Transferring 7 from disc to disc
Is it possible to move Windows 7 (installed as an update to Vista Ult) from one disc to another without a reload?I put Windows 7 over Vista but now 7 is reliable enough to do most work I'd like to put it on a faster disc. To do it from scratch would take for ever. Any advice?DaveDave

HiTo transfer installed copy from one HDD to another HDD, use software that can make and install drive images, like Norton Ghost for exampleTo be sure you will have no problems running after transfer it is better to create image of entire drive but not of W7 partition only

Thank you for that.Poses problems tho'. The current disc it's held on is a hoofing great unpartitioned 500GB Raid 1 twosome, and I want to put in on a partitioned80GBRaptor (as you are correctly implying I should have done in the first place), so perhaps just moving across a disc image isn't on.Or is it?Any other good ideas?Dave

Personnaly, I would just use xcopy from a WinPE command prompt: If E: is the new drive,E:\> xcopy C:\ /c/e/h/k/yIf you don't have a WinPE boot cd, you can boot the Vista or Windows 7 install dvd and select "Repair my Computer". Eventually you can select "Open a command prompt".Remember to make the new drive a system drive (bootable) and remove the old drive before you boot the new drive. I would use diskpart.exe under WinPE to create the new partition before the xcopy. I would also use bootsect.exe to ensure the correct boot sector on the new drive.Otherwise, if you want to have them both active under Windows, you will want to change the drive letters in the registry on the new drive. This will be under the keyHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices in the hive E:\Windows\System32\config\SYSTEM, assuming E: is the new drive. If you are uncomfortable with all this you can use Ghost. I have used it and it can deal with drives of different size.

Please mark my first replay as answerbecause it answer your question completelyI cannot understand what is the problem. If you want to move to partitioned drive then create image only on W7 partition and install image on your 80GB partitionAfter transfering partition run W7 DVD and use repair to fix possible boot problemIf size of source and destination partitions does not match this is not problem

Well, althoughone messagehas been marked as an answer to my question, I didn'tmark it soand it isn't. The answer is to do a clean install of 7 on to the new disc -as recommended by MS.Dave

Your original post asked if it was possible, not the best way.My xcopy way works, but with Vista or Windows 7 you also have to re-create the directory junctions and symbolic links. To find all the links you can type: C:\> dir /al/s > dirlinks.txtThen, you can use mklink to re-create them on the new drive. The links are generally absolute, so you need to create them pointing to the original path. E.g: E:\> mklink /j "E:\Documents and Settings" C:\Users
