Unable to Show Vista Shared Folders on an XP machine.
Hi there,First post! So be gentle... Anyway Im having some issues with my new install of Windows Vista x64 Premium Edition. Im trying to set up shared folders so that my Windows XP Pro machine can access. Now the network is up and running, I can ping both machines back and forth and they share the same Workgroup name.I have set up a sharing folder on my XP machine, which i can access from Vista with no troubles but... When i create a shared folder on Vista the XP machine does not see it. Also i would like to note that the Vista machine does not show up in the "View Workgroup Computers" section in XP. I have disabled my windows firewalls on both machines, and switched off my nod32 virus scanner in an attempt to get the vista machine on to XPs network places.I have Network Discovery - On, File Sharing - On and Media Sharing - On. It is also set to a Private Network on vista.Im totally stumped, as the vista machine can see XP's shared files, but according to the XP machine Vista isnt on the workgroup (which it should be).Any help is greatly appreciated!----Oh and typing //vista/shared folder in run from XP to get it to open up the folder on vista doesnt work.

Hello Trox, To further diagnose the problem, it might helpto post the Windows IP Configuration (ipconfig /all) of the Windows Vista and Windows XP machines here. Do you have another firewall program installed on either computer besides the Windows Firewall? If so, what? -- Eric Cross Microsoft MVP (Windows Desktop Experience) http://mvp.support.microsoft.com

Trox 1. As you are sharing with an XP machine, you may need to install the Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder on the XP machine http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=4F01A31D-EE46-481E-BA11-37F485FA34EA&displaylang=en 2. Do the shared Vista folders have the two little people on their icons? If not start from scratch. This is guaranteed to share a folder on Vista, click the folder > Share on the toolbar, type 'Everyone' (not the quotes), click Add and set the drop down Permission Level alongside Everyone to either Reader or Co-owner then click Share at the bottom. Two little people should appear on the icons of those that are shared. Alternatively, drag the folders you want to share to the Public folder. 3. If youre not using passwords set Password Protected Sharing to Off, unless you want to set up identical usernames and passwords on all computers in your network. If you have it on, you will be asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer from an XP computer.

1. As you are sharing with an XP machine, you may need to install the Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder on the XP machine Yea i was searching the forum and found out about this so it was installed before i posted. 2. Do the shared Vista folders have the two little people on their icons? Yes, they have the sharing icon in the bottom left corner. I decided to start a fresh and followed the above, i still cant get vista to show up on xp workgroup list. It doesnt seem to exist, no path detected. 3. If youre not using passwords set Password Protected Sharing to Off, unless you want to set up identical usernames and passwords on all computers in your network. If you have it on, you will be asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer from an XP computer. Yea i have Passwords Protected Sharing off. I have no idea how to over come this, its a fresh install of Vista 64 as well

Trox Try setting up identically named accounts with a password on both the XP and Vista machines. Then on the Vista machine in Control Panel > Classic View > Network and Sharing Center change Password Protected Sharing to On.

Hi guys and girlsI was having the exact same issue as documented and had run through all the steps above. After much head scratching I managed to resolve my issue by checking/ ticking the 'File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks'option within the Local Area Connection Properties of the NIC (located within Network and Sharing Centre > Manage NetworkConnections > Right ClickLocal Area Connection at fault> Properties)used to connect to the LAN. Strangley!! this option seems to default to switched off. From the XP machine i was then able to view the file shares and printer shares by carrying out a net view \\computernameand could successfully attach.Hope this is of some help to others out thereAndy

There is a problem with your ipconfig on the xp machine. Notice that on the adapter listing it says NODE TYPE:UNKNOWN. Have you tried using the ipconfig /release then the ipconfig /renew functions of the command prompt on the xp machine ? If so, and you still have problems, check what the ipconfig /all command says for the adapter node afterwards and re-post it.NTauthority-local
