Two issues with Windows 7 RC1 regarding Onscreen Keyboard and Automatic Login
'm a quadriplegic and I use a SmartNav head tracking system and a sip/puff switch for mouse control. I use an onscreen keyboard to type. In Vista and XP Home I generally use the one built into Windows. I installed Windows 7 into it's own partition on my Acer Netbook D150 with 2GB RAM. Beforehand I put the drivers for my SmartNav, as well as other files rhat I would want access to into a folder on the root of partition D:. After installing Windows 7, with help, I I installed my SmartNav drivers and had no problems. I went to Start->Ajj Programs->Accessories->Ease of Access->On-Screen Keyboard and it didn't load. I tried again with the same result. I opened Task Manager and it wasn't running under Applications or Processes. So, I hunred down the Use On-Screenboard option in the Ease of Access center, turned it on, and clicked Apply. Still no onscreen keyboard. I figured that maybe it was still being worked on and that I'd report it as an issue. So, I got someone to help me search for one online and installed it. It worked just fine. After doing Windows Update and making a few tweaks, I restarted the computer and up comes the built in onscreen keyboard. So, it works, but not until a restart. Howeve,r it still has problems. There aren't any options for setting keyboard type, click sounds, always on top, etc... I'm thinking that it's just not finished. Another problem with it, is that it's huge. Even usizing ir as small as it will go takes up a ton of space. So, for now i'm using a 3rd party one. Since they're working on updating the onscreen keyboard for Windows 7, perhaps they can fix an annoying bug that plagues all of the older versions. That being that if you minimize the keyboard while performing other tasks, then select it when you need it, it comes up and immediately also brings forward the last application that you used the keyboard with. This is quire annoying. I don't if it's already been fixed for the Windows 7 version and I don't feel like rebooting to find out. Which brings me to my second issue. I cannot get automatic login to work under Windows 7. I ran control userpasswords2 and changed my account to not require a password. I clicked Apply and entered my password and confirmed it. I restarted Windows and it still required me to log in. I ran control userpasswords2 again and the settings were there. Why is it still asking me to login? Also, before anybody brings up netplwiz, it opens the same exact dialog application as control userpasswords2. I ran regedit and checked HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon which used to have all of the automatic login settings. The AutoAdminLogon entry is set to 1. The DefaultUsername entry has my username. I don't want to add a DefaultPassword setting because I don't really like having my password unencrypted in the registry. Any ideas why it's failing? I really need this so that I don't need to get somebody to log me in every tine I reboot. In the registry I noticed a key called HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\AutoLogonChecked. It only contains the (Default) entry. Thanks for any help in advance.
