Unable to connect with WPA active in Vista
Dear all, I Have managed to install my wireless card in vista using the XP drivers, and when all is up and running it does detect my wireless router it just will not connect. If i enter the incorrect WEP code Vista tells me that it was incorrect, but when I use the correct one a message appears telling me that Vista was "unable to connect due to a timeout". If i disable WPA security on the router it connects no problem. Any help would be wonderfull

Have you tried setting it to WEP instead of WPA security? I have mine set to WEP and it connects. Though I had the broadcasting turned off and it wouldn't connect at all for some reason.

My router is set to WPA or WEP security and i have tried every combination available in theproperties, although i have just realised the properties I am changing are for a wireless connection i set up manually whilst trying different things to get it to work (in vein) which appears when i goto "Re-order Wireless networks", whereas the connection that is available in the Connect to window is the one automatically detected with the default name and not the one i gave whilst manually attempting the connection. I Have no problem connecting with xp on the same machine using the same hardware and never have.

I am running Vista RC1 (5600) on my laptop and am experiencing the same behavior -- attempting to connect to a wireless network using WPA-Personal with AES encryption fails with a timeout. I am using the correct authentication type and key because if I provide incorrect information, I get a different error saying as much.I can connect to unsecured wireless networks without issue. When looking at informational events from the new Diagnostic Framework, I see that the "root problem" as determined by the tool is in Layer 2, "mulitcast keys not generated before the timeout." Does anyone know what is causing this behavior, and if there is a solution or workaround? Thanks in advace!

try to change the encryption type on your router or access point from AES to TKIP. That worked for me. somehow vista doesn't support AES encryption under WPA1. however it does work perfectly under winxp.
October 6th, 2006 11:10pm

I upgraded to the newest publicly available build (5700) and now the wireless works with WPA using AES. I did determine that the driver for my wireless card (an Intel Pro/Wireless 2100) listed on Windows Update as an optional download broke this functionality. Reverting back to the original driver installed with Vista corrected this issue for me. I hope this helps someone else.

Just curious...while you've got your network connection working now, have you tried connecting to another Vista installation locally? We've got two Vista systems running RC2 (now), and while they each work fine over wireless with WPA to the wired network and beyond, they can't connect to each other. Other wireless systems (running XP) on the net have no trouble with either Vista installation, but the two Vistas just can't see each other. The problem goes away when we switch back to WEP, so we're pretty sure there's some bug in the WPA portion of the wireless stack. Since this is RC2, we're a little concerned. I'll have to check whether reverting to the base driver changes the behaviour.
October 8th, 2006 5:43am

Where did you get the 5700 build from? I have not seen any mention of it on the download site and would like to try it to see if I can get my laptop to connect to my WPA enabled router.

I still have this problem on Vista build 6000 (MSDN release). Using no encryption or WEP works, but as soon as I switch to WPA I get the timeout. I've got a 3COM wireless ADSL modem/router. The computer is a HP nw8440 laptop with a Intel Wiress card build-in. Any news on this issue?

I'm having exactly the same problem with an Intel 3945ABG wireless card in a new Toshiba laptop running Vista Home Premium. Trying to connect to a 3Com router with WPA enabled. It will connect with either encryption disabled or WEP encryption but neither of these are ideal! Just to also add I am having the same problem, also with a 3Com router, vista just refuses to connect in WPA, however using WEP I have no problem. Whilst using XP I can connect in WPA no worries which leads me to believe it is Vista. I am running the recently released Vista Ultimate. I had the same problems in beta but expected that they would be fixed! Any advice is greatly appreciated. Paul

Intel has released updated drivers for the Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection. I downloaded the drivers, 10.6.0.1_VT_130279.zip, version 10.6.0.46,unzipped them and ran DPInst32.exe as an Administrator (Right click > Run as Administrator). I then ran iProDifX.exe as an Administrator. I can now connect to my WPA networks, both 802.11a and 802.11b/g. I also ran Windows Update taking the important and recommended updates. I suspect I did not need to run iProDifX.exe or run Windows Update to fix this issue. I suspect the new drivers fixed the problem. For the Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection, go to this page and select your OS. (In my case Windows Vista* Ultimate, 32-bit version) http://downloadcenter.intel.com/scripts-df-external/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2259 Here's the detailed information for the driver I'm using: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection Driver Provider: Intel Driver Date: 12/19/2006 Driver Version: 10.6.0.46 Note that the file name of the download looks like it matches the driver version, but it doesn't exactly, so don't go by the file name alone! You'd think that the drivers I had, 10.6.0.29 are more recent than those in a file named "10.6.0.1_VT_130279.zip". NOT SO! Think again! Since this driver package is bundled, it actually has two versions, with the 9.1.0.115 version being for a different hardware wireless adapter. Sheesh! Note their download Date shows 1/24/2007. I actually think they posted this just a few days ago because I've been checking. They took a while in QA - Since 12/19. Sure wish I had these earlier. Drivers (Intel Tested) Title Ver.# Date 2. Me too. Installed the drivers, went through all the steps described above and still have the same trouble...
February 11th, 2007 12:37am

I'm not sure the problem is with the driver. I have a brand new Sony (Vista Home Premium) using an Atheros wireless lan chipset and have the same problem - timeout when trying to use *any*encryption but connects fine with no encryption. I've never experienced any problem with a variety of wireless nics and MS OSs (going back to Win98.) I've also upgraded the nic driver but the problem is still there. I'm starting to think it's a bug with Vista's WPA1 WPA implementation.

I agree, I just bought a brand new HP DV9205 which comes loaded with Vista Ultimate.. I too am having the WPA issues, I've resorted to wep for now.. guess I might have to get a new router one of these days and get myself hitched up with WPA2T.
February 13th, 2007 1:15pm

I'm also having this timeout problem with my Safecom PCI LAN adapter. I'm beginning to wonder if it is a Vista incompatibility with my router, rather than my network card. I'm trying to connect to a 3Com ADSL router, is anyone experiencing these timeout problems with a different brand of router?

I'm connecting to a NetGear WGU624. Using 802.11b/g or 802.11a gave the same results. It just wouldn't do WPA until I upgraded the driver and got lucky. Now it's working fine. I had no issues with my Buffalo router at homme using WEP.My cubicle mate said it just starting work for him at some point. Go figure! I'm convinced it's a Vista issue combined with the drivers regardless of the access point used.
February 14th, 2007 11:19pm

It's certainly a confusing issue, I had to use the XP drivers with Vista to get the card detected and working, I've read reports from other users with the same card who had no problems connecting once they had the drivers installed, that's what made me wonder about the router possibly being a common link.Like all the other people having this trouble, I've had no problems whatsoever running this kit in XP, so hopefully it is a niggle in the new Vista network code or a compatibility problem with using the XP drivers, I'm certainly not willing to replace any of my wireless kit simply to run Vista.

I'm using an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG wireless card (built into the new notebook as standard) to connect to a D-Link 614+ - we all have different gear, I'm still led to believe it's vista disagreeing with WPA1..T.
February 15th, 2007 1:46pm

Vista and WPA1 certainly appears to be the only common factor here. Unfortunately my router has no WPA2 support and I'm not willing to downgrade to WEP simply to use Vista so it looks like I'm stuck with XP until someone can come up with a proper fix.

Hi AllI have had this problem for a while now also. I am running a Toshiba laptop with an Intel 3945ABG in WPA mode under Vista Enterprise. As per a previous response I have tried updating to the latest Intel drivers but still get the the same timeout error message. All works fine in XP and using Vista WEP just not WPA with TKIP.Again as mentioned it fails if i type a random password but times out using the correct one.I've also tried using an RALink2000 equivalent USB adapter with its latest Vista drivers, which shipped with the Ozenda router I have, but again get the timeout error so it seems unlikely to be driver related ???Looks like Vista has some WPA patching due <sigh>

I have a similiar issue - "Wireless authentication failed due to a timeout" when trying to connect to my WPA secured wireless at home using Vista Enterprise (RTM). Annoyingly, a Vista Ultimate (RC2) computer on the same network connects fine. Oddly enough, there are two other wireless networks I connect to on a regular basis using WPA1 without any problems. When I changed encryption from WEP to WPA I was able to get a connection, but as soon as my computer went to sleep I couldn't get to reconnect. I tried installing a later wireless driver, which again let me connect but as soon as my computer awoke from sleep it no longer connected. I tried rebooting my router, my laptop and even deleting the network connection but still no joy. I've tried rolling back the network driver, re-installing the latest network driver but still no joy.
February 23rd, 2007 8:38pm

Well, I'm not sure what has changed, but now I can reliably connect if I turn off the wireless switch on my laptop for a few seconds, then turn it back on again. Odd given previously a reboot wouldn't fix it and I could have sworn I'd tried this. I had previously connected via an ethernet cable to my router so I could at least do some internet work, but apart from that...

ok here is my two cent to make everything cloudy :) there are three networks that i connect to, the home which is a wireless adsl rounter using wep, no problems connecting and staying connected. a friends house which has a wireless access point setup to use wep that has an external adsl rounter. finally uni which i would say has the same type of setting as my friends house except that it has no security. both my friends place and uni i can not connect to, vista see that the network exists but when i try to connect it tells me that is a problem and when i check the event logs the following message appears Detailed root cause: 802.11 connection failed due to status code 1 before going to vista, all three networks worked fine with xp. i read in place to try to disable the ip6v protocol, this had no effect on the problem. any suggestions?

