Unable to connect computer to a networked Hard Disk
I have a Western Digital World Book Edition Networked hard disk that I can connect to from all the PC's at home. But when I bring home my work Laptop I can see the device but I am unable to login to it. I know the username and password is right but I am just given an error message. I'm assuming that this is some kind of security setting that is applied via Group Policy onto this computer but I was wondering if anyone knew what specifically it coulld be. I'm a sys admin at the company but I am only new and am unsure what setting out of the thousands that it could be stopping this from happening. Any help would be greatly apprecaited

Your homework is a workgroup one? Your notebook is a member of another entity and the user credentials differ. Have you tried something like my_home_grp\user_name (User_name alone in considered local ...) ? Regards Milos

What error are you receiving? Maybe the work computer is having a stored credential which is causing this error. Go to Control Panel -> Credential Manager and have a look.Blog: www.danielclasson.com/blog | LinkedIn: Daniel Classon | Twitter: @danielclasson

Hi Milos, sorry for the delay in reply I didn't realise that I had to actually set up notifications. Anyway, yes my home network is a Workgroup one and my work notebook is part of a domain. Yep I have tried using username backupdevice\martin with the password I have set and I know the password is correct but this did not work.

Hi Daniel, Sorry for the late reply, I hadn't setup notifications. Unfortunately there is nothing in credential manager. I will get the exact error message tonight and post it.

Hi Guys, The error message I get when trying to connect to the drive is "The mapped network drive could not be created because the following error has occured: The specified server cannot perform the requested option" This is a pretty generic message but I hope it helps.

I have worked out what the problem was. It was a couple of Group Policy settings that were applied. For anyone else who has this problem, have a look for: Computer Configuration -> Policies -> Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Local Policies -> Security Options Microsoft Network Client: Send Unencrypted Password to Third-Party SMB Servers - Enable Microsoft Network Client: Digitally Sign Communications (Always) - Disable
