System name vs. IP Address in Shares
I've seen this problem before and never understood why this happens. When trying to share drives and printers on my home network, I have a problem mapping using system names. The workgroup name on both my systems is the same, but when I go into browse the network on each system, I can't see the other system. If I try to map by typing out the share name and logging in with a different user name (a valid one for the target system obviously) it won't work if I type in the system name, e.g. \\Desktop\Printer1 but it will work if I use the IP address - \\192.168.1.100\Printer1 The problem is I then have to use fixed IP addresses to avoid things from getting messed up. Usually, once you get one resource mapped and the two systems have seen each other once the system name can be used. However, I just got a new system with Vista Home Premium and can only us IP addresses so far. Insights appreciated. TIA.

I have exactly the same problem. WinXP, Win2K, & Win2k3 machines all see each other fine, Vista can't see anything unless you use the IP address. Has anybody found a solution to this problem?
