Just recently i was called by someone claiming to be from microsoft. They said that my computer had "thousnds and thousands of viruses" and that they needed me to disble my firewall so they could help me fix them. I turned the phone off and started a virus scan. 5 viruses, all of which MalwareBytes removed. Then i moved to hitman pro, it found one additional trojan horse, removed it and proclaimed my pc virus clean. Yeah I hadn't scanned in a while and my firewall was outdated. I fixed that easily enough. My question is this, was the guy really from microsoft. It seems rather out of charicter to call up a user and talk them through a problem if they hadn't called you up before hand. Thanks.

MS NEVER cold-call - and they would have no idea about your computer unless you told them. It was a scam - if you gave them any credit-card or other information, stop the cards and change the PINs or passwords on all accounts. If you gave them access to your computer - scan it with a decent anti-malware app, and an up-to-date Anti-Virus. -- Noel Paton | Nil Carborundum Illegitemi | CrashFixPC | The Three-toed Sloth

This a complete scam, and one that's become very common lately. Do not believe anything such a caller says, do nothing he tells you to do, and hang up on him immediately. Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP
