The case of the missing System Restore Points: Windows 7 64-bit 7100
Windows 7 RC1 7100 build with latest fixes.Am facing a problem / bug / issue with System Restore.I allocated 12% of my primary drive for system restore and 10% of my secondary drive for system restore.System Restore points created automatically or manually get deleted without notice or knowledge.Whenever a system restore point is created automatically, i can see it for that time and probably another 30 mins. After a reboot, the system restore point is gone: meaning when i launch SYs Restore it says no points found.Whenever i manually create a system restore point, the same thing happens. It disappears after reboot. What is going on?Before installing nVidia 186.18 driver i had manually created one and made sure it exists. After installing the driver, my display got messed up with a WerFault every time i open windows (2 times). So went into safe mode and wanted to system restore. NOPE. The point was missing! Incredible was ALL points were missing. After spending 2 days reinstalling Windows 7 with ALL apps anhd Games, i find that the same issue exists.Whenever i create or OS created a restore point, it disappears after a while randomly.I run kaspersky and i don't think it is responsible since this problem appeared before i installed kaspersky. What exactly is the issue?Live free or die - Motto of NH state, USA

Anand - It sounds like you've got something installed that's wiping your restore points out. What that is, I have no idea. But let's see if we can sort this out.First off, you mentioned it took you 2 days to get everything installed. Did you happen to notice if this vanishing restore point issue was happening right from the start? If you right-click on the computer icon on the start menu and select Properties, and then click on System Protection on the left sidebar, and select the drive Windows 7 is installed on, and finally click on the Configure button, you should see the settings for System Restore. In the middle section where you select the maximum usage for this feature, it should tell you what the current usage is. On my system, it was set to 3.7 GB - and the current usage is 3.0 GB. How much space does your system report being used?

Hi Wolfie2k6First of all thank you for responding to my query. To answer your questions:1) Allocated Space: 25.1 GB.2) Used Space: 85.1 MBI created one today JUST 3 hours ago. A power outage caused an abnormal shutdown. When i rebooted, the point was gone. All i had was a Backup Restore Point created automatically.I created one now. When i reboot, it will be gone.I use kaspersky 2009.eBooStr for Windows 7.Just when i need the restore point it disappears.I bought a Transcend USB drive, created a System Image and a Repair Disc and have kept them separate. When this install goes down, i can atleast save some time with a system image restore.Live free or die - Motto of NH state, USA

That's a program that gives Windows XP a feature similar to Ready Boost which is already included in Windows 7.

Hi Wolfie2k6 Yes, am running eBooStr on Windows 7. The latest 3.0 version that is compatible with Windows 7 and 64-bit. Live free or die - Motto of NH state, USA

Anand - Hmm.. OK.. Does it help much? The reviews I read didn't seem to indicate a lot unless you were using a system with like 512 MB of RAM. But I'm getting sidetracked.. Now then.. How comforatable would you be to removing Kaspersky AV and replacing it with a freebie - like Avast - on a trial basis, of course.. Swap AV programs, save a restore point, reboot, check to see if it's there..That kind of thing.

Hi Wolfie2k6,Thank you for your response. But the kaspersky AV is not the problem. As i said earlier, i had this case of disappearing system restore points before i installed Kaspersky. After the fiasco with nvidia 186.18 and its werfault.exe issues, i understood that system restore points disappear. So after i had done a clean install of Windows 7 i created a Manual System Restore point, confirmed it, rebooted and looked for the point: it was gone. And i had allotted 12.2 GB of my primary disk space (C:) and 18.4 GB of my secondary drive (D:) for system restore BEFORE i rebooted. This point was created before i installed anything else, before kaspersky, before eBooStr, before everything else.I was a bit surprised. I tried the same approach 3 times more to confirm my suspicions: Windows 7 RC build 7100 does make manual system restore points disappear when you shutdown and reboot properly. What surprised me was I have 4GB of RAM and AMD X2 64-bit processor, so i don't think RAM is the issue. Anand - AH.. I see.. Must have misunderstood that bit.. Hmm.. that IS a puzzler.

Hi Wolfie2k6,It is a big puzzle to me.I booted up my system now and sure enough all the manual and system created restore points are missing. What is available is one Backup restore point created yesterday.I have checked almost every item in the Event Viewer. Nothing remotely suspicious is reported.Live free or die - Motto of NH state, USA

Found out afer investigation.volsnap event viewer says that the Shadow Copy had to be deleted because of IO. So the disk state changes while it is being shadowed. The IO is too heavy for shadow copy to work.Live free or die - Motto of NH state, USA