Unfortunately my roommate's laptop, an HP Compaq nc 8430 which has an Intel 3945 a/b/g card, do not want to connect. Both work under XP, but under Vista only mine connects. I am having the same problem connecting via an INTEL 3945AGB and a SIEMENS Router SX541. With no encryption at all it works fine, with WPA, no way ... maybe an observation from my side can help to locate the problem : When I set the laptop (TOSHIBA Satellite) to WPA and plug the machine to the router via wired Ethernet then the WPA connection is established, and when I unplug the cable, the WPA connection remains active as long as the machine runs. After a reboot, again no WPA connection ...! Someone having any idea around this strange behaviour `? Oliver

Neither the 10.6 nor the recently posted 11.1 intel drivers fix this problem but looking at the widespread reporting of this issue, its clearly a Vista network stack bug. Ditto -- new HP Notepad (Intel 3945ABG card) with Vista premium andI am unable to connect via WPA to my ISP'swireless mesh network. If Microsoft and hardware vendors were intending to make this version of Vista more "user-friendly" they missed in a major way and ended up soaking us of $ in the process. There is no easy fix for me without incurring additional costs to address what is clearly a Vista protocol stack issue. Hopefully, some of those high paid Microsoft software designers and managers will read this and get off their keesters to give us a software fix in a future Vista release of software. In the meantime, we'rebetter offto stay on Window's XP whereWPA worked just fine!

Arvo All I've got thesame problems using Vista with wireless WPA, Belkin router, Toshiba A100 2.16 ghz chip etc, specced up nicely thankyou Finding it hard to pin down the problem as I have had the following scenarios: -connection to WEPgood (interesting to see but you can't work securely on this setup) - connection to WPA failing - log points to multicastissue? - this is the most prevelant response -toshiba laptop not even identifying the existence of thewireless network! - laptop connecting successfully to WPA network (pretty random) All these scenarios are running in parallel to an olderDell D400 (running XP) which identifies and connects to same WPA network with few problems (though not 100%) I haven't been fiddling with the router or the settings on the laptops, these are just the things that have occurred over the last week. Yes, just purchased a brand-new Acer including Vista Ultimate and Intel 3945 ABG. After two evenings including upgrading to the newest 11.1.0.86 3945 ABG drivers the conclusion is that Vista Ultimate + Intel 3945 ABG + WPA-PSK does not work. Playing around with my WLAN AP, I experienced exactly the same things as reported in this thread. Only real good discovery is that ... WPA2-PSK (using AES)does work ! Numrous XP computers have absolutelyno trouble connecting to the WLAN AP by WPA-PSKbut I have however noticed difficulties with the Intel WLAN chips before under XP. I agree its a Vista and WPApersonal issue (TKIC). I have Vista Home Premium, running on a Sony Vaio VGCLA2 (desktop based on laptop technology) with an Atheros LANexpress AS IEEE 802.11g PCI-E wireless adapter. Driver is updated to latest. The wireless router is a Philipps SNA6600 with latest firmware. I get an intermittent connection error - wireless drops out after sleep or screen saver with the timeout error if you try to re-connect immediately. It comes back after a while all on its own (meanwhile I havere inserted a cable connection). A laptop running XP connects beautifully with WPA TKIC. The frustrating thing isI can find no settings that seem to allow me to adjust the time of the timeout ! The event log provides no useful pointers. When using the same set up and WEP it worked fine. Conclusion: Vista and WPApersonal seem to be the common cause. Over to Microsoft methinks for a Vista patch.

If you can get into your windows "manage wireless connection" one thing that Drove me nuts was seeing that windows was setting my wpa2 to enterprise wpa2. Id change it and then it would connect but to fix it I had to delete my connection from the list and use the Check for connections icon in the taskbar and run the setup. Now vista says "oh o.k" and lets me connect hassle free. Double check if that will help you.

Same issue here:Machine won't get a DHCP address.Using Intel 3945ABG - WPA2TrendNet TEW-631BRP.I had thought the issue was the router (Netgear) so I switched to trendnet. But, since introducing another machine on the network with the 3945ABG card, whenever another machine with 3945ABG comes out of sleep or hibernate, it never get's an address assignment.

That 1st KB article is for an upgrade of XP to Vista. I don't have an upgrade - I'm clean install on ALL affected machines. The 2nd is waking up from sleep. My issues arise during normal operation. This is an Intel driver issue. It's faulty. From my event log i get 100's of the following errors indicating the device driver crashes and the stack is still trying to resurect it. The NETw4v32.sys is the device driver file from Intel... Like I said try going into manage wireless connections ,clear out the router setting to connect to router if possible, and connect through the windows software(My Pc had a link in the task bar) tell it to search for connections and go through the wizard. I was having problems connecting and that seemed to clear them up. Has anyone tried this other than me ??

I hate to jinx it, but so far so good and when it does drop, not requiring a reboot, just a hard switch off/on of the Wifi http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2259
May 23rd, 2007 2:18am

Cicorias, 11.1.0.100 glad it's working for you, I've installed and I'm now getting a worse connection. Tried rolling back and restoring check points however 'something' has changed and theconnection is alot worse even with the old drivers. O' well I suppose it's good practice putting the vista install disk in the machine, again, again, again.... (if it wasn't for the vista media centre component I'd go back toxp, sigh !) Is the 'hard switch off/on of the wifi' actually on the laptop or on the router ? The reason I ask is the vista event logs are reporting DHCP errors with either timeouts or unable to renew the dhcp lease. Do you use DHCP? If yes doyou fix the mac on the scope ? What is your dhcp lease time ? this is frustrating.......

I use the "hard switch" on the laptop. The reset stuff through Networking center never get's it. In fact, if I start with that then the hard switch won't work either. I do use DHCP. I did lower the roaming agressiveness to it's lowest setting. I have have Multicast Streams and UPnP enabled on the router. I have stepped back to WEP 128 bit mode and may in the future go back to WPA if I'm reasonably stable for the next week or so. DHCP lease time is 24 hours and set to always broadcast. Not clear on what you mean by fix mac on thescope. I'm not restricting based upon mac addresses.

lucky to some i even updated to the latest drivers from Intel all i get not is not time out notice, instead i am getting constant connect and disconnect from the intel card.My router is a Belkin F5D7630A router... there is not much setting in it.Are you using the same router and got it working under WPA personal encryptions?

Well, It's back again for me too. I was able to get connectivity back with a off/on of the hardware WiFi switch a few times, but now required rebooting.Same issue, the NETw4v32 error never stops populating the event log. This driver is ***. I have several machines, Toshiba, Dell that all have the exact same issue on Vista. What poor quality. I was going to try to replace the card with an Atheros card, but on the Toshiba it requires way too much disassembly to get to the mini-pci card.

I have also tried that dirver version and still doing the same, with timeout message and such.I seriously think is the Vista Operating system clashes with the WPA encryption, since WPA is a replace of WEP before WPA2 being develop, my theory is they start to lose out the WPA since WPA2 is completed implemented, so now either intel or Vista not boring fixing this small issue with router only have WPA and WEP encryptions.
May 26th, 2007 7:07pm

I'm running WEP - happens with WPA or WEP. The failure is in NETw4v32.sys which is a device driver from Intel. Chalk it up to bad QA by Intel and bad device driver code. Something Microsoft can't control, but only influence.

