Hi all, In my home network I use 2 network drives to store my data. On these drives are shared folders to sort my data on subject. For example: \\MDRX002\Data of \\MDRX002\Music, if I use a link like I typed here before everything works fine. But when I only type \\MDRX002\ to look at the shared folders I get an error. On my Windows XP environment I can look at this root without a problem.. Did I make a mistake in configuring Windows 7 or is this function removed in this version. I am currently running on the RC of Windows 7. This is the error message I get: \\MDRX002 is not accesible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Network error (1208). Like I already said, the permissions should'nt be the problem because on Windows XP (and Vista to by the way) it works just fine. Edit: Just after typing this I managed to access \\MDRX002\ and look at the shared folders but when I tryed it again I got the same error again. The disk was idle at the moment of trying. I hope someone can help because this is holding me from totaly using Windows 7. Regards, Marvin

What a bugger was working fine in Beta, hmm i wonder what changed in RC

I have an update for this problem, not a good update because the problem only seems to be worse. When i play a playlist of music from the network drive's music folder \\MDRX002\Music at the start of every next song it plays 2 seconds then halts for 3 seconds and continue to play. This only occurs once per song but is very anoying... I hope microsoft will come up with a resolution because I've sended this issue already when I used the beta but I can't find a submit button is the RC... Regards, Marvin

I had the same problem, I think. I ranted in the security forum if you wish to read about my problems. Since installing Win7 RC any folders on network drives which were previously shared now require administrator privileges for full access. What I did to fix this was: 1. Take ownership of all folders and files on the shared drive and then give my user read/write access. 2. Then I went to the sharing options for each folder and removed any unknown contacts, and then re-shared the folder giving access to "everyone". Seems to be working fine now.

Hey Stickywulf, Thanks for your reply but this isn't the problmen. The sharing of the folders is being done bij the SMB server wich is installed in the firmware of the network drives. Even if this is going wrong I still should be able to acces the network drives root folder wich contains all these shared folders. Like said, older versions of windows don't have problems wich it either. regards, Marvin

Nobody who can help me? :( This problem realy prevents me form deploying Windows 7 to my other machines beside my testing-box.

I just (finally!) installed Win7RC and am having the same problem. It worked fine under XP; I didn't even need to do the "Share files and printers" rubbish, it just worked. I can access my NAS through the web interface for setup, etc., but cannot access it via 'Network'. Very annoying :(

Windows 7 is not Windows XP. Now that we got that out of the way. Can you map a network drive to your NAS?

I can indeed map a network drive to my NAS, but only to the shares located on it like I said before. And I am not planing to make 20 mapped drives, I just want to be able to access the root and open the share I need at that moment.

I just ran into the same problem, not being able to share the root of a hard drive, but now I'm using a work around. In the root directory of the drive, I just created a new folder, and moved everything else into this new folder, and then share it. This way, Windows 7 sees it as a normal folder to share instead of the root of a drive.

That's not a solution I think, but realy a work arround. Shared folders realy are useless then because you have to put everything in a single one.

I have the same problem, with XP en Vista everything works fine !!!?? I think i have found the problem, right click on computer, advanced system settings,choose Tab Computer Name,then Network ID, what i see is that the option This computer is a part of a business network is enabled. So i choose the option This is a home computer not connected to a business network. Then Next and Finish. Restart the system.Again i go in Network ID and see that nothing is changed...I'm still a part of a business network......??? I think this is the problem !!! I think my computer is still in a domain, but i haven't a domain, so i can't reach the other computers and external Disk on the home network because they are not in a domain !!! Sharing solutions and mapping won't work now !!! Is this true ??
