Trouble connecting WIndows 7 Pro to domain on SBS 2003
Just build 2 new Win7 Pro machines. We want to join them to the domain. We added the pc's in active directory first. Then we went to \\server\connectcomputer and it starts, then tells us we have to be a member of the local administrators group. Saw that there was a KB on the issue, so we downloaded and applied the supposed fix to no avail. Been looking for documentation about the error to understand it better. Is it teling me we need to create an account on the pc that is also a domain admin? Or is it telling me the account on the pc trying to connect to the domain needs to be an administrator on the pc? We tried both, same issue. So im not sure where the problem lies. A separate but probably related issue, if we try to join the domain the old fashioned way (changing from workgroup to domain in computer properties) it says the dc cant be located. We know its there because the other 25 workstations are on the domain and are working fine. Im assuming they are related, but I cant figure out what the problem is. The dc is 203 SBS with service pack 2, The client pc is win7 Pro Turned off the firewall on the client, (just to be sure). Turned off the firewall briefly on the server (just to be sure). We tried the usual suspects like renaming the pc, deleting the ad client pc entry and re-adding it. (that sometimes worked for pesky xp machines)

Hi, Please assign a static IP address, Gateway and DNS address on the problematic machine first, and then try to add it to the domain again. If the issue persists, please also create a WINS address on the Windows 7 machine which is just the address of the DC. If the error message still pops up, please capture it and upload it for research. Thanks, Novak

I will give this a try. I don't want to play with the ip settings remotely so i will make a trip back to the office. Have results for you shortly!

Ip address was already static so it was easy to change the rest of the settings remotely. Dns is pointing to the server already. I added a WINS entry also pointing to the server. Gateway is pointing to the dhcp server. Still will not join. \\server\connectcomputer still will not work if we switch from workgroup to domain, it says " An active directory domain controller for the domain could not be contacted Same issues as before

Hi, Can you ping the target server? At this stage, I suggest you clear the static IP address and obtain IP address automatically. Then, please move the machine to another Workgroup and join the domain back again. If issue still occurs, please restart the machine and collect the following log file when trying to join the domain again. Collect the Netmon trace on the problematic machine ========================= a. Download NetMon3.3 from the following website and install it on the computer http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=983b941d-06cb-4658-b7f6-3088333d062f b. Launch NetMon3.3. c. In the Microsoft Network Monitor 3.3 window, click Create a new capture tab … d. In the new tab, select all the Network Adapters in the Select Networks window. e. Then, switch to Network Monitor, press F5 to start NetMon. f. Try to download the large file. When it failed, go to step 7. g. Go back to the NetMon window and press F7 to stop the NetMon. h. Press Ctrl+S to save the Netmon file named test. i. Please upload it for research. Thanks, Novak

We finally got it to work. We had the dc recreate some dns files, and it allowed us to join. We still couldnt do it with \\server\connect computer, but changing from workgroup to domain worked afterwards. Thanks for your help!
