ThinkPoint infected computer will not allow any mode of windows to start: safe mode, normal mode, etc. A black screen is all I get.
I have two computers. The infected one with Windowx XP Home Edition. Suddenly (yesterday October 18, 2010) the ThinkPoint pop-up appeared. On my clean computer I looked for solutions and was able to stop the service through task manager. Then, downloaded MalwareBytes. It scanned and detected 5 items. It then opened a window with text stating that 1 item could not be removed and needed to re-start the computer. So I followed the instruction on the MalwareBytes window. But after restart, a black screen. Turned it off and on again and a black screen. F8 works but after I chooseany mode (safe mode, previous configuration, etc) a black screen again. I have searched for solutions and all of them presume safe mode or any mode different than normal windows works. My problem is that no boot option (even normal Windows) seems to work. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Hi, I'd suggest you do a repair installation. Please follow the steps mentioned in the below article Perform a Repair Installationhttp://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx Note: Repair Install will however not remove the infection. Hello Azeez,I tried the FIXMBR through the Recovery Console and allowed booting. It then continued the process of Repair Installation. After a windows validation I was able to log on. I am now on safemode scanning with Malwarebytes. I am afraid it will not complete resolve but I will keep downloading scanners and scanning until the computer starts acting normally. Unless you have any other suggestions.Thank you for your time.

If MBAM completes, then get ComboFix and CCleaner from http://www.majorgeeks.com.CCleaner will repair registry junk and Combofix will fix them. Scan with the latest edition of your antivirus and you should get back to Normal mode.

You will most likely need to reinstall the operating system on your computer and basically do a reload. Sounds like you have a virus which can only be wiped off your computer by doing a reload/restore. You will need to use your recovery disk/boot disk, and if you can, backup all your data because you will lose everything._____ has recovery boot disks if you do not have your own. Microsoft is terrible at replacing lost boot disks, and this website has an easy solution to this problem. Good luck!