May 26th, 2007 8:15pm

yep. 11.1.1.11 also fails although I don't get the netw4v32.sys failures, mine are timeouts through either dhcp or authentications timeouts/issue, or sometimes it just works....... this thread starting on 16 June 06, nearly a year later and still problems. Wonder what the other posters did, new wifi card, new router, used wep, or got a long patch cable ?
May 26th, 2007 9:12pm

I've tried 3 routers: Belkin, Netgear, now TrendNet. I'm running WEP with same issues. If the toshiba wasn't so hard to switch out the mini-pci I'd replace it; I'll be trying that on the dell with an atheros card (Gigabyte). Actually, when it fails, I put in an old Microsoft G PC Card for network access MN-700 I think. It's a pain.

With the latest 11.1.1.100 drivers, I now get a Error 121: "The semaphore timeout period has expired" (ERROR_SEM_TIMEOUT).I've rolled back to the inbox driver that came with Vista RTM. My guess is, those on this thread in the past with no posting of current issues has rolled back to the inbox.
May 28th, 2007 3:25pm

Is anyone using the ProSet software the Intel provides and any luck with it and the latest drivers? I wonder if that's why some folks are no longer reporting issues.Another question, I'm potentially going to replace the 3945abg card, but I started down the path with a Toshiba M5 and it requires quite a bit of disassembly. Any pointers on the level of disassembly?

I'm still having issues. I haven't seen anything in this thread yet that yields a stable WPA setup under Vista. I think many of the people you have not heard from on this thread are simlply enduring flaky wireless connections. Those who disagree with this statement, please post your solutions! I certainly find it odd, with the bad behavior of these drivers that Intel, Microsoft, Dell and other hardware vendors have vague release notes that don't really mentions these common problems. They also aren't doing anything pro-actively to fix these issues or at least they are keeping a very low profile and still failing to solve the issues. As an indication, it's interesting to note how fast the Intel 11.1.1.11 drivers were released after the 11.1.0.100 drivers and they both have serious issues of dropping or disabling the wireless connections and they are no known issues or release notes that address these obvious issues. Grrr! I've had my best luck so far with the Intel 10.6.0.46 drivers. I've tried Dell 11.1.0.86, Intel 11.1.0.100, 11.1.1.11 and other versions. Currently, I'm trying to get the Intel 11.1.1.11 drivers to work reliably. Regardless of WEP or WPA encryption and network A or G and wireless router (netgear or buffalo), I have the same problem that the Internet connection gets turned off. My laptop (Dell Precision Workstation M90 with Intel 3945ABG) has a green light that shows the WiFi is on. When the connection fails after a few hours, or minutes, the green light is off. It is on after rebooting. The adapter shows enabled, but it's quite clear that it has been powered down some how even though I'm on AC power and it's set to stay on. Onceit's off, trying to access the network menu from the network Icon in the system tray takes minutes when it pops right up when the card is on. The serious problem with the Intel 11.1.1.11 drivers is that once the wireless network is turned off by the driver failure, the only I've found to get it turned on again is to restart the computer. Most Unsatisfactory!@ I'm now experimenting with the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power setting. Each test case can take hours since it fails after some minutes to hours and then you have to restart the machine. Otherwise I'd already have results for you! If I can't get the Intel 11.1.1.11 drivers working, I'll go back to the ones I've had the least serious issues with, the Intel 10.6.0.46 drivers. The Intel 10.6.0.46 still have unacceptable bugs, but I can sort of function with them by continuously re-connecting to the network. At least the 10.6.0.46 doesn't require a restart to restore the connection!!! Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Manage network connections Wireless Network Connection > Properties > Power Management Unselect Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

I had the same problem with Windows XP but solved it installing the intel drivers AND connection utility. Now in Vista there isn't a good driver from Intel and I cannot find the custom Intel connection tool, so I can't connect to my router. I don't know if it's a driver issue or a vista fault but I can connect in XP and Ubuntu, but not in Vista.Using a Intel 3495 integrated wireless card (on a Sony Vaio FE31Z laptop) and a 3Com router. My router doesn't support wpa2 so that is not an option.

Helper Class: Layer2 Security Initialize Status: Success Result of diagnosis: Problem found Root cause: Windows cannot connect to "3Com" Wireless authentication failed because of a timeout. Detailed root cause: Layer 2 security key exchange did not generate multicast keys before timeout Repair option: Try connecting to "3Com" again If the problem continues, contact your network administrator or hardware manufacturer for further assistance. Ive no idea how to sort this out, ive phoned 3com, they say the router is Vista compatible. Can anyone help at all? will a new router help? Thanks Guys(Bit embarassing as im an IT tech guy, if im struggling, joe public aint got a hope!!!) it's not really an ideal solution to solve problem to a IT guy like me, but when it comes to desperation, or exhausted out all possibilities then that may be a final solution
June 6th, 2007 1:52am

You know on a side note ive seen in the warm weather is that the intel wireless card in my pc tends to shut down in the heat of the day. It will be running and then all of a sudden loose connection and not find my wireless router. It got annoying enough i had to do wired connection. Ive ended up shutting down the computer and running the fan in my room. Nothing else is effected on pc except the wireless card.so could it be hardware as well giving problems.the main fix for future may be getting an cooler to go under neath my laptop to assist in this matter. The one store i checked had it for $30 US Dollars .

me being an IT guy too, agreed its not ideal. Also as an IT guy you have to know when to give in, way up the cost of fixing a solution with the time spent on problem solving. Learned long ago computers sometimes have wills of thier own. Exhaust all possibilities as soon as possible and move on. Believe me, it keeps you sane. If you spent5weeks trying to solve something that 30 would solve anyway, take te easy life. Its different if you are learning during this time of course, thats called on the job training :-) (thats the only training i get)

Well here is my story. I have a DLink Vonage Wireless Router that of course work fine with XP, I am running WPA PSK. I did an upgrade on my home pc (Dell Dim 9100)to Vista Business. I can not connect to the internet (wired) unless I use a Static IP. The other day I did a clean install on my laptop (Dell Lat E1505) to Vista Ultimate. Well samething, "Local Only" for wired connection ( I cannot use a static, due to connecting at the office also), Unbelievabley I was able to connect via wireless "Local and Internet" however, it was not consistant. I went to Dell's site and installed new drivers for both wired and wireless cards and I have the same issues, I have to reboot inorder to reconnect, even though I did uncheck the power setting, I unchecked IPV6, QOS and Link Layers to both NICS and still the same ***, sometimes after a reboot It will show 1 private network with both a wired and wireless connection, next reboot, wireless only. What the hell is the deal here? Is it Vista? or Drivers? I keep searching and searching and cannot find an answer. I also havemany, many, manyError 5005, NETw4v32 in the system event viewer. -Marc

I am having this issue on an acer with an Atheros ar5005G. Here is what I have posted to Acer (OEM windows - pre-installed rubbish - would rather have had XP) When connecting to a linksys wireless router, the machine will not connect, the acersoftware actually pops up a message saying "internet disconnected" and when you diagnose, it reports as a time out. This fault has occured in the last 2 hours, having previously worked all day, and previously there have been no issues connecting to this router over the last 2 months. The machine will still connect to another network, and other machines can connect to this network. We have re-booted the machine and the router, powered off and on the W-LAN card, we have uninstalled and re-installed the network card. We have also installed a USB wireless card to same effect. I have tried the hotfix posted earlier, and most of the other things suggested here, but to no effect. The laptop was bought just so my partner ould work from home, so it is now pretty redundant. As an aside, anyone know if I use the recovery stuff that we created when we bought the machine, will it lose all our new files. We need this machine online!!

hello thereI had the same problem on 2 wireless devices, and in one days I solved both problems First device is an intel PRO Set 4965AGN with drivers version V11.1.0.86. I got no problem to connect to a network with no encryption and wep encryption. But no way to connect to a wpa encrypted network...So I upgraded to the V11.1.1.11 driver and I got it work Second device is a Realtek RTL8187 usb adapter. At first Vista home premium didn't recognize it, so I have installed a first driver which was a V5.x one. Thus I got the device working with no encryption and wep encrypted networks, but not with a wpa ecrypted network. As there was very few options with this driver, I have installed an newer one (V6.x). And with it, it's working very well whith WPA encrypted network So in my case everything was a driver-based failure...

