Trying to open Outlook Express without every time typing in my password. Also, fix problem: links in email messages won't open
I have two computers with outlook express. Only one has these issues: I open outlook express and have to type in my password to gain access and again when I''m sending an email. My other computer doesn't ask me to do that. Also, I all of a sudden can't get links to web sitesw to open up. I have to copy and paste in Internet Explorer to open them. I've tried a bunch of the more obvious things (Tools/Accounts/Properties, etc... but they don't change anything).2 people need an answerI do too

Bruce: I don't know my way around computers so I was nervous about trying some of these suggestions, but I did anyway. After trying unsuccesfully a few I tried the final one, after: "If still no joy..." Doing exactly as you said it fixed the problem. I think all of this started after I downloaded a free trial version of the anti virus program Avast. When trying to fix this problem, suspecting Avast might have had something to do with it I un-installed it but nothing changed. Is it possible that it made changes to my settings (ie: firefox versus iexplore) which remained after I uninstalled it? In any case, thanks very much. Steve Vale Email removed for privacy

You're welcome.Hyperlinks is an issue that has plagued OE for as long as I know. It may have been Avast, but it pretty much could have been anything including the infamous OE gremlins that set it off.Somewhat OT: IMHO, Avast free is fine, I used it for a couple of years, and so is MSE. Been using that for about six months.Avast:http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html In the case of Avast, choose Custom Installation and under Resident Protection, uncheck: Internet Mail and Outlook/Exchange. Bruce: You helped me with one problem which worked out fine last week, re links in my email. Today I decided to try to solve the problem re having to retype my password everytime in O.E. I have done the typical tools/account/properties, etc... which didn't work. So I went through the list of solutions and tried the one that is referenced by Q290684. I am not technically savvy but I followed everything I thought carefully, restarted OE and tried sending a message to myself but am getting error messages. I sent an email to my wife and she got it. The messages are coming up on the Comcast server. When I used Windows Live ID to look for a solution I was referenced to directions that look a lot like the other ones except that it called for regedit versus regedt32. In any case, when I tried to follow them, under "Locate the following registry key:" HKEY_CURRENT_USER" is now not there. Any idea what I might have down wrong and, more importantly, how I can fix it? I don't want to drop a bundle at Best Buy if I don't have to. ThaNKS,sTEVE vALEEmail removed for privacy508-339-4678

1: What is the complete text of the error you get when you try to send? Copy & paste it into this thread.2: If you were missing " HKEY_CURRENT_USER" from your registry, you wouldn't have been able to even make this post. For most people, the first link by Doug Knox is the easiest way and usually the fix. You can also try just removing the account, rebooting and add the account back. Bruce Hagen MS-MVP [Mail]

Bruce: Sorry to bug you again but I don't know if this helps you: When I try to send an email the error message reads something like 'one of the recipients was not recognized: Email removed for privacy. But the only recipient was me, Email removed for privacy. Also, maybe unrelated, but all of my sent messages since 2/1/10 are missing from the comcast email server although they are still on my oe program.?Steve Vale

Bruce: I really do apologize for making you crazy with this but it appears that even though I'm still getting the error message ("One of the recipients was rejected by the server, Email removed for privacy") I'm still receiving the email. Thing is, I'm only sending it to myself at Email removed for privacy. Once there was an account DadVale but I can no longer find it and thoght I had deleted it long ago.I also have no idea why the sent emails on my Comcast page from 2/1 to 1/30 are gone but the ones I send today are showing up. The menu in Comcast that asks me when to9 delete them is checked 'never'.

Bruce: I don't know why, I didn't change anything, but 1. The original issue appears to be solved: I no longer have to provide my password in OE. Also, the other issue, where it started giving me the error message about the server not recognizing the recipient DadVale, that's all of a sudden not happening. So the OE program seems (I hope) to be working OK. However, On Comcast.net, the messages I send to myself are appearing in that inbox but there are no sent emails since 2/1, including ones I'm sending today. Any thoughts on why that's happening? Also, why would the other issue I was emailing you about (the error message re DadVale) all of a sudden go away?

Bruce: This is embarrasing. Now, in Comcast.net, all of my formerly missing 'sent' email reappeared. Is comcast screwing around? I could have sworn that the registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER was not there before. I will check it again and again, sorry for all this silliness.

Also, why would the other issue I was emailing you about (the error message re DadVale) all of a sudden go away? It would appear that all of this is Comcast related, and not Outlook Express, especially since the messages are in OE's Sent Items. Make sure you're not going over any of Comcast's Webmail quotas.I would like you do do the following. It won't hurt. You could probably use the cleanup. And if the problem remains, then it definitely points to Comcast.First, make sure your settings match these. If you're using port 25, change the SMTP port to 587 and make sure: My Server Requires Authentication is checked. How do I set up/configure Outlook Express, Windows Mail & Windows Live Mail for Comcast email?http://www.comcast.com/customers/faq/FaqDetails.ashx?Id=2288 Second, create some fresh folders.Move most of your messages out of the Inbox and then create new Outbox and Sent Items folders after you move any messages you wish to save to a local folder you create. Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Write the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer or, copy and paste it into Start | Run. In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View. With OE closed, find the DBX files for the Outbox & Sent Items and delete them. New ones will be created automatically when you open OE. After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. General precautions for Outlook Express: Do not archive mail in the Inbox or Sent Items. Create your own user defined folders and move the messages you wish to save to them. Empty Deleted Items folder daily. Although dbx files have a theoretical capacity of 2GB, I recommend about a 300MB max for less chance of corruption. Information about the maximum file size of the .dbx files that are used by Outlook Express:http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=903095 Compact often as specified above.Lastly:Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs, slows down sending and receiving, and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs, account setting changes and has even been responsible for loss of messages. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 Why you don't need your anti-virus to scan your emailhttp://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm Note that for some AV programs, it may be necessary to uninstall the program and reinstall in Custom Mode and uncheck e-mail scanning when the option arises.
