Truetype fonts not compatible?
Over the years, I've accumulated several hundred fonts, which I use frequently for my artwork. After I switched over to Windows 7, I realized every single TrueType font seemed not to be compatible. Sure enough, none of my programs seemed to know they existed. My TrueType fonts consist of every thing that isn't the default font pack. Are TrueType fonts really not compatible? Is there something obvious I'm missing?

Did you "Install" the fonts. Don't just drag them into your fonts folder. Select the fonts you want to install, and right click on them, and pick install from the menu.I have over 300 TT fonts on my WIn 7 machine, and they work fine.Kurt

@ Scapino - Actually, Kurt, dragging a TTF to the C:\Windows\Fonts folder goes through the routine of installing the font into Windows. The only time you can have an issue is when copying Type 1 fonts to the folder. If you copy the PFB before the PFM, it will cough up an error saying that it can't find the legit PFM. @moonlaughmaster - TrueType fonts are compatible - as are OpenType fonts. Type 1 fonts are compatible as long as you've got the PFM and PFB files. Exactly what sort of error are you getting when with them?

When I open up the font viewer, it looks and works fine. When I search for it in word, Photoshop, anything, it pops up an error message with: "The font '<font name>' is not available on your system. Would you like to use it anyway?" If I say yes, it just displays as TNR (times new roman), if I say no, it reverts back to TNR with the same effect. Hmm... I just found out that I don't think that it is the font types that is the issue, I think it is just default versus installed. TNR is also a TrueType, but it works fine. All of my custom fonts don't show up. I tried reinstalling one of my custom fonts, but it still didn't work.

MoonLaughMaster - When you open the font in Font Viewer, there's an install button near the top. Did you click on that button or did you try installing it some other way?

I tried it using both the install button and using just the dragging.

MoonlaughMaster - Ok... So if you navigate to C:\Windows\Fonts - and you look in the folder, do you see the font(s) in question? And if you do, if you click on one of your fonts, does it open properly? Specifically which font(s) are doing this? (Foundry / font name)

Yes to both. Basically every font that doesn't come default with Windows 7. Example.... 28 Days Later This font worked on my XP operating system.

MoonlaughMaster,Oddly enough, this font just downloaded and installed fine for me. Tested it in Word right after. You might want to check permissions on this key:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FontsFolderyour username should have only 'read' and administrator should have read and full control. Also, System should be the same as administrator with read and full control.Last, Creator Owner should have special permissions only.

Yup, I checked it, and everything is set to what it should be. EDIT: Ok, that is weird. I decided to try reinstalling 28 days later just for grins and it works now. I tried the same thing with another font, and it works as well. I swear it didn't not 24 hours ago.

I think I figured it out. I just have to reinstall all of the fonts using the install button. It didn't work last time I turned on the computer, I don't know what changed.
