Unable to access files across network
I have a small mixed network of Win7, Vista, and XP machines. All can access each others' public file folders EXCEPT my laptop running Vista, which can neither access files on other computers, nor can they access files on it. Internet connectivity is no problem. The error message is the usual 0x80070035, which is something like "Cannot connect to //LOUIS". Laptop sees all machines in network map, and is able to ping them, no problem; it's only when I click on the computer name in Explorer, I get the error message. Trying to access th eother machines via IP address does not work either. Everything is running Windows Firewall and no other Norton-type program. Have disabled firewalls to no avail. Problem occurs with both wireless and ethernet connections on the isolated laptop. TCP/IP v4 is ENABLED, v6 is DISABLED on the laptop; v6 is enabled on the other machines. Have spent a lot of time trying to figure out the issue but no luck, so all help is appreciated!

Can you connect to a share on your laptop directly? In the Run dialog box, type \\laptop_name\shared_folder, press enter, and what error do you get? (Make sure "shared_folder" on the laptop has Everyone Full permissions.) I suspect this could be an authentication issue. Pinging does not require SAM authentication, but it does prove that at least the network is working.

Remember to enable network discovery on Windows 7 and Windows Vista computer, after that enable simple file sharing on Win7 and try to access this shared folder from problematic Vista laptop, see whether it works.
