System hang during 'power- down update' cycle
Having received a notification of a system update this morning, I selected shutdown so that the updates could install. It's been several hours, and the screen is still stuck saying don't power off the computer until the updates are done. I'm checking it online with LogMeIn, and tried ctrl-alt-del to no avail. So when I get home, I will have to press the reset button and hope nothing bad has happened. Any other advice or others that are seeing this behavior? W7 Pro thanks!

Hi,I heard some people encounter the same issue during the installation of updates, there were many updates actually in their situation, it is a matter of waiting. Some even wailt 20 hours and all set. However, if it is too bothering to wait, go ahead to perform a cold start. If anything happens, system restore can be of help.

I have seen a few do this. Normally the updates will resume upon startup, but this can cause the machine to not boot as well. If they do not install properly, delete the windows updates, completely re-download and install them. *If* it doesn't boot, you can always try a startup repair outlined here (or of course a repair on Win 7 itself): http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/681-startup-repair.html

Thanks for the replies ;-)I did a hard reset, and the computer booted to allow me to choose boot normally or in safe mode. I chose normal and it came up fine. However, there was an update waiting for Silverlight, which I installed. It was not a shutdown update, and just installed. I checked the update log, and the most recent entry before the Silverlight [KB979202] update was a week ago on the 13th, a Security Update [KB972270]. I wonder if I hadn't power-cycled since then, and had only put it in Sleep? I would be a little surprised, but it's possible.Anywho, that's the story. Thanks again, appreciate the replies.

I had the same experience last night - closed down machine about 11pm when it started to download 5 updates - when I checked it this morning at 8am it was only on download 2 of 5! I used the hard reset on the assumption it had locked up and now I'm hoping it will respond ok when I get back tonight.

OH PLEASE, tell me did it work? My system is hung RIGHT NOW, I hesitate to take the risk of not being able to restart if I do a reboot while it says "do not power offf...."

Looks like you are safe to reboot, from the experiences listed here...

I had the same problem... stuck "installing update 15 of 29" on a new laptop running Windows 7. About 20 hours later it finished. 2 of the 29 updates failed. I retried them and they installed. Everything seems to be running well now.
