Task Scheduler Startup Error
Greetings,When I try to start Task Scheduler, I get an error message:The selected task "{0}" no longer exists. To see the current tasks, click Refresh. When I click OK, I get another error:Task Scheduler is not available. Task Scheduler will attempt to reconnect to it.When I click OK to this error, I get the first error message again. When I click OK to that error message, Task Scheduler starts, but the Task Status says "Reading Data Failed."What would cause these errors? Thanks,Shane.Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit; Internet Explorer 8.0.7600.16385

I would recommend to use the System File Checker utility to check for altered system files. MCSA/MCTS/MCP

I ran System File Checker, and it finished saying "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations." Is there anything else I could try? Thanks,Shane.Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit; Internet Explorer 8.0.7600.16385

You can try the steps described in troubleshooting taskscheduler . Check your eventlogs to check whether they give a clou of what the issue is. check your registry for the key HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Schedule start should have a value of "2" to enable automatic start. You shoudl also try to review the currently scheduled tasks using the commandline utility Schtasks.exe MCSA/MCTS/MCP

Tasks are stored in C:\Windows\System32\Tasks In Registry, related branches are located in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache\Tasks Tasks tree is stored in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache\Tree\Microsoft If any tasks are broken, such issues will occur. You may find a fine system, and check above folder and Registry branches to find which one is lost. A simpler way is doing In-place Upgrade to repair the system. Your personal data and programs will not be removed after repair. However I still suggest that you backup important data before repair.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Since Task Scheduler won't start, I can't perform the steps in the article. This registry entry is set to 2. I've reviewed the currently scheduled tasks in the command line utility, but I don't see anything out of the ordinary. Shane.Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit; Internet Explorer 8.0.7600.16385

The alternate thread said to compare the Task Schedular with the c:\Windows\System32\Tasks\ folder, and to delete any mismatched items. I started deleting Tasks in Windows Explorer, but eventually the Task Schedular wouldn't start at all. I'm going to try to do a repair from my Windows 7 CD, but I'm on holidays right now, so I'll have to wait until I get home. Shane.Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit; Internet Explorer 8.0.7600.16385

This helped me solve my Task Scheduler error which was related to MediaCenter Updates. The error was "The selected task "{named task}" no longer exists. To see the current tasks, click Refresh." I was able to compare the Task Scheduler task list with the c:\Windows\System32\Tasks\ folder, and delete the item in the folder which was not included in the task list in the Scheduler. Make sure you look in the correct folder. There is another Tasks folder which is incorrect. Thanks.

Where was the extra item? Was it in Tasks Schedular, or in c:\Windows\System32\Tasks\? Thanks, Shane.Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit

The only thing I found that didn't match was this: C:\Windows\System32\Tasks\HPCeeScheduleForShane I've deleted it, but I still have the Task Schedular error. Shane.Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit
