Taskbar order limitation
I love the fact that I can re-order applications on the taskbar in Windows 7, but there is one strange bit of design that limits its usefulness for me quite severely: one cannot re-order multiple instances of one application. With Windows XP, I used a free utility called TBarSort that allowed me to drag and drop taskbar items into any order in a separate window, then apply the change to re-order them. That application does not work with Windows 7 and, while Windows 7 allows rudimentary re-ordering of applications, and I even find the move-as-a-group somewhat useful, it does not allow re-ordering within the application group. This is critical for me because I often have RDP connections to many computers open concurrently as I run updates or software installations, rebooting each computer remotely as one update is complete and reconnecting to do the next update/installation. About the only way to keep track of which computer is which is to arrange them alphabetically; however, as I remotely reboot various ones at various times and reconnect, they get out of order--with no way to get them back in order other than to close all 20 connections and reconnect in order.

Unfortunately Windows 7 is not smart enough for that. The reason is that applications today use mutidocument interfaces so its not needed. I find it very interesting that although Windows 7 is not smart enough to do this, I used the free third-party application, tbarsort.exe, to sort multiple instances of the RDP client under Windows XP Pro. I would challenge the assumption that it is not needed, because I need it. It would be more accurate to say that the OS developers at Microsoft did not anticipate the need for it.
