The Audio Service is not running
I had recently updated Microsoft Windows and after the restart, I found that the audio notification icon had the "error" or "no audio" icon. I hovered over it and it said "The Audio Service is not running." I had recently scanned my computer using AVG and it had quarantined C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SPOOL\DRIVERS\X64\3\OLD\1\PRINTCONFIG.DLL. Is this the problem or is there another? I had also tried to start the Audio Service through the Services window and it came up with an error that said something like "Cannot start: Endpoint is a duplicate."

I got exactly the same problem, only AVG quarantined the PrintConfig.dll BEFORE the update, and after the update the audio notification icon had the "error" and when hovered over it displayed exactly the same message "The Audio Service is not running."

for both of you, I suggest do system restore, uninstall AVG (using AVG uninstall tools) and update your Windows to see if there is any difference

Hi,

Regarding to current information, this issue can be caused by corrupted updated files or drivers.

Since security application like AVG will sometimes block some good installation of Windows update, please first perform system restore as what britishdhez mentioned and remove AVG to get update installed again.

If the issue still persists, please check if there is any update related to audio driver. Can this issue be fixed if you remove such update?

I also suggest you can try to reinstall Audio driver to check the results.

I had that problem, fortunately found the solution, just recover the system some day ago, using recovery (Action Center -> Recovery ->  Open System Restore ) windows 8.1. Apparently AVG 2014 updated some files causing a conflict with the OS.
