Unable to complete FPSMC installation on Server 2012 R2

Hi everyone.

Facing an extremely annoying challenge - getting FPSMC installed! ;) During the installation, it requests both .Net 3.5 and Microsoft Chart Controls for Microsoft .Net 3.5 to be installed. I have done this, along with all available IIS components; even trying a manual installation of SQL 2008 Express - still no change.

Things I have tried: 1) manually installing IIS components and 2) re-downloading the installer.

The installer gets to the point of advising on missing components (Yes/No) - clicking Yes momentarily makes the progress bar run, but then it returns to the Express/Enterprise selection window again - looping whatever option you choose.

Please help!

Regards, Chris

Hi,

>>During the installation, it requests both .Net 3.5 and Microsoft Chart Controls for Microsoft .Net 3.5 to be installed.

It needs .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 or later framework and Microsoft Chart Controls for .NET 3.5 SP1.

>>The installer gets to the point of advising on missing components (Yes/No) - clicking Yes momentarily makes the progress bar run, but then it returns to the Express/Enterprise selection window again - looping whatever option you choose

So there is no error during installation? Have you checked Application log?

Joyce

Hi Joyce - thanks for the reply.

According to the server's registry, the following are installed:

1) .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 - via Server Manager Roles and Features (3.5.30729.4926 in registry)

2) Microsoft Chart Controls for .NET 3.5 - downloaded from MS (3.5.0.0 in registry)

No, no errors during the installation; the process simply advises on missing components ("Microsoft Optional Components" and "SQL Server 2008 Express"), allows you to click on the 'Yes' option for installing these, then loops back to the Express or Enterprise installation type. No errors in the Windows Application Logs -only informational on the installation starting.

Chris

Hi Joyce

Further to my initial reply, I have now attempted to install each component individually by using the files extracted during the FPSMC.msi installer. The process used:

1) Enable all functions of the .NET Framework 3.5 through Server Manager - SUCCESSFUL;

2) Install Microsoft Chart Controls for .NET Framework 3.5 - SUCCESSFUL;

3) Install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express (included in the FPSMC.msi installer; extracted during MSI install) - this indicates known issues with Server 2012 R2. I progress the install despite this warning which installs all required SQL 2008 Express components. All functions ticked and installed - SUCCESSFUL (errors);

4) Install FPSMC using the MSI installer - this leads to the same issue (Install required components (Microsoft Windows Optional Components) - endless loop) - FAILED;

5) Install FPSMC.exe (included in the FPSMC.msi installer; extracted during MSI install) which takes you directly to the EULA. This fails with "Cannot connect to IIS";

6) Enable Web Server (IIS) through Server Manager - no additional components selected - SUCCESSFUL;

7) Repeat step 4 above - FAILED;

8) Repeat step 5 above - FAILED;

9) Enable all non-standard Web Server (IIS) functions and also all non-standard .NET Framework 3.5 & 4.5 functions through Server Manager - SUCCESSFUL;

10) Repeat step 4 above - FAILED;

11) Repeat step 5 above - this fails with "A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected..." - FAILED.

I'd be keen to understand what other components should also be installed so this can be drafted into a deployment plan.

Thanks!

Hi Joyce

I've already tried to install all possible IIS6 and IIS7 (or later) components manually, confirming these are successfully installed by checking the relevant registry key. I'd imagine this issue is due to Windows Server 2012 R2 incompatibility, as I've stepped back to Server 2008 R2 (the previous OS supported in our organization) and PSMC installs without issues on this (with the relevant dependancies installed, of course).

Can you confirm whether FPSMC 2010 is compatibile with Windows Server 2012 R2?

Chris

Hi,

The official document just tell us the minium system requirements. We can assume the FPSMC is incompatible with Windows Server 2012 R2 after we tried every method we can found.

Hi,

I'm about to install FPSMC on Windows 2012.  Does anyone know an official statement that it's not compatible? Does someone out there able to make it work?

May 6th, 2015 8:11pm

Hi Joyce (or any Microsoft support team here),

Can you or someone please help me find an official document that FPSMC is not supported in Windows 2012 R2? Because I just tried to install it and I experience the same as the original poster.

Like mentioned here, I only see the minimum system requirements for FPSMC in its official documentation.  I wish someone would officially say that it is not supported in Windows 2012 R2.

Anyone? I need somewhat an official note so I can tell my bosses.

Thanks!

I talked to Microsoft support and the official word to this is that, it is not supported because the End of Life Cycle for this product is December 2015.

"The product and its last update FPSMC Hotfix Rollup 1 - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2717781 was released before Windows Server 2012 R2 was available.  Due to this it was never tested for compatibility, so it is not a supported scenario.  The Hotfix Rollup 1 is the last update for this product and there will be no more updates with this product facing End of Life at the end of the year."

At least I got something official from Microsoft.  Thank you.
