This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Hi there.

Let me start off by saying that my problem is specific to only windows 8.1 64x and deals with usb devices.

My specs:

  • Crucial MX100 ssd
  • Win 8.1 Pro 64x
  • MSI Gtx 970
  • MSI Gaming 5 z97
  • i7-4790k

I'm trying to connect my Rocksmith Realtone cable (usb audio) to a usb port on my pc and whenI right click the "Usb audio device) in device manager, this pops up under properties. There is also a yellow exclamation mark on the device.

"

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

The I/O request was canceled."

Now, like I said, this is only on win 8.1 64x. I installed win 7 64x on an older hdd and put it in my pc and the cable was recognized right away and was usable. I have tried:

  • Manually uninstalling the device, and reinstalling
  • Manually installing the device driver
  • Formatted ssd and did a fresh install of win 8.1
  • Tried it on win 7 with same pc and it worked fine
  • Updated realtek drivers
  • Updated Nvidia drivers
  • Disabled xHCI in bios
  • Disabled legacy usb support in dios
  • Disabled eHCI in bios
  • Enabled usb powered hubs in bios
  • Disabled selected powering in power options + made a new high performance profile

Here are photos of the problem

Every other usb device I have/try works. I tested all my usb 2.0 and usb 3.0 ports and they all work with my mouse, keyboard, and flash drive.

I'm not really sure where to go from here. I contacted Ubisoft (maker of the game Rocksmith) and they said it was a driver issue and I haven't received any more help. I'd really rather not need to dual boot win 7 and win 8.1 just to  use the cable.

Have you tried reading this thread

in reference to Rocksmith USB issues? Some of the possible fixes include registry changes and usin ga powered USB port. Let me know if it works for you.

I don't have a powered usb hub, but I have set the value for Enhanced power management to "0" for the device, and turned off selective power saving. I have also ready that thread many times.

Also, this only happens for Win 8.1, so I know it's an issue with the OS

Paul

Given what the cable does and what device manager looks like it is a driver issue.  Their driver.  Your best bet is to contact the developer BUT I do wonder if you have tried re-installing the driver in compatibility mode for win 7

To install in compatibility mode do the following:

Right click the installer>properties>compatibility>choose OS

(works in vista, win 7, win 8, and win 10)

As for the driver, the driver that is used for the cable is the generic usb audio driver from Microsoft. Ubisoft (the makers of the game) do not use a custom driver. This being said, I cannot reinstall the driver in compatability mode as the driver is installed via windows update.

If that is the case why is there a driver that is not installed correctly in device manager.  I suspect (but do not know) Ubisoft is trying to "emulate" a different kind of device and I suspect they are not doing it properly.  Have you tried the cable on another computer?

Is the game win 8.1 compatible?

If it worked in win 7 and does not in win 8 and it is the only thing that does not work doesnt it seem logical that they need to do something to make it work in win 8.1?

From your sysinfo32.  Google which device that is

The USB Audio device is, like I stated, the rocksmith cable. I have contacted Ubisoft but they are unable to do anything and say that "the drivers are the generic usb mic drivers from Microsoft". I know of many people who have Win 8.1 and are able to use the cable flawlessly. In fact, everyone I know who has it and win 8.1 has it working.

I just tested the cable on my Win 7 64x laptop and it worked fine

I believe you.  Obviously something in your environment is preventing it starting.  You have done extensive work on it.  I suspect the only way you are going to get it to work is to refresh the system and even then I have my doubts.  Happy to stick with this if you are inclined.

I've actually formatted my ssd thrice and did a clean install of win 8.1 pro each time. I even grabbed a spare hdd and installed win 7 pro on it, and the cable then worked. It's just with 8.1 that it doesn't

Ugh.

Lets see what we have

Cable works on other 8.1

Cable works on your win 7

Cable doesnt work on your win 8.1

No driver required but device manager shows a "!"

Perhaps something else in the USB chain is preventing it starting.  In device manager View> show hidden devices

For all the gray USB devices (gray means not currently installed) uninstall them.  Leave the black ones

Nope, still not doing it. I uninstalled the ones that weren't connected and still nothing

Ugh.  Perhaps you need to disable the other Audio devices?  You have realtek, nVidia, and the cable?  Just throwing things out as ideas.  I have no idea atm.

Sadly I've already tried that.

I think i'm just going to have to downgrade to Win 7 pro, unfortunately

Looks like that or run a win 7 Hyper-v machine.  That might tell you if it was software or hardware but I am out of ideas.  Sorry

Well I formatted my ssd and installed Win 7 64x Pro on it. Firs thing I did after updating GPU drivers was plug the cable in, and lo and behold, it worked instantly.

I think it has to do with the fact that Microsoft made the drivers for USB ports for win 8.1, as opposed to how Intel made them for win 7. But, this is just a speculation