I'm reading all this trying to find help for our situation, and these symptoms are pretty close. Our newly-unpacked Dell E520 (desktop, not mobile) running Vista HB will connect to our wireless network (WPA2) for a while, then loses connection. Once lost, it will see the network, but not connect unless rebooted. Network card is Belkin F5D7000 ver. 7000, router is US Robotics USR5461. All drivers are the latest available. No connectivity problems with XP and 2000 machines on the same network. We've set global autotuning to disable, no luck.

I have the same issues. I have tried everything that everyone has submitted, but nothing is working. I do get to the point that it asks for my WPA Credentials, but after it goes through that it pretty much either times out or it asks for a Security Key/Passphrase, and this is on WPA-Enterprise. I have an Inte Pro 3945 ABG Network Connection, Vista Home Premium 32 bit. I'm calling toshiba tonight... the Laptop otherwise works great with WEP and I can connect elsewhere. If I find anything else out i'll be sure to post it. thanks for the help though, though here's a though, somene posted to decheck ipv6...how does one do that?

Right well for me (my boss) downloading the following driver: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/T8Clearance.aspx?url=/13001/eng/V11.1.1.0_VT_DRIVERS.ZIP&agr=N&ProductID=2259&DwnldID=13001&lang=eng disabling the power management feature of the adapter and disabling the ipv6 by doing the following: Disabling IPv6 Unlike Windows XP, IPv6 in Windows Vista cannot be uninstalled. To disable IPv6 on a specific connection, you can do the following: In the Network Connections folder, obtain properties of the connection and clear the check box next to the Internet Protocol version 6 (TCP/IPv6) component in the list under This connection uses the following items. This method disables IPv6 on your LAN interfaces and connections, but does not disable IPv6 on tunnel interfaces or the IPv6 loopback interface. (taken from techguys website) this worked on a Portege M400 with a Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG wireless card connected to a 3com Officeconnect 54g wireless router using WPA TKIP encryption. Hope this helps somebody out there
June 13th, 2007 6:26pm

I tried that as well, but I still can't connect. I found out more information about the wireless connection at work, it is WPA off of a radius server and it works just fine for windows xp, but not for vista. in the logs it states that authentication failed. This is what happens when I go through and try to connect, it either asks me for a passphrase/security key, it fails, or it keeps asking for credentials. I have verified my credentials with the supervisor and everything is fine. The only people that are having problems is those with Vista. The latest firmware update that was released by Linksys has been updated on the router, so the blame has shifted again to Vista...which just doesn't seem right for an OS to have problems like that (can understand temp problems, but this looks like an ongoing issue)...anyone else with a suggestion that might help?

Oh....Still no body solve this problem. I think the only solution is waiting for the new patch form Microsoft. p I have the same issues with you~ The wireless in my office is use the WPA+ protected EAP properties (certificate) I use the same way in XP is OK. so~~~I am sure the problem is caused by Vista. Is there somebody who have contact microsoft tech department for this issue?

I have a similar problem to many described here: Vista Premium; 3com wireless 11g OfficeConnect firewall router; Dell XPS M1210 laptop; Intel PRO/Wireless3945ABG.Timeout Error when connecting using WPA-PSKEvent log mentions: "Layer 2 security key exchange did not generate multicast keys before timeout".Have tried most of the solutions suggested here with no joy.One additional clue: I can reliably connect if I hold the laptop near (1-2 ft) from the router. Once established the connection works fine (I am using it now).

Right ok, Having been on an upgrade programme at work to upgrade all our routers (upgraded to netgear dg834g from 3com office connect) I believe that one of the main causes for this problem is the officeconnect router. We had some XP laptops and a dell desktop on XP that were giving us the same error message, once I changed the router all items connected without a single glitch - I genuinely believe the 3com router is a liability and is causing all of your problems
July 6th, 2007 11:12am

It's definitively not a problem only caused by 3Com!I have an SMC Barricade 2804WBRP and I'm not able to connect with my Dell Inspiron (w/ Intel 3945ABG) via a WPA secured connection... I've tried all the hints posted here in this thread and none of them worked.

I just purchased a new Dell Inspiron 1705 with Windows Vista and I have the same issue - not being able to connect to the interent using my Belkin Router Model # F5D8230-4. When I checked out Belkin's website regarding compability of my router with Vista - it indicated that Vista would have the driver required already included. No luck. Spent 2 hours last night with Dell's tech help - they are perplexed.Going to continue working with Dell to see if they can help me. My old XL laptop works just fine! Sigh.

I have a 3Com 3CRWDR100A-72 router and an Intel 4965AGN wifi card.I cannot connect with WPA (v1). The router doesn't have WPA2 capabilities.I tried some of the proposed solutions but none worked. When I came back to WEP it didn't work until I restarted the computer so, perhaps I have to try the proposed solutions and restart the computer each time.It is clear that it is a problem of Vista with WPA (v1). Let's see if MS address this.Petoro

I have had flaky connection issues with Vista with an Intel ABG, Dell 1500 (Pre-N), and Intel AGN (Draft-N) with both a Netgear and Buffalo WAP. I've made some progress though: 1. To connect using WPA2, it didn't like it if I used a word as the password for the WAP. Use 10 numbers (like 1234567891) instead. 2. To fix issues when moving between networks (not getting the new IP), set the DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag to 0 per http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233. Now if only I could stop the intermittent and random disconnects! Adam

hi folks Click on the Start menu and type cmd in the search box. Type CTR+SHIFT+ENTER to tell the command prompt to open with elevated privileges. In the command prompt window, type netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disable and hit Enter then restart the pc. i hope this will solve your problem. If the change doesn't help, you can always revert by going though the same process, but instead, use the command:netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal... source: http://itsvista.com/2007/03/itsvista-tip-47-improve-wireless-connectivity-in-vista/ if it works let me know...

Same problem here. With one exception ...... WPA-PSK on Vistadid actually work for me one time. Then the next day it was the same as everybody else here and I thought I had f*cked something up so I've wasted 2 entire days trying to solve it, which of course did not succeed. I'm the type of guy that helps everybody else with their computer problems and I usually get the job done, but not this time. What got this saga started for me was the fact that I've been using WEP-PSK for the longest time and it has always worked, even on the latest addition, my new Vista Business-preinstalled () laptop. Then one fine day I thought "well, WEP is not that safe so let's do it, let's switch to WPA". I'm glad I found this thread, so I can stop being frustrated and stop having these feelings of Computer-Directed Aggression, I know now that it's just not going to work. My router is an SMC7904WBRA (i.e., no WPA2)and the laptop's wireless is Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG. I've done everything that has been suggested here, the Intel driver is currently 11.1.1.11, I've upgraded the router's firmware to the latest (v0.55), tweaked all the settings I could think of and still no joy. At least I know now that Microsoft is to blame here. If this was the only thing wrong with Vista, I might consider switching back to WEP, but there are a few other things that I'm so annoyed with that I'm going to go back to XP. That has been my intention from the beginning, but I thought Vista deserved a fair chance. Well, it has had just that. Enough! Now I know. As soon as I'm able to make a full backup of this piece of junk, I'm back to installing XP. Good grief!

I have exactly the same problem with a new Sony laptop & a 3Com OfficeConnect 3CRWDR100A-72 router. I have tried all the work-arounds suggested in this thread with no success though, like ed1901, it mysteriously connected once whilst switched to automatic. Sony have been unable to help. I had given up hope and was about to go out and buy a new router when I had one last trawl of this forum and came upon "Vista won't Connect to Internet....". I tried JeffC69's suggestion, following Big Mak's comment re authority - and it worked! It took a couple of attempts to establish the connection initially but now, after several reboots in different locations, it seems to work every time. I shall report again tomorrow to confirm that this isn't just one of those M$ "oddities" but for now, We appear to have a solution! Thanks JeffC69 & Big Mak.

