We have a greenfield deployment of Lync 2010 currently catering for 5000 users in an pilot. Recently we have been unable to search for Distribution lists in the Lync client, however clients used to be able to do this. As this was a greenfield deployment users were complaining about the time it took to search for newly enabled contacts in the Lync Client. To work around this issue the CSClientPolicy was modified to use the AddressbookAvailability as WebSearchOnly. I am wondering if the change to CSClientPolicy could have caused an issues when searching for Distribution Lists.

Ctrl + right-click Lync icon in systray, check the EWS and DG URL are correct.

You can create a new Distribution Group to have a test.

My Lync client is set to use web search and I can search the Distribution Group, so it is not related.

But you can confirm that by modifying the AddressbookAvailability to the value you set before.

Thanks for the reply. I have checked the EWS and DG URL and they seem to be correct correct. I have created a test CSClientUserPolicy, added a couple of test users to this policy and set it to use FileDownload, then tested and as expected this did not resolve the issue.  This functionality did work previously. The only changes to the config that I am aware was to modify the CSClientPolicy: AddressBookAvailability and DisplayPhoto. We also added some normalisation rules to allow users to view Office Phone numbers in users contact cards. Please note that this system is only deployed for IM and Presence, we do not have enterprise voice deployed at this stage.

Did this issue happen with other users who didnt change the client policy?

Please check the services on Lync Front End Server are all started.

Check if the Front End server has any errors.

Have the Lync client logging enabled for these users cant search distribution list.
