Total Available Physical Memory is Unavailable in Windows 7
Hi,I installed windows 7 (32Bit) on a PC which had 1 GB of RAM initially. The physical memory was displayed correctly in Computer properties and also in msInfo32. Recently, I upgraded RAM by adding another 2GB. I can see the total physical memory in BIOS and also in Windows in MSInfo32 as Total Physical Memory Available as 2.75 GB. But the total physical memory installed is shown as unavailable, in Computer Properties as well as in MSINfo32.Is it a bug?In vista., it properly displays the total physical memory installed as i have installed 4GB of RAM in vista32 machine.thanks.

a_r_Barath -Er.. Just to make sure I'm reading you right. You had 1 GB of RAM to start with, you added 2 more GB, that would be 3 GB.. No? Or did you replace the 1 GB with 4 total GB? Or are we just talking two separate machines?ALL 32 bit OS's, for what it's worth, can't use more than a maximum of 4 GB. That's because 232 = 4 GB. As such, Windows requires a certain amount of RAM to be reserved for system devices - video card, drive controllers, the USB subsystem, etc... As such, you won't ever see the full 4 GB on a 32 GB system. I think the most you can see is like 3.5 GB or so.2.75 seems a bit low, however...

Complementing to that was Wolfie said, you should understand the difference between the values in Msinfo32:Installed Physical Memory (RAM) - that's what the name says, how much RAM you have installed on your machine;Total Physical Memory - that's how much RAM is used by Windows, can differ from the first value;Available Physical Memory- that's a value that reflects the current memory usage and will be different each time you open Msinfo32.Mobile AMD64 3000+, VIA Apollo K8T800 chipset, 1 G RAM, ATIRadeonMobility 9700, 20x DVDRW, C:XPSP3 (55G),D:WIN7 (25G),F:DATA (250G)

To reply Wolfie2k6, SanmartinI guess the understanding is not quiet right. The RAM installed is 1 GB + 2GB., so Total 3 GB. I am aware that the shared graphics card consumes memory and hence the remaining should appear there. But there is blank in total physical memory installed section. However in msinfo32 the Total Physical memory available is shown as 2.75GB which is 250MB less (due to shared graphics) of the physical memory installed. My question is why is the total physical memory installed is shown as unavailable in the system, when i added additional 2gb of ram.To illustrate i would post the screenshot as well.http://pt0rlq.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pMD4oWUvXJDA-nEiNzAnKJQvRocqsuU1BfeuNZNSR9tZZQWL1jLL-jaIn6CdBxpqxDIQyBnhZCUMsVwdKyVb62v_nJMn_jFgm/Clip.jpghttp://pt0rlq.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pl07S_uSW8VOyZ5dTQFpLKqUwhE4h1Vgf99qRMXX7OxBSIOKiostecwNOAOjAq_xDgOUnIOD4WiYCzgTqYWDKODLA6MZEs5vm/Clip_2.jpgIn Vista memory it is just displayed as memory in which i have 4gb and is displayed properly.tks..

Hi,the screenshots were very helpful. For me, the difference between your Windows 7 and your Vista machine points to a difference between the installed RAM modules now, rather than to a difference between the two operating systems. It could be, one RAM module (probably the 2 GB stick) is defect (or notappropriate for your specs, think of bus bandwith/speed), or your motherboard/BIOS does not like the 1+2 GB combination, even when it displays it right. And therefore, Windows also doesn't recognize your installed RAM the way it should (it depends from BIOS infos, here).Try the following steps: (1) Replace the 1 GB module with your 2 GB one. If it works, ok. If not or in a similar way as the 1+2 combo, module faulty. (2) If the 2 GB module works, add another 2 GB. If that works, then you can't combine 1 and 2 GB modules in your machine (or you can combine it at the cost of some loss - but I wouldn't wait until you notice the problem elsewhere than only in system infos). Means, in this case both the 1 GB and the 2 GB stick are ok, but their combination isn't.Mobile AMD64 3000+, VIA Apollo K8T800 chipset, 1 G RAM, ATIRadeonMobility 9700, 20x DVDRW, C:XPSP3 (55G),D:WIN7 (25G),F:DATA (250G)

a_r_Barath -Does your Vista machine have a dedicated video card or is it an on the motherboard video solution? If it's a dedicated video card, it won't be taking the RAM away from the main memory pool. If it's an onboard card, it's likely using part of that memory pool. That is where the 256 MB of RAM is going on your Windows 7 box - all IS good.

Wolfie!Risk a lookat the screenshots. The 2,75 GB "Total Physical Memory" may be explainable this way. That it says "Installed Physical Memory (RAM): Not available", not. How can 2,75 GB be a part of nothing?Mobile AMD64 3000+, VIA Apollo K8T800 chipset, 1 G RAM, ATIRadeonMobility 9700, 20x DVDRW, C:XPSP3 (55G),D:WIN7 (25G),F:DATA (250G)

Sanmartin - Ok. I see the problem now. On my system, when I pop up the properties box, it says "not available" for a second or so - while it's retrieving that information. It also says that while it's retriving the CPU in the line above. It could be a registry issue - if it's retrieving that info from there - or a BIOS issue (the command being sent to retrieve it isn't quite right perhaps). Or it's not able to parse the reply sent by the BIOS. Either way - MSINFO has the correct "total physical memory" value.

hi Wolfie2k6, Sanmartin,Thanks for the reply. I find 2.75 GB of ram in task manager too. I have verified the RAM MODULES. The modules are perefectly alright. The problem is somehow windows 7 does not get the value right in installed memory section. If there is a registry problem, then there is a bug with RC VERSION in displaying ram. In my BIOS it cleanly says what is the total memory in DIMM1 Slot and DIMM2 Slot.I wonder, if somehow system displays correct total physical memory available as 2.75 gb (excluding shared mem)., why it is not showing in total memory installed. I would get a SiSandra and will see whats the issue.I guess something here needs to be sorted out.. tks
