You need a program that can handle .RAR files. Couple of examples are Winrar & 7zip. I prefer 7zip as it is truely freeware and also comes in a 64bit version.

Switching to FF from IE8 shouldn't affect file associations. Have you tried re-installing Winrar?

As you have installed WinRAR, you can try to following steps to open the .rar file: 1 Right click the .rar file 2 Click “open with” 3 Click “Choose default program” 4 Choose “Always use the selected program to open this kind of file” 5 Click “Browse” and find the WinRAR.exe program 6 Click “Open” Anymore, please try to reinstall WinRAR or you can uninstall Firefox and download in IE and to see if the same issue appears. But recent issue I could determine only with the aid of a tool from Inet. It would relieve in this trouble too - fix rar .
