankly kicked my backside and I can only hope someone here can help. Last Thursday my PC crashed while I was playing Warcraft and ever since then I have been unable to connect to the internet. The icon shows a exclaimation mark with a yellow triangle showing no network access. My Laptop, iPhone and second PC all connect to the internet fine. Laptop and iPhone are wireless, second PC is wired. This affects both my wired connection and my wireless on the troublesome box. Wired shows the above and wireless shows 'no connections are available' even tho I live in a block of flats and my laptop shows 6 different wifi connections. The affected PC is the only one running Win7 (RC1). Ok, so backlog finished I have tried the following: 1) Ran ipconfig /all which gives me an APIPA address as follows: C:\Users\All Users.Bedroom>ipconfig /all Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : Bedroom Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : NVIDIA nForce 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-04-4B-17-72-E9 DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::f47f:e75b:152b:d95d%11(Preferred) Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address. . : 169.254.217.93(Preferred) Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : DHCPv6 IAID . . . . . . . . . . . : 184550475 DHCPv6 Client DUID. . . . . . . . : 00-01-00-01-12-7E-5B-A8-00-04-4B-17-72-E9 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : fec0:0:0:ffff::1%1 fec0:0:0:ffff::2%1 fec0:0:0:ffff::3%1 NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled Tunnel adapter isatap.{4AA2FEF8-735E-407F-AC52-C6DB66388D21}: Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Microsoft ISATAP Adapter Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-E0 DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes Tunnel adapter Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface: Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-E0 DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes 2) I then tried to release/renew to which I got: C:\Users\All Users.Bedroom>ipconfig /release Windows IP Configuration Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::f47f:e75b:152b:d95d%11 Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address. . : 169.254.217.93 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : Tunnel adapter isatap.{4AA2FEF8-735E-407F-AC52-C6DB66388D21}: Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Tunnel adapter Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface: Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : C:\Users\All Users.Bedroom>ipconfig /renew Windows IP Configuration An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : unable to con tact your DHCP server. Request has timed out. Fair enough, so i started to look into things that can cause this: 3) Checked all physical connections to the router, which where fine. 4) Power-cycled the router 5) Tried wireless, I got the 'no connections are available' thing. 6) Replaced the router 7) Reinstalled the drivers for wired and wireless 8) Installed different drivers for wired and wireless 9) Ran the netsh int ip reset and netsh winsock reset catalog commands 10) Tried winsockfix which I believe is for XP but I figured it couldnt hurt. 11) Uninstalled all security server. 12) Turned off router security and set it to broadcast SSID 13) Installed WinVista in case 7 was the problem, same thing. 14) Re-installed Windows 7 15) Pinged 127.0.0.1 to ensure adapter was working, it responds 16) Checked services to ensure DNS and DHCP was enabled 18) Updated BIOS 19) Reloaded optomised defaults 20) Reset CMOS 21) Loaded gnoppix to see if it worked. Which it didnt, altho I was not sure what I was doing in linux. 22) Tried different ethernet cables and ports. As I said previously, all other devices work through the same router (even the Xbox) and I find it hard to believe that both the wireless adapter and LAN adapter would fail together. The wireless wasn't even enabled, I rarely use it, mostly its wired on this box. I hope someone can help. Please? Regards, Will

Hi Will, Since the issue occurs even reinstalling Windows 7, I think this issue should be more related to the NIC, please also try the following to have a check: 1. Upgrade the driver for the NIC. 2. If you have another external (not onboard) NIC, please try it. 3. Upgrade the routers firmware and reconfigure the router. 4. If possible, please take the computer to another network and see how it works. Hope this helps. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT

Hi There, Thanks for your reply. The problem is now fixed. The cause? I have no idea. I got fed up waiting for the internet to work and started to use an old PC. In the meantime the PC was unplugged. I plugged it back in to try further to fix it and low and behold it had connected to the network with full internet access. I kinda upset from the perspective that as I never fixed it if it happens again i'll be completely l lost as to what to do. However, in the meantime, at least it's working so I guess i'll thank god for small mercies. Regards, Will

I also am having this exact problem. I began to lose internet access off and on about a week ago when the computer came back from hibernation, but after I reset the modem it would usually connect. Starting yesterday, it will no longer reconnect and Dell support indicates it is not a hardware problem but a Windows problem. I am a novice and would appreciate any suggestions.

Im also having the same problem even after doing a clean re-installation of Windows XP- interesting coincidence- I'm also using a NVIDIA nforce 10/100/1000 like Will01... If anyone ever comes across a solution, please let us all know. I will do the same. :)