Petoro That's a blow - mine has been OK today, but we'll see what tomorrow brings. If I buy a new router, which I shall probably do anyway, as, because of this problem,I have now promised my (not very) old 3Com to someone else, and I set it up for WPA2, will it be compatible with machines running XP or older systems, whichmay not have a WPA2 capability? If this is a common problem (& 200 posts indicate that it is), then M$ have a real compatability problem which they don't appear to have addressed. Note that these posts go back over a year - to the early Beta days, in fact. Does anyone from M$ ever read these posts?
July 26th, 2007 12:37am

"I shall report again tomorrow to confirm that this isn't just one of those M$ "oddities" but for now," Weprobably donothave a solution! I read Petoro's comments late last night & tried again. Sure enough, as Petoro predicted, I couldn't get a connection. This morning, however, after a sticky start with an initial failure, I am able to connect. I have had several reboots, and the speed of connecting improves with the number of starts. The machine is less than 2m from the router, but this should not make any difference. My conclusions - Vista is not adequately backwards compatible with WPA or WEP (64 or128). This is a major failure on M$'s part. I accept that to make a new OS compatible with millions of items of legacy hardware is unrealistic, but WPA is not a piece of legacy hardware, it is an almost universal system. My actions - accept that, as ever, kicking against the might of M$ is a futile & timewasting exercise, & go out & buy a new router. RB

Solution: I've alsobeen reading these posts due to the same issues with 3Com 100-A with PSK security.... Having spent hours (days!) troubleshooting, I've found that I'm able to connect if the laptop (Dell with Intel wifi) is sat next to the router - then try to force the connection to your SSID, it connects first time, Every time. Also moving the Laptop to a differnet room work stright away however I'm getting messages that suddenly my network key is incorrect (haven't see this problem before). I'm wondering if we have several problems here, one being wifi environment issues and how Vista authenticates to the router. Please can you try this and let me know your outcome?
July 29th, 2007 9:20am

I have never had an issue connecting - but if connected wirelessly the connection drops repeatedly and will only reconnect after system has been rebooted. Error message is Event 5005 NETw4v32. Works fine ONLY if physically connected to router. Other issue in this brand new Dell Vista Business laptop is that it will not let me load Java. Get "Failure Setting File's Time/Date Stamp" & later "Error 1722" message. Tried all fixes as per WWW.Java.com but to no avail. Is there any connection between these two issues? Is my redress against Dell, Microsoft or Intel? Should I be patient or revert to XP? Any help, support or comfort will be much appreciated!

No - I was wrong - I have just lost the connection despite being directly connected to the router (a BT Home Hub) rather than wirelessly. Again all OK on rebooting until the next time. This is very exasperating!
July 29th, 2007 7:43pm

Not hopeful that this will get sorted, but another combination with absolutely no joy.... Samsung R70, intel 3945abg v11.1.1.11, Vista premium Connecting to Belkin F5d7630uk4a with latest firmware Tried the power management option, disabling ipv6, and also on the router changing modes (mixed and g only) all of which make no difference what so ever when connecting using wpa great. guessing by the volume of posts and absolute stoney silence from microsoft, this isn't going to get sorted anytime soon, so its either carry on using a very long cable from work or get a wpa2 router oh, and keep my XP partition so I can use wireless in coffee shops / bars / thousands of other places that run wpa-psk..

<Apologies if this has already been mentioned (there's a lot of posts to look through!), but this link describes our symptoms exactly: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935222/en-us> - Wideboy1 - 31/07/07 Having read the details of this Hotfix, I agree with Wideboy1 that this would appear to be M$'s somewhat grudging acknowledgement that there is a problem. Significantly, the Hotfix is not available as a straightforward download - you have to contact M$ direct to get hold of it (or wait 'til next year for SP1). Not a very satisfactory solution, and their explanation of the problem is (deliberately?) vague. There isno mention, for instance, of incompatability with WEP 64 or 128, nor is WPA2 even mentioned. As I have bitten the bullet and, against my better judgement, bought a new router I have not tried the Hotfix. Has anybody else? Having studied this thread, and similar threads on other forums discussing the same problem (and wasted countless hours), I am now convinced that the problem is purely and simply an encryption system incompatability. Vista is currently designed to connect wirelessly only with WPA2 encryption. It is not an IPv6 problem - if it were, there would also be problems with hard-wired LAN connections (or with encryption disabled), and everyone consistently reports that there are not. Incidentally, closing IPv6 on my machine cut off my expensive bluetooth mouse - not a good long term solution! There are consistent reports of occasional and sporadic connection with WPA, but the connections are not consistent or reliable. I am just grateful that I don't have the problem of one of the posters on another forum who is resposible for a WPA encrypted wireless network at a university with 25,000 staff & students, all logging on with laptops. Most of this year's freshmen will have Vista. Remember, too, that 40% of the PCs currently being sold are laptops, the vast majority of which will have WiFi and Vista. Mr Gates - this is a c*ck-up of major significance - accept the responsibility & get it sorted.

Hi,I have the same problem earlier described in this topic, but I don't get it solved by the hints given. The laptop is an Acer Aspire 9413, with Vista Home Premium running on it, and it has got the Intel Wireless 3945 ABG chipset in it. The modem is a Philips ADSL / PSTN modem/router (provided by Belgacom). When I try to connect to the wireless network (set as WPA with PSK, so personal WPA, with TKIP encryption) it says that it can't connect. However under windows xp there is no problem at all. When I set the encryption to WEP it works though, but WEP is unsecure for years already so this is not an option for me.In the Windows logging I can see (sorry for Dutch, translation to English at bottom) Beveiliging en verificatie Geconfigureerd beveiligingstype: WPA-PSK Geconfigureerd versleutelingstype: TKIP 802.1X-protocol: Nee Sleuteluitwisseling gestart: Ja Unicast-sleutel ontvangen: Ja Multicast-sleutel ontvangen: Nee Aantal ontvangen beveiligingspakketten: 2 Aantal verzonden beveiligingspakketten: 2 Status beveiligingspoging: Mislukt 0x00048005Security and verificationConfigured security type: WPA-PSKConfigured encryption type: TKIP 802.1X-protocol: No Key exchange started: Yes Unicast key received: Yes Multicast key received: No <------ !!!!!!!!!! Received security packets: 2 Sent security packets: 2 Status : Failed 0x00048005 So it seems like there is a problem with the multicast key which is not received? Oh yeah, I tried the latest Intel drivers v11.1.0.1 already, but no effect.Shame that Intel hasn't provided a full Proset wireless client for Vista yet... Thanks for any help. BR, BlackbirdJ71

A computer certificate is configured correctly on the computer. The computer has the correct permissions to access wireless networks."So I thought it only applied to WPA-AES (not WPA-TKIP aka WPA v1 as I use), and I also don't use certificates to authenticate myself in a wireless network (just a preshared key). But that is just my 2 cents of course, let me know your opinion...Thanks & BR,BlackbirdJ71

Hi BlackbirdJ71... yes, I take your point, the wording does suggest that WPA-AES should work. I can only assume that Microsoft has for some reason omitted (or hasn't realised?) the fact that TKIP is also affected.
August 13th, 2007 6:49pm

Hi Wideboy1, You probably mean, the wording does suggest that WPA-TKIP "should" work?Because they say there that they have a bug when u have WPA-AES (WPAv2) in combination with a certificate (= symptons). Or am I really misinterpreting it there??? Please reread the paragraph and tell me if u come to the same conclusion. BR, BlackbirdJ71

I don't know how related this is but it may be the simplist fix that seemd to fix my problem. on my network i had origionaly just wpa2 which runs on aes, and when my brother came home i had to set it to mixed wpa and wpa2 because his older card deos not support wpa2. I did not think at first i had to change my settings on my wireless card back to psk. for a while i smacked my head from connection problems and then i turned to wpa2-psk for my wpa2 connection on vista and vua' la connects like a charm.the deals mixed (wpa and wpa2) runs psk and flat wpa2 runs aes.Just make a mention if this occurs to be the problem. Im sure that because Im on a microsft forum i don't have to give definistion but Im going to put the quote from my dlink modem below."Use WPA or WPA2 mode to achieve a balance of strong security and best compatibility. This mode uses WPA for legacy clients while maintaining higher security with stations that are WPA2 capable. Also the strongest cipher that the client supports will be used. For best security, use WPA2 Only mode. This mode uses AES(CCMP) cipher and legacy stations are not allowed access with WPA security. For maximum compatibility, use WPA Only. This mode uses TKIP cipher. Some gaming and legacy devices work only in this mode."
August 15th, 2007 5:16am

Sorry, BlackbirdJ71... yes I meant "WPA-TKIP 'should' work", in which case, maybe Microsoft just hasn't listed all the various permutations that this problem appears in.

