The Microsoft Antimalware Service is locked on the Automatic startup type
Hi
I have Windows
7 SP1 64-bit and I upgraded it with
the Windows Update service.
Now, I have noticed that, from the Services window,
the Microsoft Antimalware Service
is locked on the Automatic startup type
and I can neither set it on other startup type
nor stop it. How come?
Thanks

1. Try to do it with elevated administrator rights (Run as Administrator).
2. Look into event logs and in windowsupdate.log

Hi,
Go to services.msc then make this service as automatic.
This will resolve your issue.

Same issue here. Ever since windows update KB2754296 (MSE Client Update Sept 25/2012) my Microsoft Antimalware Service is now locked and they startup type (Automatic) is greyed out and unchangeable. The same is true of the START, STOP, PAUSE, RESUME, RESET
options, all greyed out.
Ran services.msc with admin rights, same issue since this update, locked services on AUTOMATIC and START. It cannot be turned off.

Hi,
The services "Microsoft Antimalware Service" could not be changed. Based on my understanding, this might be based on security considerations.
Thanks.

MAS can be stopped within previous versions of MSE. Build v4.1.0522 disallows users to turn off that service for good reason.
Not all localized versions of MSE 4.1.0522 (standalone installer) are available for download. For example MS Download Center (Greece) lists v4.1.0522 as the current version, however users are redirected to an outdated download (v4.0.1526).
