Unable to Access Workgroup
I did a fresh install of Windows XP using en_windows_xp_professional_with_service_pack_3_x86_cd_x14-80428.iso. I then applicat all of the high priority paths -- including IE 8.I assigned the computer to the same workgroup the rest of my LAN is on (call it WG).I installed Microsoft Security Essentials and downloaded the latest virus definitions and ran a scan.I am unable to browse the other XP machines on my LAN. In fact I cannot even see the new machine in the WG workgroup from the new machine. I tried:1. Start\My Computer2. Under Other Places I clicked on My Network Places3. Under Network Tasks I clicked on View Workgroup ComputersI got:---------------------------My Network Places---------------------------Wg is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available ---------------------------OK ---------------------------If I do the same thing from one of the other XP machines on my LAN after I click on View workgroup computers I get a list of all of the computers on my LAN -- including the new one. I can double click on the new one, get a prompt for a userid and password, enter them and see its shares. I can then double click on a share and see its contents. If I put the following in the Run window of the new machine:\\<Name of another XP machine\I see a list of the shares available on that machine. If I select one of the shares and press enter the share opens. In the left pane of Explorer I see:DesktopMy DocumentsMy Network Places Entire Network +Microsoft Terminal Services -Microsoft Windows Network -Wg -<Computer Name> -<Share Name> +Folder1 +Folder2 ... Printers and Raxes +Web Client NetworkRecycl BinWhat did I miss in setting up the new machine?Edit: The new machine is able to access the internet.

HiMaybe this can Help.Make sure that the Software Firewall on each computer allows free local traffic. If you use 3rd party Firewall On, Vista/XP Native Firewall should be Off, and the active Firewall has to adjusted to your Network IP numbers on what is some time called the Trusted Zone (consult your 3rd Party Firewall instructionsGeneral example, http://www.ezlan.net/faq#trustedPlease Note that some 3rd party Software Firewalls keep blocking aspects of Local Traffic even it they are turned Off (disabled). If possible configure the Firewall correctly, or totally uninstall it to allow clean flow of local network traffic. If the 3rd party software is uninstalled or disables, make sure that Windows native Firewall is On .Windows XP File Sharing - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;304040Printer Sharing XP - http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/honeycutt_july2.mspxWindows Native Firewall setting for Sharing XP -http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875357In Win XP pro you can Visually see the Permission/Security setting, and configure them to your liking.http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/security/learnmore/accesscontrol.mspx#securityTabWhen finished with the setting of the system it is advisable to Reboot all the hardware including the Router and all computers involved.Jack-MVP Windows Networking. You appear to have posted a generic response that does not address the problem at hand. The problem is that the machine cannot browse the workgroup it belongs to. It gets a permission denied type of error when trying to open the workgroup.

I apologize for appearing ungrateful but I thought my post was specific enough to rule out all of the items you listed.I did come across what looked like possible answers having to do with the Browser service. Unfortunately, the drive that I was using to test with has crashed. If I have the same problem when I rebuild the test machine I will come back.