Got it home, installed everything and then tried the wireless LAN card to connect to my Belkin F5D7630 wireless router (which is perfectly OK and working a WPA/PSK password on an XP laptop). Initially it worked OK, but after it Vista updated itself before I could switch auto update off, it rebooted itself and then wasn't able to connect to the WPA/PSK/TKIP wireless router. It was able to connect when I made the router 'open access' and it works fine when I make the router WEP, BUT IS DOESN'T want to know about WPA!!!!!! It just says authentication time out error and I end up going round in circles trying everything I know but without success. Samsung suggested a) returning the laptop back to 'as shop bought' mode using their inbuilt recovery software, didn't work b) using a microsoft KB article to fettle the Registry!!!! no less, didn't work c) trying a hotfix patch from Micosoft, didn't work d) RE-INSTALLING Vista from the recovery CD having formatted the drive (remember this is just out of the shop!), didn't work..................so eventually I have sent them it back to the workshop and they have currently suggested it needs a new wireless LAN card????????????? I hope they haven't just assumed it is faulty without tetsing it, or that they make sure the replace it with a different make, as otherwise I can't see why I won't have the same problem. To me, it feels like a Vista glitchbecause for an amateur I have tried some pretty hard core telephone advice so far...................I seem unable to get any more of a Firmware update for my router, but when I rang Belkin they were ultra confident their product wasn't the problem. The wireless car is given as an Atherus brand, can't remember the model number, butI don't see how hardware can be faulty when it connects in 'open' and 'WEP' modes but not WPA???????? Unless it is the driver for the LAN card at fault, but I don't see a more recent driver for it and Samsung haven't sent or suggested I need one. Anyone taking bets on Vista? or will Samsungactually solve the problem?

Guess what? Laptop back, supposedly a new wireless card, but same old problem. I strongly believe this is Vista related and however much I am getting told to get a new router, update the un-updateable firmwares and drivers (the hardware companies don't have updates as they say I'm up to date and they are Vista compatible!) I am looking at installing XP even though I bought this laptop in good faith with Vista pre-installed. Scandalous. Belkin have tried to help, Samsung have tried to help, but what can they do against a very poor OP and Microsofts insistance that bugs happen, we can't test them all? Well, Microsoft, I wish I could only pay you 20 for your rubbish and tell you that I can't pay you full price for 1/2 tested software............... If anyone out there has a solution other than those already posted, I'd love to hear it.

what i did to solve this incompatibilty betw vista and XP: 1. i change my router settings to WEP-shared 2. use a passpphrase instead of using the default(it has to be 5 ASCII or 13 depending on the key encryption) 3.apply the same settings on the XP which is quite easy 4.on VIsta you have to choose no authentication to be able to have the option WEP(or else you wont have it) and enter the same passphrase as on the router 5. make sure you have DCHP enableon the router and you have enough IP @ 6. applly DCHP on the vista and XP machine hope that i did help thanks! and enjoy Vista

Well, this solution worked for me. Thanks, Heggie. This was driving me crazy finding out theres 150 other folks with the same problem was a mixed blessing. Its User Communities like this one that prevent me from turning back to a Stone Tablet with a Chisel. Thank you all for your input. Lar P.S. After two weeks with my new HP laptop, I hate Vista. I know Microsoft wanted an operating system that even blithering idiots could use so now Vista helps me at all sorts of things where I do not need nor want help, and such help has cut my productivity to a quarter of what it was under XP. I really think that Vista should come with an installation option which asks: Are you absolutely and incorrigibly ignorant when it comes to computing? Yes or No? If you answer yes, it should install Vista. If you answer no, it should install XP.
November 23rd, 2007 12:29am

Thanks for the extra help about WEP, but the thing is I didn't have a problem connecting with WEP using Vista, it is a problem to connect with WPA..........which as I understand it from manufacturers advice inc Microsoft is the prefered encryption security above that of WEP.........so obviously I and many others want Vista to connect with WPA enabled.....which it doesn't do 100% all the time on every machine, whether this is an issue to do with Vista installation or router firmware compatibility or just a bug in the WPA communications.........I don't know, but so far nobody has resolved it for me, and the nice Samsung Techie bloke siad the XP option was one that most people were taking.... My solution was to take the brand new laptop, purchased with Vista (at a cost) andtrash it in favour of XP Professional. It now works a treat connecting with WPA. This isn't the thread to discuss why Vista? But so far I fail to see why XP is being binned as an OS when it clearly is now Microsofts premium bug freeish offering....its purely a commercial decision to force the sales over again to a new OS.

Well after reading the posts going back over ONE YEAR to the BETA days, for the same Fing issue I am having makes those New Apple VS Vista Commericals more believable, and very accurate:-) Anyway needless to say I am running Vista 64 ultimate, using an ASUS M2n32-Sli Wireless MB, (Realtek AP Solo Wireless Chip), and Sure enough the ONLY way I can connect is with WPA off! I WILL NOT run WEP, it is a Joke for security and I have to much to lose if Hacked. You would Think By Now MS would have some sort of fix, for such a SERIOUS Problem! Will keeep checking back, and crossing fingers while I use my standard Cat5 Connection ;-( Thanks

I bought a new vista-notebook last week with an Intel 3945 wireless card and had the same problem with a Zyxel router with WPA TKIP encryption. It worked with a Netgear Router, but not with the Zyxel. I always got the timeout from multicast like described before. I could solve the problem by installing the XP driver from Intel: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=N&Inst=Yes&ProductID=2259&DwnldID=13000&strOSs=44&OSFullName=Windows* XP Professional&lang=eng Hope, it stays solved... ...just for one day. Now Vista has problems with the driver...???

Same problem here with an Asus F3Svlaptop connecting via a 4965agn intel chipto a 3com OfficeConnectrouter with WPA/TKIP. Router works fine with 4 other wireless devices, just not with Vista yet. Intel now have a version 11.5.0.32 driver version available for my version of Vistabut this hasn't worked either. Oddly, I also initially experienced two successful connections (when I wasn't trying to make it work) but since then it's not worked at all.

Hi , Just as a mention ive had almost perfect connection on wpa2-psk running 802.11n on my schools wireless internet. The description of my card just says "11a/b/g/n/ wireless lan mini-PCI Express Adapter"(and as far as i know its draft 2.0) with an atheros driver version 7.3.1.42 with driver date 6/18/2007.Vista doesnt reconize 802.11 n and "N" but it deos connect nicely. I dont know how much help this is but I thought Id let you know its been working with the above settings.

WPA2 works mainly fine as well as WEP. The biggest problem is still to connect via WPA.My router (D-Link DI-514, also tested on DI-524) connects when I change the settings of my wireless connection from WEP to WPA and let's me work normally but after shutting down and turning on again it doesn't work anymore. There must be some hope still left we'll get this *** finally working someday.
December 7th, 2007 5:28pm

Finally I solved it. I have D-link DIR-655 router that is connected via LAN to my Vista 64bit computer. The wireless computer use d-link DWA-547 on a XP 32bit computer. From start it only worked with WEP or no security. I tried both WPA and WPA 2 and it did not work. But that was when WPA2 tried to use Cipher TypeTKIP. When I swithced to AES I got full speed. Hop this helps some of you!

Hi have the same problem. Vista does not connect to WPA. My XP machine works fine. I am just not willing to downgrade to WEP or unsecure connection. Can not believe that Microsoft still has not fixed the problem. I use the following workaround: I boot the Laptop like 2 inches / 5 cm away from the router. Then Vista connects. As soon as it is connected I can take away the laptop from the router and it mainly stays connected. Not exactly high-tec but at least I have a secure wireless connection.
December 17th, 2007 7:36pm

Yep, same problem here. Dell Inspiron with Intel wireless 3Com OfficeConnect wireless. This has to be a power issue / authentication, if I can not connect in the same room as the router it's self. I too can connect either standing 2 ins aways from the router or in the next room. This is plain madness.... This forum's been going for nearly a year now with no resolution. Not evan RC1 of SP1 Vista resolves half the problems that I had....

After much googling for this issue, this thread seemed to be the only useful place out there (even if there aren't too many answers! ). I've finally got my 3com router connecting to my intel wireless card (inside a Toshiba laptop). I upgraded both the wireless card driver (didn't seem to do anything), but also the firmware for the 3com router. Everything's working fantastic now. Maybe worth a try to others in the same situation?

