USB Wireless keeps disconnecting
Hi,I recently installed Windows Vista on a desktop machine and also installed the Conceptronic USB Wireless 54mbps device (C54RU) without problems. I used the device without any problems but after running the windows updates and nstalling all the updates successfully the wireless device keeps disconnecting. If I disconnect the wireless device and plug it on another USB port I can use it again but the result will be the same but if I do this, windows will hang when I try to restart/shutdown. It appears that the driver is hang somehow and windows cannot shut it down. Also, windows updates says that there is a new driver for this USB wireless device but if I install that driver, it will give me a BSOD right after a connection gets established.. so, also no luck her.I tried checking the event viewer and there are at least 2 events that appear to be related to this issue:ResourcePublication - The Service temporarily stopped publishing because of a power event. (Event originating from the fdrespub)WLan-AutoConfig - WLAN Autoconfig service has successfully stopped.I thought that the first event was related to windows turning off the device due to power consumption options but I turned it off in the device manager for the USB wireless and also in the power options is set to maximum performance, so it must be something else.I tried following some suggestions I found on other foruns: disabling ipv6, disable the auto tunning level, but none worked.Another attempt was to turn on the wireless tracing but I don't know very well what might be causing the problem. You can access the log file at: http://n0n4m3.codingcorner.net/stuff/wlan.txt (the disconnection happens around 01:13I contacted conceptronic about this but they didn't know what could be causing this problem.I'd appreciate if anyone could give me some tips on how to solve this problem.Thank you!Regards, Ricardo.

Hi Ricardo, This issue can be caused by one of the three reasons. 1. The anti-virus or firewall does not recognize the new components that was installed with updates. 2. The wireless adapter driver was corrupt during update. 3. Your wireless adapter is not compatible with the new version system. I suggest that you temporary disable the anti-virus and firewall, then check the result. If the issue persists, follow the steps below to remove the existed driver. Then reinstall it. 1. Click Start, click Run, type in "devmgmt.msc" (without quotation marks) and press Enter. 2. In Device Manager, double click to expand the branch Network Adapters 3. Right click the entry of your wireless adapter and click Uninstall to uninstall the driver. 4. Click Start, in the Start Search box type "appwiz.cpl" and press Enter. 5. Find and remove all the card reader related entries. 6. Download the latest driver from the following website. http://www.conceptronic.net/site/desktopdefault.aspx?tabindex=0&tabid=200&Cat=10&grp=1010&ar=&Prod_ID=691&Prod=C54RU&subid=555# Important Note: Microsoft provides third-party contact information to help you find technical support. This contact information may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this third-party contact information. 7. Install the driver. If the issue still occurs, please launch ncpa.cpl from Start Search box, remove the wireless connection, and re-create the connection. If the above information does not help, please let me know if you have installed SP1, and whether the C54RU device supports SP1. Additionally, you may follow the steps below to collect network tracing log, and try to find clues from the log. Run the following commands from an elevated CMD prompt (Run as administrator). a) netsh ras set tracing * enable b) netsh wlan set tracing mode=yes c) - Run the connection attempt and wait for it to fail - d) netsh wlan set tracing mode=no (IMPORTANT: Wait for the command to return back to the command line. This may take several seconds.) e) netsh ras set tracing * disable The logs generated will be located in the %SystemRoot%\tracing directory. Hope it helps.

Hi Arthur, thank you for your reply.I had already tried to uninstall and install the Conceptronic C54RU driver several times, as well as the driver that windows update suggested (from Ralink) and the another one from Ralink page since the C54RU chipset is from Ralink but these last two drivers give me blue screens.I don't have antivirus and I also had already tried disabling the firewall without success...I have SP1 and I don't know if the drivers are compatible with the SP1 but the problem happened before I had SP1 installed, so my guess is that some update "broke" the drivers' functionality (or the driver isn't very well programmed).I don't have anymore programs installed on the system so it can only be the updates.About the logs, if you notice the bottom part of my other e-mail, I had already logged this problem but I couldn't figure out what was going on.Here are some logs from tonight's attempt:http://n0n4m3.codingcorner.net/stuff/wlan.txthttp://n0n4m3.codingcorner.net/stuff/msmsec.txthttp://n0n4m3.codingcorner.net/stuff/IpHlpSvc.LOGThe connection drops at about: 22:30:30 I guess due to this event:[3860] 22:30:30.830 INFO: Received PORT DOWNAll three logs seem to point that there's a problem around this time but I can't figure what it was nor how I can figure out its cause.Do you know what might be causing this?

