Turning off display win7 RC
Hi! I am running on my notebook Windows 7 RC 64bit ( build7100). I had a problem, which actually occured in all Win7 builds I tried ( build 7048, 7057, 7068, 7077). In Power Options I activated the option "Turn off Display" for 5 minutes. Well the display turns off indeed, but after 2-3 seconds it turns ON again! I thought it has something to do with the drivers for the graphic card (GeForce 8600GT). Now I just installed the 185.81 drivers for Win7 x64 from Nvidia webpage. I tried also with the 185.68 for Vista x64, with the drivers from Windows Update (petty old) and also wit the drivers from the manufacturer (MSI). No success! I restored the default settings fro every power plan and I rstarted after - No success. The display turns always on after few secs. The Scree Saver (when I activae it) is working without problems. I deactivate Hibernate state, but I don't think it has anything to do with turning off display,or? On the same Notebook I have Win XP Prof x32 and Vista x64 installed. On these two OS the problem doesn't occur. I use a wireless connection with Intel wifi 4965AGN which is always on. But also when I turn off the Wlan card the problems stays. I deactivate "allow wake times" in Power Options and I also install a program named "Turn Off Monitor", but even when I use this program, the dispaly turns off and then after 2 sec...Guess what! It is ON again! I have the actual drivers for all components (checked with DriverUpdate, Driver Genius, windows Update), I use no LAN, and the settings in BIOS for Power Options I wouldn't change them, since in windows Vista x64 everything is ok. Do you have any suggestions about this? I would really appreciate it! Thanks a lot!

Hi, Can you try unplugging your mouse from your notebook, and any other USB peripherals? If this doesn't help, please try disabling the touchpad on your laptop. If the above doesn't work, please try using MSCONFIG, and do a Diagnostic Startup and let us know if you are still experiencing this issue. Let us know if this helps.Jabez Gan [MVP] - http://www.msblog.org Contributing Author for: (Sybex) MCTS: Windows Server 2008 Applications Infrastructure Configuration Study Guide: Exam 70-643

Hello, and thank you very much for your fast answer. I've tried what you suggested. First I unplugged the USB Mouse (the only USB device Ihave) and no chnage. then I deactivated the touchpad in BIOS - the problem remains. I've runned a msconfig diagnostic startup.... Well, the only change I've seen was that the display got DIMMED after few minutes, but it didn't turn off, not even 30min. I couldn't check the settings, because I coulnd't access the Power Options after I made diagnostic startup. I rebooted normal now and....still no change. Display turns off as set and then after 2sec it turns on again.... I don't know what could be...? Thank you very much!

What windows 7 RC you use? If you download your RC from torrent or other unofficial site, your problem may occur by trojan / worm that came within your RC ISO.For official W7 beta RC download : http://technet.microsoft.com/nb-no/evalcenter/dd353205(en-us).aspx

Is the screensaver enabled? -------------------------clouseau convention

Hello! I've tried all these solutions... I presumed it is a drriver problem and, since nothing worked, I decided to install Win7 new ( the official RC from Microsoft site). After installation - no drivers installed yet-- I set the display to go off after 5 min and it worked!!! I was thinking to install the drivers one by one, to reboot and to see if the problem occurs. Well, after the first try, after I install the NVIDIA drivers, the problem returned. The diplay goes off for 1sec and the it turns on again. Stand-by is working, no other applications were instaled, nor screensavers etc. (Windows fresh install). I uninstalled the Nvidia drivers, rebooted...Everything works ( with the generic VGA driver). I tried 4 versions of Nvidia drivers ( from Windows Update, the last driver from Nvidia site (special for Win7) , a modded one, another older version for Vista x64). Everytime, the problem returns. So...no sinn to search more...The NVIDIA drivers are guilty fro the trouble. so.....Seems cannot do anything than waiting for another release or... :( Thanks
