TMG on Server 2012

Greetings,

I've seen a couple of other people asking about Server 2012 support, and there doesn't seem to have been any clear answers.

    • Given TMG is "no longer for sale" from December 1st 2012 (only 2 months!), will it be updated to run on Server 2012 at all?
    • Given that TMG is supported until 2015, and in extended support until 2020, it seems to follow the same lifecycle periods as Server 2008R2. Does that mean we will need to keep 2008R2 licenses to be able to continue to run TMG?

Regards,

Scott.

Hi,

regarding TMG on Windows Server 2012:

regarding the license question:
AFAIK yes, you must keep a Windows Server 2008 R2 license for TMG until extended support ends

Thanks Marc,

I had seen that post, as well as several others, but it's quite old and before Server 2012 was RTM's or before the TMG retirement had been announced. It would be really good to have an "official" position on this. There are many admins out there who will continue to use TMG in the meantime and would like a clearer understanding of what to expect.

Considering the following TMG has, the announcement that "it will no longer be for sale from December 1st" was a pretty short time frame, and I haven't become aware of any further follow up or clarification. It seems like MS have said that and walked away from it already! It's still an Enterprise product, so given Server 2012 was released *before* TMG was retired, some clarity from MS would be appreciated.

Maybe time to move to Direct Access if possible.

Hi Duncan,

No, I already know the dates for the death of TMG, but my question is regarding its support on Server2012 which the lifecycle table doesn't refer to at all.

As for direct access, that doesn't actually have anything to do with what TMG is primarily used for. DA is just an access technology, it doesn't offer any sort of protection or stateful inspection, it doesn't allow you to publish internal resources to "untrusted" computers.

UAG doesn't replace TMG, and "the cloud" isn't a viable alternative to everything either. In short, by dropping TMG, MS are leaving a big gap that we now need to find other vendor products.

Hi,

Thank you for the post.

As far as I know, this is the latest roadmap for Forefront: http://blogs.technet.com/b/server-cloud/archive/2012/09/12/important-changes-to-forefront-product-roadmaps.aspx.

Hi Nick,

The roadmap for TMG says it will be supported until 2015/2020, but it says nothing about in what capacity. My current licensing (MAPS) requires me to upgrade my server to 2012 and that just isn't possible at the moment.

I realise it isn't *currently* supported or working on 2012, but is it possible for someone to let us know if there are even any plans for it to be supported at anytime before it's EOL?

Hi,

Thank you for the update.

As for license issue, youd better to contact your Sales Rep. Your Sales Rep should be able to answer your licensing questions.

You say that as if the sales reps have any better idea. As I work for a Solutions Integrator, I know that  "sales reps" don't know anything more about this, whether they work for Microsoft directly or a LAR.

You are right Scott!.

I recently read this post , almost one and half years later and in this moment my conclusion its always almost the same these guys are just trying to get points but they didn't answer the original questions. I have reviewed the technical library about the TMG a it doesn't mention something about support on Windows 2012.

I am sure that you resolved this case but that is the official until now.

Greetings!!!.

No, nothing has changed or been resolved. As far as I know there is still no change or updates on Microsoft position regarding TMGA  and 2012 support. Given that my license bundle still includes TMG Ive just left it running on a 2008 server. If Microsoft decide to take me to task for not updating it to 2012 then I'll discuss that with them then.