Hi Ricardo, It seems that the drivers on Windows Update site and on Ralink website are not compatible with your device. From this situation, suspect that your computer is from computer manufacturer and the driver for the network device is customized by them. If so, please download the driver from the computer manufacturer's website. Before installing the driver, Please note that the existed driver needs to be removed.

Hi Arthur, when you mention computer manufacturer's website, are you referring to the motherboard manufacturer? If this is the case then what network device driver are you talking about?I have a Gigabyte EP-35 DS4 and 3 drivers installed, the Realtek driver for audio, the Realtek driver for Lan and the Intel ICH9R driver for the chipset. One interesting thing though is that the Intel ICH9R driver provided in the webpage for my motherboard is from 2007 and much older than the one provided by windows update (which are the ones I have installed). If you were referring to the wireless device manufacturer's website (Conceptronic) then I have the latest drivers installed.

Hi Ricardo, You built this computer by yourself. Is it the case? If so, the driver from the Conceptronic website should work. As the issue persists, I suggest that you temporary disable the anti-virus and firewall, then try to connect. If the issue remains, temporary remove the security programs, also recreate the wireless connection, and then check the result.

Hi Arthur,Yes, I assembled the computer myself. The driver from the Conceptronic website is the one that works correctly without the Windows Updates but as soon as I install these updates the wireless device stops working correctly. As I said earlier, I don't have any additional programs installed on my system, only Windows Vista, drivers and updates. The Windows firewall is turned off and I recreated the wireless connection countless times so.. I'm running out of options.Since I don't can't figure out what's wrong just by looking at the wireless logs, I guess the only and painful way to know what is going on is to reinstall windows and install the updates one by one and check which update is conflicting with the wireless device.Thank you for your help.

Hi Ricardo, Since the driver from the Conceptronic website works fine, but the issue occurs after you install the driver update, I suggest that you just hide the driver update. Hide the update ============================ 1. Click on the Start Button, type "Windows Update" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box and press Enter. 2. On the left pane, click the "Check for updates" button. 3. If any optional updates have been found, it will be listed. In that case, please click the "View available updates" option. 4. Right click on the optional update and click "Hide update". In general situation, if your driver is the latest, the driver update should not be offered. The driver update may be not a official version, or for some special versions. In this case, we may just hide the update as a workaround.

Thank you Arthur.I was finally able to fix my problem after searching a lot on the internet. Although I don't like it very much, here's the solution:1. Open command prompt with administrator privileges.2. Type: net localgroup Administrators Local Service /ADD3. Type: net localgroup Administrators Network Service /ADD4. RebootAs you may have noticed we're elevating 2 accounts to administrator privileges which might impose a security risk if anyone has access to one of these accounts (by exploiting a service that runs under one of these accounts for example).I wonder why do I need these two accounts to have administrator privileges to work correctly with my wireless adapter but oh well, it works.EDIT: My bad, it didn't work but the connection seems to drop less after these changes. Don't know if it's just coincidence but I'll have to test more to check what is going on.EDIT 2: After digging a bit more I think I isolated the problem to the umpnpmgr.dll using process monitor. I turned off the UPnP Device Host service and the wireless adapter has been working fine since then.

Hi, Generally, we do not need to add the two users Local Service and Network Service into Administrator group. Since the issue can be resolved after you try the suggestion, I suspect that your driver is not compatible with Windows Vista. Because of that, Local Service or Network Service does not have privilege to launch some progress or driver files. Arthur Xie - MSFT
