Temporary Profile issue in Windows 7.
Hi Everyone, We have a lot of users in our organization who are experiencing this temporary profile issue. Have not been able to identify the root cause for this issue. The similarities which we have found out so far for the users who are experiencing this temporary profile issue is. 1) Users are part of the domain. 2) Users are running windows 7 operating system. Have come across this issue in all windows 7 version but predominantly in windows 7 professional & enterprise. At times the temporary profile is created in the following format user.MAV,user.MAV.000,user.MAV.001 & At times it creates a profile name called temp. Can somebody help us find a solution & root cause for this issue?

Are these roaming profiles? If so check the share that the profiles are stored in and ensure that it is set to not allow caching of files in this folder. If this is already the case then I wonder if it will be possible to disable this for a few users to see if the issue disappears?Alan Moseley

Something is corrupting the profile at logoff/shutdown. When the problem occurs is it after switching on from cold, resuming from standby, logging in when the machine has been stood idle for a while? Do they have redirected folders?Alan Moseley

Here are some things that I would try. Login as a known administrator to the workstation. Windows will only create a temporary profile on the workstation if in the registry the path specificied for the user account in question is NOT READABLE by said user when they log in. We've had this happen a couple of times, not sure why. All profiles are listed in the registry under HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList They are each listed as separate keys UNDER profileList, and each KEY is a SID reference to the user that the profile belongs to. Locate the SID for the user in question and then look at the ProfileImagePath string value. This is the root profile directory of the user that Windows will try to allow the user to access when they login. Locate this folder, usually found in C:\Users\%USERNAME% Right click on the Folder, select Security, click on ADVANCED, click on the OWNER tab. If the user does not appear in the CURRENT OWNER field, and some other ID does appear, then you will have issues. In some cases you will see SYSTEM as the current owner. This should still allow the user with their current rights level to login to their own profile directory. In the cases where I've solved this problem I have replaced the owner with the user that should be there, and propgated the changes to all folders beneath it. Hope this helps. john John Wildes | Senior Enterprise Architect | United Airlines | Desktop Engineering

Are you deleting profiles on logout? That could be problemmatic, especially if you installed chrome.

Hi Alan, They don't have redirected folders. It definitely happens when the user logs off & logs in. when the user logs in after resuming from standby . not sure when the user logs in after being idle for a while.

Hi John, Thanks for all the inputs. Have not tried what you have said "Replacing the owner permissions". You had this issue while you were using Windows XP. We did not experience this issue until Windows 7 was deployed in our organization. How many systems in your organization has come across this issue? Any workgroup machines.

Hi JS, At times we delete the profiles. What is the issue if you have installed chrome?

Hi Vikram, Refer to this KB: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947215. It seems the user profile got corrupted. However, no record shows it's caused by installing Chrome, I've seen the same situation but the user never installed Chrome.
