Two general questions on Vista security issues
Hi Guys, Can anyone help with the following questions? Platform is Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP2 1) How to always run Task Manager showing *processes from all users * ? (At the moment you have to click the show all processes button every time) 2) How to stop Network Discovery enabling itself? This keeps happening on my 802.11g connection and I don't know why. I keep disabling it but it comes back. When I disable it, it tells me it has to turn the Windows Firewall on. The firewall I use is ZoneAlarm. The network is set to Public. Thanks!

The following article shows you how to run the CLI version of a task manager function called Task List. This provides much the same info although it’s not in a nice GUI format and it’s not rendered dynamically. http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/tasklist.mspx?mfr=true In regards to Network Discovery, here is the Microsoft Article on how to enable / disable it using the standard GUI. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Enable-or-disable-network-discovery If it keeps coming back on then you have to set in in local policy. This is where it gets all whacked. The settings are counterintuitive and will only appear to support the opposite of what you are trying to do. Please see the following article: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc755075(WS.10).aspx Clearly, you could set the firewall to prevent discovery via port requests from the outside world, which may be your only method to accomplish what you are trying to do. I am just not clear what risk you are trying to mitigate to know if this is the right approach. Ken F www.kmbl.us Ken F
