USB hard drives not assigned drive letters
Hi Folks, Windows 7 isn't automatically assigning drive letters to USB-connected hard drives when i plug them in. I have to go to disk manager, right click on the drive, and tell it to assign a drive letter. Any idea what I can do to fix this? thanks. Win 7 Pro x64 thinkpad t400 2764-CTO

It should be a driver compatibility issue. Do you have another external hard drive? If so, how does it work? Also you may contact the support of the manufacturer of the hard drive for more information.Arthur Xie - MSFT

I have problems with all the other external hard drives I've attached to this machine. Plus, these drives *used* to work just fine. It's just recently that this problem has cropped up. So, it's not a driver incompatibility issue. Please suggest other debugging steps.

This issue should be caused by software confliction. I suggest you boot in Clean Boot Mode to troubleshoot.Perform a clean startup to determine whether background programs are interfering with your game or program If it does not help, please temporary uninstall your antivirus suit and check the result.
