Unable to access Domain DFS via MS VPN from Vista domain computers
I have a domain DFS (\\mydomain.local\DFSshare), XP machines have no problem to access from LAN or via MS VPN(PPTP).Windows Vista machine can access the domain DFS share via LAN, however not via MS VPN/PPTP, either cannot find the share or user account doesn't exist. Further research discovers that a non-domain computer has no problem, as soon as join the domain, it unable to. Take the Vista machine out of the domain, re-gain access (with manual typing in domain name and password of course). Please provide your thought? Thanks.

Hi, Based on my experience, if this is an access denied issue happens with only VPN environment, its possibly authentication related. Because Windows Vista introduces a new function called Credential Manager to manage usernames and passwords. This function helps to decide the privilege of VPN access. RAS call Credential Manager any time the connection is attempted. If Windows Vista failed to communicate with this functionality, the access denied error may occur. I include the following possible solution for your reference: Set the below registry key to 1 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa Value Name: DisableDomainCreds Value Type: REG_DWORD Value: 1 Setting 0 allows domain credentials to be stored in the Credential Manager. Setting 1 disables domain credentials to be stored in the Credential Manager. Hope it helps! Cheers, Lionel

I am having a similiar problem using Sever 03 (R2/SP2) & XP machines over the VPN. I can map a drive to the DFS share and see the base directories but when I try to access any files, I get an access denied message. This happens in both domain member computers and non member machines on any account. I can access the files if I map a drive directly to the target machine so it's not an authentication issue (at least it wouldn't seem so).So, it's obviously not an isolated issue....I will keep all advised of my progress and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,Roger
