The backup was not successful. The error is: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. (0x80070020).
1. You have not mentioned clean boot and safe boot. These regimes would help to eliminate some potencially conflicting services. 2. Process Monitor and Process Explorer from Sysinternals would help to find the conflicting process. Though a bit redious, these tools will help you to pinpoint the critical spot(s). 3. This error is described in MS KB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883825/cs Regards Milos Yes, I did mention the safe boot. You didn't read carefully. You didn't explain how the Process monitor and Explorer would help. You were wrong, the error described in MS KB 883825 is referred to Windows Update not Windows Backup. Regards

Hi all, I've just deployed a new machine, my personal desktop and, after installing all the sw and completing the configuration I'm getting that message when I tried to backup. Machine: Intel i7 with Win7E 64b SP1. I'm backing up to an internal SATA HDD. When backing up to the HDD device, the following error occurs: Running backup of volume System Disk(C:), copied (99%). Backup of volume System Disk(C:) completed successfully. Backup stopped before completing. Summary of backup: Summary of backup: ------------------ Backup stopped before completing. The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. -- I tried the followings: - complete check of the boot partition (C:) with chkdsk c: /f/r and everything is ok. - sfc /scannow and everything is ok. - I reformatted the backup HDD (not quick but full format), and then chkdsk it, and everything is ok with it. - I disabled the AV prog (AVAST free v. 6.0.1367) shutting down its service but the backup didn't work either. - I tried to make the backup with Win7 in safe mode but I got a message "backup not supported in this mode". I'm really short of clues here and the machine has never been backupped so far! :-( I can provide the .etl files if needed. Any hints!?

Hi, According the issue, I suggest you backup your system in Clean Boot: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 Note: Clean Boot is a step of troubleshooting, we can go back to normal by running MSCONIFG. If the issue persists, please upload these .etl files via SkyDrive and post a link here. http://explore.live.com/windows-live-skydrive?wa=wsignin1.0William Tan TechNet Community Support

Check the "Volume Shadow Copy" service make sure is running. Check the even viewer for any failures of this service.

Yes, the "Volume Shadow Copy" service is running, but the backup still aborts. I also tried to change the AV program, but nothing changed. Any hints?