Ok, so my last post may be a bit of a red herring! I just uninstalled the trial version of Norton on this computer and now I'm back to square one with trying to get it connected tothe 3com router with WPA!! The weird thing is, that before the uninstall of Norton I rebooted/turned off the laptop numerous times to check it wasn't just some fluke, it's just that after the uninstall of Norton /bang/ it didn't work anymore. I've given up now, and downgraded my router to WEP 128bit, everything seems to be working fine in this mode - although I do worry about the decreased security...

Hi all,I have an Acer Aspire 5315 with an Atheros wireless card that I want to connect to a SMC access point.I also have problems when using WPA2 and AES, but everything works fine when the Laptop power cable is connected. This is very strange, if I remove the power cable the laptop is unable to connect to the access point.I already saw the power management stuff, changed settings so the wireless card isn't turned off to save power, but it stills not working.Does anyone else has this particular problem? Any solution? Thanks.

Hi everyone, I have beencoping withthe same problem for a while now. However lately I have noticed that if I connect the laptop with cable to my router, the computer picks up the wireless signal after a while (3-4 mins). And after that point even if I disconnect the cable I can get my Vista laptop to talk WPA to my ADSL router without a problem. I am curious if this is the case for other people here in this thread as well. Regards.

I got exactly the same problem, I have a Belkin N wireless router hook up with cable to my desptop with XP windows without problems. My laptop (with Vista)can dectect my router, but can only connect with NO security password set.I have try to set WEP, WPA, WPA2, my laptop can still dectect the router, but it just can't connect. I try to download the vista patches that you guys list, but still can't connect. What can I do now? The thing I can think of is either connect without a security password (which I think is quite dangerous), or change my newly bought laptop operating system back to XP....=(

Just out of curiosity are all your pcs vista and do they support all wpa2. I had the nightmare when my service provider said to run thier wireless modems and turn off my draft n router to test if it was them or me. The modem ran wpa and g. the range sucked and had comunication problems to my vista pc. As soon as they found it on them i put back on wpa/wpa2 (though if you have an n router and all people are capale of wpa2 they should since im using wpa on some my N connection sits at 54 mbs due to a sibling that refuses to be wpa2 capable)forget this thing called wpa1 . Crawl under your associates desk and set them up for wpa2. As soon as my sibling leaves im going back to full wpa2 support.Coolbiker

after hrs and hrs and trying everything on this forum and more, wpa-psk (wpa-personal) aes with passphrase as network security key worked for me. make sure under "managewireless connections" and "profile types" choose "use all-user profiles only (recommended)". when you double click and are on properties tabs - under "connection" choose both "connect even if the network is not broadcasting" and"connect automatically when this network is in range". With this even though under "connect to a network" it says "the settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network" under "network and sharing center" it shows the computer connected to the access point/router and the internet. i went to a few sites and made sure the lan cable was not plugged in and it worked. thanks to all for help. i have the patch installed, every setting recommended here set up, plus what you see above. i have an on-q home wireless access point system with motorola wa840g equipment. the network always has worked with simple settings with 2 other windowsxp laptops. now the new hp pavillion windows vista finally is working too.

I have the same problem as everyone else here. I have a D-Link Extreme N (Dir 655) Router... I have my PS3, PC, PSP, & Laptop all connected to the network...The PSP and Laptop are both wireless...my laptop is running vista with a Marvell Topdog Wireless N card built into the laptop. I am right now just using MAC address filtering and not broadcasting my SSID because like everyone else WPA with TKIP doesn't work properly. It connects when I first open my laptop and from there it seems like every 5-15 minutes it jumps in and out of connection. I have tried everything I know plus talked to my IT guy at work and hes given me a few ideas but nothing has helped. It has to be something with the laptop and router not communicating because I can use WPA TKIP & my SSID set to invisible and the PSP connects and runs without interuption. Hopefully a fix or something comes because I don't want to use WEP which doesn't support wireless N only G and lower. If anyone finds anything please help us all. Thanks

Thought I'd add my voice to the chorus. Vista withToshiba P205-S7806 with Atheros AR5007EG drivers7.4.2.15. No SSID, no connection. Yes, I checked the "connect even if not broadcasting ssid" thing. Yes, I've been able to connect to it randomly - and why it decides if it is going to connect or not is anyone's guess. Don't get me started on why myvpn doesn't work on the wireless when it finally decides to connect either. This is stupid. A brand new vista ultimate setup, a brand new laptop and I can't connect to a stupid wireless router. Thanks alot vista.Every other lappy I've had works fine. This most definitely issome kind of vista stupidity. Where's XP's "repair" option in vistato give the stupid wireless a swift kick in the jimmy? At least if xp got confused I could get it to restart the wireless stuff and try to reconnect.

I have solved my issue with connecting via Vista using encryption: I had a router from Sky Broadband which I reflashed to allow me to reconfigure it. Once I reconfigured it to pick my tiscali settings, I set the security to WPS-PSK which never worked on my Belkin router. I then connected the router up and then attempted the wireless connect from the vista laptop. I was prompted for the passphrase which it accepted eventually, and low and behold a 10 month problem was resolved. I then connected my xp laptop to the router and that worked. The only thing I can think of is that Belkin (my old router) was not tested against Vista. The old sky router is netgear which works finenow. The link to reconf the router is http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/65319/but install the latest firmware not the one mentioned. Think it is 1.02.13 now Anyone with a netgear who has admin rights probably just needs to download the firmware, but not sure what to suggest with problem belkins other than get rid of it and get a netgear which seems to have been tested with Vista

Hi, I have just manged to get my Vista Fujitsu-Siemens Esprimo Mobile laptop (Wireless adapter appears to be Atheros AR5007EG as per Device Manager) to my 3COM router 3CRWDR100A-72 using WPA-PSK and TKIP. The story so far: I received a brand new laptop with VistaHome Premium pre-installed. During the initial start-up of Vista I have pulled the power cord incidently without noticing, so the laptop battery has run flat. This has corrupted my Vista setup and I had to go through the painful proccess of using recovery DVD and searching for drivers. Apparently the Vista wireless driver worked after a few unsuccessful connection attempts (timeout). This has allowed me to use Windows Update and there was about a few dozens "hotfixes". Well it has stopped working after this. After repeating the painfull process of recovery and Windows Update I have got the same result. Being fed up with this Idecided toget rid of Vista alltogether and install Win XP. Before doing this I connected my laptop using Ethernet to download XP drivers from the Fujitsu-Siemens website. After downloading the Wireless Network Adapter driver I decided to give it a try before wiping Vista out. I manually selected the downloaded driver .inf file and IT WORKED! Straight away! I could not believe it! I rebooted the laptop to make sure the settings stay and it still works OK! The driver details for the Wireless Lan Adapter are as below. Driver Provider: Atheros Driver date: 21/06/2007 Driver version: 5.3.0.56 All the protocol settings in the network connection properties (IPv4, IPv6, etc..) are enabled. Well, maybe I will keep Vista on my laptop for a while ----------------------------- I have just found out that the bloody thing connects wirelessly only when a normalEthernet connection is present. After this I can unplug the cable and continue using wireless. What a pain in theneck your latest product is, Mr. Gates and Mr. Balmer! Bye-bye Vista, Hello XP!

Dear All, I spent about 5-6 hours solving this exact problem. Bought a new HP laptop ( with intel wireless card Intel PRO/Wireless 4965AGN (Draft-N) ) and started to getting "unable to connect due to a timeout" error. I have belkin n router. The solution turned out to be rather simple. Obtain latest driver from intel site ( for my case it was dated 3/13/08) and obtain latest firmware from your router's site. And I was ok after the I completed the two steps.. It seems main problem here is with router as I was experiencing the problem till I had not updated. BTW, my laptop already had Vistahome premium SP1 installed. Hope it helps somebody...

