I have the same problem trying to get an XP to communicate with my 7. I did all the things recommended in the reply to this post, but none of it has worked. No matter what I do it still asks for a password, and it doesn't even tell me whether it's the user name or the password that doesn't work. And whoever said to SAVE the settings, hasn't tried this himself, because it sure didn't work! This is driving me batty.

When Win 7 is in a Network with other computers that are Not running Win 7, the "Work" type of Network has to be configured. Setting the Password protection to On or Off is only the first step. There is a need to set the users and their Read and Write Permissions. If there is No other users, but only you and your multiple computers. Switch On the Guest Account, and give it permission to do what ever you want to do. Example, http://www.ezlan.net/network/7-shares.jpg

Hi.. I have the same problem as iAlert. I can't turn off password protected sharing, every time i switch it to OFF and save changes, the next time i will reopen the options is ON again.. Searching over the Internet last night i found that, a lot of people having the same problem and they are desperate because they don't know how to solve it. I have tried everything, switch Network mode from Home to public or private, enable and disable file sharing, enable disable HomeGroup, without luck. I am trying to connect an EG-R1 media player over the LAN, the device is finding the workgroup but is continuously ask for username and password. This is definitely a bug... Can you look in to it.

I also have the same problem, and I even can not find the button to switch off "password protected sharing" with XP PRO SP3. Where can this be found in SP3?
