Taking 3-5 min. before shut down menu appears.
In the last few weeks, it is taking 3 to 5 minutes after I go into the "start" menu and click, "Turn off computer" before the 3 option menu appears: Log Off, Shut Down, or Restart. It used to come up within a second or two. Once the menu comes up, it does shut down appropriately. I have the Windows XP Media Home Edition 2002 version. Any suggestions?1 person needs an answerI do too

Hello,1. Did you make any changes to the computer before having this issue? The shutdown process may take too long if there is a delay in ending the processes running in the background, I suggest that you set your computer to clean boot and check if you have the same issue in shutting down the computer. You can refer the below article that will give you information on ‘How to set the computer to clean boot’:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353I also suggest that you have a look at the below article that talks about ‘How To Increase Shutdown Time So That Processes Can Quit Properly in Windows XP’: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/305788Go to the registry and check if the default time-out value is set to 20 milliseconds. Don’t increase the time value or decrease it.Thanks,Irfan H, Microsoft Answers Support Engineer. Visit ourMicrosoft Answers Feedback Forum and let us know what you think.

First you should make sure your system is not afflicted with malicious software, then start troubleshooting. It does not make sense to start troubleshooting a system that might be afflicted with malicious software.Perform some scans for malicious software, then fix any remaining issues:Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware detection programs:Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://malwarebytes.org/SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/They can be uninstalled later if desired. When the scans run clean (if you still have problems), provide information about your system, then figure out what is wrong and fix it with certainty:Please provide additional information about your system:What is your system make and model? What is your XP Version and Service Pack?Describe your current antivirus and anti malware situation: McAfee, Symantec, Norton, Spybot, AVG, Avira!, MSE, Defender, ZoneAlarm, PC Tools, Comodo, etc.Does the afflicted system have a working CD/DVD drive?Do you have a genuine bootable XP installation CD (this is not the same as any Recovery CDs that came with your system)?Click Start, Run and in the box enter:msinfo32Click OK, and when the System Summary info appears, click Edit, Select All, Copy and then paste the information back here. There will be some personal information (like System Name and User Name), and whatever appears to be private information to you, just delete it from the pasted information. This will minimize back and forth Q&A and eliminate guesswork. Do, or do not. There is no try.I need YOUR votes and points for helpful replies and Propose as Answers. I am saving up for a pony!
