Transferring files from Vista to Windows 2000 extremely slow!!
I ran across a very strange problem with transferring files in Vista. I can download files and folders from all servers with no problems but uploading to any server that is windows 2000 is extremely slow (20 mins for 60 MG of data). Allthough I can download from the same servers with no problem at all. This is a very consistent and repeatable problem. I have 3 different 2000 servers and 3 different 2003 servers and it is consistent across the board. I have tried as suggested by MS to modify the autotunninglevel to disabled see link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932170/en-usto no avail. Please help, this is mind boggling and I am getting nowhere trying to research this problem.Jason

Hi Jason, Before we go any further, please help to confirm the following points. Thanks for your cooperation. Is it a domain or a workgroup environment? Are the Vista and the servers located in different subnet? Is there any router, firewall, switch between them? Is the speed normal if you upload files to the servers from other client workstations? Does it become any better if uploading files from the command line directly? Has the NIC been installed the latest driver? What is the NIC model? The vista and and servers are on the same subnet with no security devices separating them. This only effects Vista machines, this does not effect xp clients. Copying from the command line using Robocopy has the same issues. What makes the issue even stanger is that from a windows 2000 server if I pull the data from a vista machine I do not run experience the slowness. Only when I push the data to a windows 2000 machine. Hi Jason, Thank you for your response. Please understand that it may take a lot of time to resolve this issue. Based on the current situation, please restart the Vista and log into save mode with networking and check if the issue disappears. If so, please perform the following actions to narrow the issue down to a particular service/program: 1. Perform a clean boot to disable 3rd party services and startup items. Then, restart the machine and log into normal mode. How to perform a clean boot in Windows Vistahttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135/en-us 2. If the issue persist, temporarily uninstall anti-virus and try again. (Please fully uninstall the anti-virus instead of disabling) Please let me know the result so that I can provide an action plan corresponding to it. Thank you for your cooperation. Sorry for the delay on responding to this post. I ended up calling MS and the case was esculated after a couple of days. The engineers took a bunch of network captures and determined that we needed Hotix 931770. Which fixed our problem "uploading data to a 2000 server" at the command prompt but the issue still remained in the GUI. What we did find that was interesting is that this issue only showed itself when files were contained in folders. If you selected the contents of a folder and copied them to a 2000 server then the problem did not appear but once contained in folder then it just hangs at "calculating time" MS has determined that this is bug andis still working on the issue. If this is not resolved pretty quickly we will not be rolling out Vista on our desktop refresh. Thanks for your feedback.
