If they don't support DMA6, you're not going to get it. My guess is it's not the HDD DMA that's slowing you down, but rather some program you're running is a resource hog. What type of system do you have, CPU, RAM, etc.? When it starts to slow down, what does Task Manager show as being the biggest hog? SC Tom

I am aware of installed software and none is taking the memory or the CPU, I got CPU at 0 when idle my config is: i7 920 - 4 gb ram and my asus motherboard see the drive as udma 6 !!

I also have an I7 based system (Intel X58 chipset). All of my drives are SATA, and I am using AHCI mode. The drives show up as DMA Mode 5. One of them is an SSD, and it tests at the expected data rates. Another HD is a WD Caviar Black 1.5TB; it works reasonably fast, too. I'm not sure what your problem might be, but I believe that youre looking in the wrong place.

What model MB do you have? And it's seen as an ATAPI CD-ROM? Hmmm. . . .

Your drive itself may support UDMA6, but if the MB only supports 5, that's the best you'll do. SC Tom

SC Tom Hi, According to the Specifications information in the ASUS Motherboards site, this motherboard should support the UMDA6: 1 xUltraDMA 133/100/66 for up to 2 PATA devices I suggest going to enable the UMDA6 in bios to test this issue. For more information, please refer to the following link: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/147965-45-udma5-theoretically-udma Please Note: Since the website is not hosted by Microsoft, the link may change without notice. Regards, Sabrina I see no where in the specs or in the manual that specifically says "UDMA6" or "UltraDMA6", but UDMA5 is. Even the shot of the BIOS screen shows UDMA5 for the HDD set up. I think that point is moot, though. I don't believe the difference in transfer rate between 5 and 6 is going to cause that much of a slowdown on the OP's system to where someone could tell without diagnostic or benchmark software.