I've run into the WPA-PSK AES "no connect with Vista" issues several times. After my (live-in) girlfriend came home with a new laptop running Vista I finally had to sit down and figure out what was going on.I'm Running a Buffalo Air Station WHR-G54S wireless router. Vista's event log showed the classic "no response received from network device". I had a feeling that maybe the router wasn't sending something Vista would interpret. I removed all authentication and encryption but Vista still wouldn't connect. OK, I knew something was fishy with the router at this point. Like many wireless router manufacturers, Buffalo has it's own proprietary "turbo" mode that doubles throughput. The catch is that you have to use all Buffalo wifi devices at all points for it to work. Enabling Turbo worked with XP laptops because the router would just default to standard 802.11B/G. I suspected this isn't happening with Vista. I disabled the Turbo option so it can only run in B/G mode. WPA-PSK AES now works perfectly on Vista.Out of the box, I hooked up with a hard line and had her laptop do an automatic update. I saw 16 items get installed, including some KB items. I have no idea if that helped. My suggestion is that everyone take a look at their broadcast settings to make sure it's as close to bare standard B/G/N as possible. Start at the bottom with no encryption/authentication and 802.11B and work your way up.
July 26th, 2008 5:43am

The problem is NOT with Vista. You will not be seeing a patch from Vista for a problem is NOT there. Here's the fix and it is so very simple. It's the ROUTER which must be edited/re-configured. Go to your router home page click on edit wireless settings. That will take you to 'Configure the wireless settings'...go to wireless security then Authentication click on the drop down box then click WPA-PSK and WPA2-PSK next leave default encryption key...that key will be AES. Then go to the bottom and click on SAVE. That will change the security setting for the wireless connection. Now the wireless connection will not connect until you change the authentication in Vista. Right click on the connection and change it from WEP to WPA2 then re-enter you passphrase.

Dear Ella, Reading all messages it is clear to me that the problem can be fixed when using WPA2 or WPA-AES. Unfortunately I have a SMC Router (SMC7904WBRA), and SMC has not released a new driver. This SMC Router can only use WEP or WPA-TKIP security. I can only connect to the Router when my laptop is just 1 inch away from the Router and after trying several times to connect. Once connected, it all works fine. If this is not a Vista problem, how can I solve this one ?? Thanks in advance, Ernst Jan

ellla wrote: The problem is NOT with Vista. If the problem isn't with VISTA, how do you explain that I never had problems until switching to VISTA. I have a Nintendo Wii, a PSP, and my Laptop w/VISTA that are all connected wirelessly. Before I had my latop w/vista I had a laptop w/XP. And I had the same setup. The Wii, PSP, and XP laptop all worked perfectly. No stability problems. I then bought a new laptop that came with VISTA...Same wireless setup as before and now I have stability problems, but only with the laptop, not the wii, or psp. I did change my wireless settings from TKIP to AES about 4 months ago and it did help quite a bit. The laptop still has stability problems, but is muchimproved. The Wii & PSP are great (same as before). I havea D-Link Dir-655 wireless N router. My laptop has wireless N as well. Anyway the router I have is one of the better routers on the market and puts out an even better signal than the G routers. Soin my opinion, everything still points to VISTA. If you see something I am missing or think I should try, please let me know. Thanks again.

IMO, it has to do with the router. Let me say my wireless connection always worked fine on Vistaexcept the security was WEP. I read every post on this site and everyone had me convinced it was Vista. I tried all the suggestions. None of them work. Then I decided to try the router home page and change those settings as I stated above. My wireless works fine with the WPA2-PSK - AES.I can also use any of the other WPA settings since my router was changed. The one I can't use now is WEP unless I change my setting at my router home page. I'm not sure why others are having problems, I'm not. The wireless connection on my laptop with Vista works just fine and I'm secured up, finally. I wish I could help those continuing to have problems but IMPO I'll be very surprised if Vista ever has a patch for a problem that I do not believe exists. Look elsewhere.... One last note, if the connection is weak diagnose it send the report to Microsoft and allow Microsoft to repair it. When I have a limited connection...Microsoft/Vista corrects it quickly. Through this, one may fine a solution.

Mine on vista works fine for the most after a restart but if the routers turned off while I'm on, it almost never reconnects. It's saying when this occurs that the pasword and security setting are not correct but I have 2 other computers running wirelessly that are xp sp2 and they don't have this problem. I've ended up using a cable mostly all summer due to this problem. This makes my head hurt.

My daughter has to do exactly the same at her university house, sharing with 3 other XP users, with NO problems. Why is Vista so badly written that the previous day you use an XP machine NO problems, change machine to a Vista model, NO wirelessinternet access. Try explaining that down the phone without a Vista machine with you to try and sort the problem remotely. Microsoft do not do enough checking before releasing software, if Vista is supposed to make things easier, well words fail me,surely things should get better NOT worse!!!!

Greetings- Just wanted to thank everyone for their posts. I ran into this issue, and if it was not for your helpful posts, it would have taken me a long time to figure this issue out. I am using an actiontec wireless router. It is the newest model that Verizon issues with the Fios service, which btw rocks in my opinion. On my router, I used wpa with tkip encryption. I set it to 802.11g which has more bandwidth. The router has mac authentication. I am happy with the router, the url for the drivers is updated on Intel site. I believe the version is 12.? ie. I am not sure of the entire verison number. But it works. I installed it. The software comes with a troubleshooter that when you run it, it tells you exactly what is failing. For example, my driver was using AES when I installed it. And I could not authenticate with my router. But after I ran the troubleshooter provided by intel for the PRO/Wireless 3945ABG network card, it told me that authentication was the issue, and I was able to compare settings between my wireless card, and my router, and realize that it was the authentication protocol I was using. Thank you all. I hope you figure out you issue. I hope this post helps the next person.Regards-Darvish

SUDDENLY IT WORKS! The trouble is, I don't know what made the difference. I have been wrestling with this for four days and tried as many of the above things as I felt competent to attempt. Today, I tried to install a 3com wireless adapter that I had from a previous machinethat hadno wireless card in it (I boughtthe adapterwith the 3com router). This didn't seem to work so I gave up. Now suddenlythe internal wirelessdoes work. OK, now what else is different that could possibly be contributing? 1. I am not plugged into the LAN 2. I am three rooms away from the router 3. I have just re-awakened the laptop from sleep mode (lid closed) Other than that, I am lost to explain what has happened. Relief tinged with nerves that this might be temporary. BTW my set up is Toshiba Tecra M9 running vista- 3com router. Good luck!

Ok, an update to the last message. Two weeks on and the wireless connection routinely fails when I am in the same room as the router or in the room below it but it routinely works when I am three rooms away. So now I work by the fire in the living room (could be worse). Could this be a matter of signal strength? Does anyone with technical knowledge know? Does anyone at Microsoft really care? Is anyone at 3com at all interested?

Obviously not! However, the connection timeout is almost certainly caused by the signal from the router being too strong. If I keep my distance, that gives it time to log on successfully. Also, I have had no problems with numerous other wireless networks I have encountered in hotels and public spaces, so it is not a hardware issue.

I am having same issue at home. I just got a Dell Vostro a860 with Atheros Ar5007eg wireless card running Vista Business. My access point is a Gigabyte AircruiserG GN_apo1g. I got the access point and set it up at work where it all worked fine. I brought it all home and it connected fine. I started having some issues so disconnected and tried to reconnect but keep getting the error "The wireless network key is incorrect" Layer 2 security key exchange using user-supplied key did not generate unicast keys before timeout. I then took both back to my work place without changing anything and it connected. Take it back home and same error. I have done firmware on access point and done all updates on Vista.I can connect using a mobile phone with wireless at home but still the laptop refuses. I have tried different ip ranges and all channel for wireless and I am about to smash both devices into little pieces. Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. I have also tried most suggestions on this site. Only thing that is working at home is unsecured and thats not going to happen.

Thanks to some other posts here I seem to have solved issue. Plugging the laptop in worked and it connected so I changed the settings in my power options for running on battery. I set for wireless card from medium power saving to maximum performance and it connects no problem. Hope this helps someone.

Hey thanks so much for your post. I am on a Dell latitude D630 with the same adapter as you. I followed your advice and went straight to the Intel site, grabbed the latest Proset/Drivers and it worked right away! awesome... thanks!!

The initial problem was vista machines not being able to connect to wep or wpa connections, usually giving an error that the settings on the pc don't match the network settings. Easy fix, click diagnose, it shows that the settings needed to be changed to match the network, thenit brings youto a box to change the settings, change the settings to match (it will show you)you arenow able to connect toyour wep/wpaencrypted wireless network. Hope that helps.

Wow - this problem is 3 years down the track - anyone find any solutions yet? or just buy new gear and give up ? I have the same problem by the way. Wish it was simpler then this. Ausus Atheros Belkin surf Works with WEP

I have found a very simple solution to this problem. I was not able to connect to my netgear wn2000rpt range extender or my verizon Hotspot. Amazingly I installed Windows 7 and it corrected both of these problems. The problem is a Windows Vista issue. Upgrading to windows 7 will definitely solve this problem and many other problems you might be having with Vista.
